Mouse and Keyboard suddenly stopped working

I was just in a game in a 6 stack. We won game one, and were winning the rematch game 2. Suddenly something weird happened. Me and half of our team all at the same time suddenly had both our mouse and keyboards completely stop working.

We could talk on voice coms just fine, but any attempts to move or use any hotkeys or even chat type anything including escape or alt+f4 or ctrl+alt+del failed to get any response and our mouse also went unresponsive at exact same time.

At first I assumed someone on enemy team was trying to hack us or something because of playing too good. But doing a search showed that Overwatch has had these issues in the past. Only back then people were blaming it on a Discord overlay.

Thing is… I wasn’t even running discord so it can’t be that!

Anyone else today or recently run into the unresponsive input controls glitch?

If this happens repeatedly you should check for any Overlay programs like Discord, or background processes that can interfere with Overwatch:

Thank you, I really do appreciate hat we have someone willing to help out. But I do still have an issue with that advice.

The problem is that I had no overlays on at all. The only programs I had active at the time was OW, the Battle(dot)net client, Libre Office’s Calc program minimized in the background (I was working on something and took a break to play some OW), and the core Windows files. That’s it, nothing else and certainly no overlays.

I wasn’t even running any autorun programs in the background. Ages ago I removed the msconfig files in both auto run and services that were not core to Windows. Beyond that, I also removed all Windows core files that I did not actually need. I also routinely check for malware and other unwanted addons and my pc was clean last check a few hours prior to the incident, and still clean just a few minutes ago.

Beyond that, it is bizarre that myself and 3 teammates all simultaneously got the same keyboard and mouse shutdown glitch at the same time if the fault was on my side / client side rather than on OW’s side.

So this bug, if it was not a hack job by an enemy player, was purely the fault of OW itself or the Battle(dot)net program solely. And I personally had no Overlays at all. Which is why my OP stated that it was being blamed on Discord overlay but that it still happens without that.

Do you or your friends happen to use drawing tablets? Sometimes these can interfere with inputs in Overwatch. Otherwise, as with any software error, please post a dxdiag so MVPs and staff can look for software conflicts.

On this pc I have no externals other than the mouse, keyboard, and headset. But I’ll ask the others if any of them did. As for a DxDiag… I don’t think this log shows any problems, but I’ll include it just to make it easier to debug for y’all…

EDIT: PS if there ā€˜is’ a problem on my end please let me know so I can fix it if possible.

Were there any errors at the bottom of the report? There’s usually at least one.

That was the entire DxDiag log. The only change I made was to put (Censored) on the Computer Name since that can actually help hackers get into a machine’s security combined with IP addresses.

Now, errors occur semi frequently on my computer if the Event Viewer is to be believed. During the last 7 days the Event Viewer tells me that my system has had 3 errors, 3 warnings, 512 information, and 31 audit success. However, none of them are important to this incident. The only Overwatch or Battle(dot)net incidents showing in my event viewer log was on February 12th when the Battle(dot)net client hanged.

Unless I am missing something the event viewer is also useless for diagnosing this. There is no record of any problems specifically for the game client. Instead all it shows is dozens of shutdowns and restarts for both the keyboard and the mouse drivers over and over within a few seconds time, followed by me shutting down the pc into sleep mode by pressing the pc’s power button. The very first sign of something being wrong was an event 20003 UserPnp

"Driver Management has concluded the process to add Service usbccgp for Device Instance ID USB\V1D_1C4F&PID_0002\6&3B8ACE4D&2&2 with the following status: 0.

After that event there are a grand total of 27 attempts by the computer to install both the mouse and keyboard drivers. Then one minute later the system registered me shutting off the power to restart the machine.

If I was the only person this was happening to I would have just written it off as a weird glitch in my system. But the fact that this happened at exactly the same time to me and 3 other players on my team (and possibly to some on other team) makes me suspicious of the origins.

AFAIK the game client itself has no control over your inputs, other than assigning binds. If you see tons of driver crash/reinstalls, that leads me to believe something is either wrong with your USB ports, how they communicate with your board, or another program trying to take them over in the background. I’ve been on the forums for a bit, and the only other time I’ve come across this the cause was malware.

Checked for that. System is clean.

Besides which, this issue occurred simultaneously for at minimum 4 different players. I find it really hard to believe that all 4 of us at the exact same time just somehow had unrelated malware hit us. And, no, we do not share files / emails which could put the same malware on everyone’s computers.

If something happens to just one person then it is usually client side. But when four people get the exact same symptoms while playing the same game at the same time then usually it is server side or a glitch in the programming of the client.

Either that or all of us got attacked by a hacker who was in that game and angry that we are winning. And if this is the case then it is only possible because the game client is that insecure…

Since I don’t have any other ideas on this topic, if you’re still looking to investigate, I’d recommend opening a ticket and communicating with the staff.

I want to thank you Nicole and WyomingMyst for attempting to help me with this. I do deeply appreciate it even if we could not find a solution.

I will definitely be opening a ticket as suggested since this has now happened a second time, this time when I was solo queued and with absolutely nothing else open on my computer at the time.

Did you happen to take a look in the Windows Event Viewer under Windows system logs and see if any critical errors are popping up? I think, not 100% sure on this – possibly that other error you mentioned is when a USB device stops responding/has a bad connection and gets reinstalled by Windows. Do you have a gaming mouse and keyboard? Only asking because your diagnostic report just shows generic Windows drivers for them.

My mouse is a Logitech wired USB mouse I bought back in 2017, my keyboard is a $15 silicone usb wired keyboard I bought on Amazon back in 2018 for quieter key taps when gaming.

I’ve tried updating drivers for both but it always tells me I have the latest drivers. I also have other keyboards and mice available to swap with those if they are the source of the problem. But I have not had problems with them before in other games, and only brief issues in the past 16 months on Overwatch.

EDIT (2019-03-13): Hello again. I have an update on this issue.

Thanks to the log files you requested, the Support Ticket gurus have helped me to narrow down exactly what was causing the conflict. That’s the good news.

The bad news is that the problem is that I have Logitech products that use by default a code called Logitech Unifying Software. This code acts as a device overlay to maintain the functionality of the input devices.

The reason this is bad news is that apparrently this LUS overlay is falling foul of the same overlay glitch that Discord, Steam, etc. runs into with the Overwatch client. Even worse, unlike those overlays, the Logitech one is required for the functioning of the devices. Meaning I can’t disable it.

But at least now we know how and why Overwatch is causing input devices to stop working.

So now I am left either having to stop using Logitech devices, stop playing Overwatch, or just accept that my experience will continue to randomly glitch out mid-match.

Have you had an opportunity to switch out the mouse and keyboard to see if that solves the issue? If that’s not an option right now, I had some other (verbose) thoughts below. I don’t doubt that those answering the tickets narrowed this down, but I’m just wanting to further my knowledge on the situation if you’ll indulge me.

Logitech drivers missing or broken?

If you’re using at least one Logitech device (guessing the mouse), there are no proprietary drivers showing up in your DxDiag, which leads me to believe the correct drivers aren’t installed/working. Normally a mouse would be identified as Logitech [model name] under ā€œDirectInput Devices.ā€ This might explain why Windows keeps reinstalling the device, which could also explain the hiccups in usability.

Windows rarely installs the proprietary drivers, and instead uses a generic PnP (Plug n Play) driver. It allows the hardware to work, but sometimes not in the most optimal way. It also means means updates won’t show up, because it will already be using the latest PnP driver. In this case, I’d look to the Logitech website for the correct drivers, and see if that resolves this.

How is the keyboard related?

What’s most puzzling to me is that the keyboard stops working at the same time, even though it is not a Logitech device, correct? So the driver or overlay shouldn’t have any effect? I’m wondering if something is interfering with your IRQs (interrupt request lines) that your PC uses for processing input. That something would be lack of power to the ports, the connection for the ports to the motherboard malfunctioning, improper IRQ mapping where multiple devices compete for the same line of communication, or again… malware.

Finally, are both of these devices connected to USB 2.0? Sometimes 3.0 ports can cause things to go awry for devices made for 2.0/earlier.

Correct in every part.

The particular Logitech mouse I am using came in a ā€œplug-n-playā€ ready mode without any drivers of its own. I had at the time looked for drivers without finding any, and checked again during this investigation, and it still has no downloadable drivers.

The driver it is using is ā€œHID-compliant Optical Mouseā€. Which unfortunately has not had an update by Windows - I checked.

As for the keyboard that one puzzled me too. The keyboard was a non-Logitech silicone one I bought off of Amazon. I honestly did not even know what brand it was until I rechecked my purchase logs. After a lot of investigation though I found out that the brand is owned by the same company that produces the Logitech series.

As for why both the keyboard and the mouse could simultaneously go out, I had the same concerns and investigated it thoroughly. My results showed that both share the same Generic USB Hub, and in turn the same USB Root Hub, and in turn the same Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller. So obviously when both go out it means one of those higher tiers were effected. I’ve set up individual monitoring logs for each tier so that the next time both go bad at same time I will see exactly which tier is the ultimate problem… although tbh I am unsure how to fix it once I diagnose that. But at least I will know I suppose.

I was aware of that issue with the 3.0 ports. Which is why I had avoided that particular pit, but thank you for mentioning it as never know when I might have overlooked something.

Thank you very much for all of your time on this issue. I know support can sometimes be a thank less job with customers always angry and rarely kind. So please take away from this that at least one person was deeply grateful for your time and efforts.

I see, so it’s not specifically a gaming mouse, so there’s no need for specific drivers.

Whoa, what a coincidence.

You are far more patient than me, because I would have switched peripherals the second time it happened.

Well, I’m a volunteer and fellow player, but the thanks is appreciated nonetheless!

Thank you for this; I just installed discord and it started happening for me too. Maddening!

For Discord, try disabling the ā€œin-game overlay featureā€

  1. Open Discord
  2. Click User Settings (the gear :gear: icon in the lower left corner of the Discord interface window)
  3. Look for App Settings in the setting navigation bar and click it.
  4. Toggle ā€œEnable In-Game Overlayā€ to off.
  5. Reboot your computer and then attempt to run Overwatch again.
