Hello everyone. What do you know about monitor response times? I’m upgrading my display this week and have a choice of either a 144hz IPS with 4ms or a 144hz TN with 1ms.
Will the additional 3ms on the IPS be noticeable in a fast game like Overwatch?
Right now I’m gaming on a 60hz 2ms display so whatever I get will still be a massive upgrade.
The numbers they tell you on the box are basically useless. The response times of a pixel is actually variable based on the start and end colors that it changes to, and can vary quite a bit. This number also doesn’t account for signal processing time. The two numbers combined will give you the total latency for the display.
Assuming the average difference is 3ms, it’s unlikely that you’ll notice that specifically, but do keep in mind that little bits of latency across the whole end to end do add up (e.g. mouse poll rate + input processing time + frame rendering + display queue + scanout + display latency, etc).
EDIT: Also worth noting that with low response times sometimes comes overshoot which causes color inaccuracies. It can lead to a “ghosting” effect, though generally this is only a problem if you buy a bad panel or switch the mode to some kind of faster response time in the OSD for the monitor.
BTW http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/ is a great site for a lot of popular displays which measures a lot of these things for you. If they have reviews for both displays it can give you a better idea of the real difference between them.

I don’t believe in any spectrum of reality that you could tell a difference.
You could be a sentient gas cloud born in a nebula with the conciousness of a million universes, and I don’t believe you could tell a difference.
A 3ms difference in response time will often be visible (at least technically) on a 144Hz monitor, assuming your frame rate is consistently that high. However, you’ll also get used to it very easily, to the point that you shouldn’t feel like anything is “wrong.”
I personally stick to 1ms GTG or better, but I’m not terribly worried about affording it. I don’t think a 3ms difference is worth a major price jump if you’re on a budget at all.
Get the 1 Ms. You’ll notice a difference if you drop to 4 ms
Don’t trust the data informed by the manufacturer. You could buy a TN 1ms and in reality it’s 5ms and vice-verse. It’s like the old “Watts PMPO”, “dynamic contrast”… All bullcrap.
If you REALLY know those monitors have 1ms or 3ms or 5ms, as in you found a objective review like those from TFT Central, Rtings and others, then the difference really doesn’t matter unless you’re korean on a lethal dose of adderall.
Sounds counter intuitive because 1ms to 5ms sounds a lot, but in reality the difference gets lost in the mixture of game response time, ping, monitor input lag, mouse, frame time and so on. Even at 144Hz for instance, that’s a frame update interval of around ~6ms.
Check that displaylag website to see if the monitors you’re looking at are on there.
Get the TN. When i was looking for a new monitor I tried out several different ones with overwatch and the 144hz ips felt totally wack compared to the other ones. The TN and VA panels felt very smooth and responsive and the ips didn’t feel like it was actually 144hz even though it technically was. So yeah I think response time makes a big difference.
