Can someone who plays moira above mid diamond explain to me when i should switch between healing and damage?
I feel like i should only be damaging when i run out of heals, is that the right mentality?

Using primarily healing orbs and feathering m1 can keep your heal resources in a decent place.
I do most my dmg when my team is up a player or two to replenish heals in between pushes.
I would try to always do damage when you don’t have to heal to keep your recources maxed. If you don’t have any recources your only way to heal is the orb, which is not that reliable. I also sometimes switch between healing and damaging, as your primary heal has a little bit of a lingering effect on it.
No. You have to read the situation. Of course Moira doesn’t have the highest DPS so keeping your team healed and letting them do the damage is not the worst thing. But your damage is also not meaningless. If you can secure a kill you should do it.
heal your team above all else, cycle between damage and heals when your team isnt about to die in order to sustain your juice. damage all you want when your team doesnt need healing.
when you run out of juice your healing priority depends on how close your team is to dying, even when you are running on empty you will get a tap of healing every second or so which will give around 80 ish healing over a few seconds
this too, although thats also situational
Depends on who your off heals are, if you got a Zen off heal you should be throwing majority heals as he should be helping your team up their DPS by calling his discords. If you got a mercy with you, you can throw more damage than if you had a Zen as long as the Mercy is a legit mercy and not someone filling on Mercy. Moria can match mercy in healing which is why if you have a mercy you can throw more damage than healing.
I don’t play that much moira, but some of them kill me when they are behind me.
You can’t seem to hear or sense that she is even there you just realize your health bar is going down and by time you figure out it’s because of moira it’s usually too late.
I’ve peaked at high Masters and have played Moira a fair amount.
You can actually use her damage whenever you aren’t healing because it doesn’t need to reload, and you need to get used to what the situation calls for.
Sometimes instead of healing your team you need to finish off that weak enemy, or you could have your healing bar nearly depleted and by taking a break from healing to damage an enemy, you could keep your heals topped off.
A skilled Moira will be able to keep enough heals in the bank so she’ll very rarely ever run out when her team needs heals. A few tips I can give to help you keep topped off are this:
1.) If a team mate isn’t in immediate danger, wait until you get your healing/damage ball off cooldown and use a healing ball to heal up your team, it will save your resources for a more critical time.
2.) Tap Moira’s damage attack to deal half the DPS (25 instead of 50) but recharge your healing reservoir at close to, if not, twice the rate! This is a bug I believe but like the healing through shields was a bug (now it’s fixed), this bug has become part of her kit and not using it while you can is holding yourself back.
I’m a high diamond support player, and I can give you some tips.
When you start playing Moira, you think “wow, this chick does a lot of damage”, but believe me, she really doesn’t. Don’t go for damage.
Use primarily healing orb. I barely use the damage orb, unless it’s a 1v1 and my opponent is at 1 health. Healing orb brings a lot of ult charge and you can push with it.
Heal the F out of your tanks. They bring a lot of ult charge and aren’t spread out, usually fighting at the choke. Chasing your squishies to heal them will waste you time and that juicy ult charge.
If you run out of healing juice, tap your enemies. If you don’t understand what I’m saying watch KarQ’s video of Moira tips Vs every hero. Tapping your enemies will bring double the healing juice with the trade off of doing less damage. After you’re full, keep doing ya thing.
Take duels. If you aren’t in a high level, you can take 1v1s with the following heroes: Tracer, genji, soldier WITHOUT ROCKETS (important, if he hits his rockets he has a good chance of killing you), McCree (with flash on cooldown), sombra, zenyatta, and Ana (with sleep dart on cooldown). In lower tiers these heroes demand good mechanical aim to kill a Moira, which they could lack. Never take on 2 people at once, they can shred you down.
If you did all of the steps, you should get used to getting your ult Insanely fast. That’s why I prefer healing over damage as Moira, it brings a hell of a lot of ult charge. Don’t wait to use it, it’s not that valuable. Treat is as a 40 second cooldown ability, and trust me, good Moiras can get their ults way quicker than that. Use the ult at the first chance you can use it. If you get nothing out of it, don’t worry! You’ll get another one in a second. Don’t be afraid to use it as soon as you get it, there is no point to save the ultimate. Remember to always throw an orb before you cast your ult, you’ll get another one as your ult ends, so there is no downfall to doing this.
I hope these tips will help you get better as Moira. You should also look up at KarQ’s Moira video, he has special tips against every hero there.
Moira is played differently between every high level player that uses her. You really can have a huge range of “styles” for how you approach your gameplay. The two major mindsets for Moira are:
There really isn’t a guarenteed best way of going about things because of how dynamic and fast paced the game is. In general though, think about if you have enough time before your ally is killed to eliminate the one hurting them. It only takes 2 seconds to delete a 200 hp target if you focus on dmg. If you think the enemy cant kill your friend that fast, use the purple juice.
You should always prioritize healing over damage. I used Moira as one of my main heroes to climb from 3500 to 3900, and peaked over 4K. I split it about 80% healing, 20% damage. Never underestimate the healing orb and the ridiculous amount of healing it allows for. In the middle of fights, I almost always use the healing orb. Damage orb is mainly to be used to poke for easy ult charge before fights, or if you’re caught in a 1v1 scenario. I see a lot of Moira players overuse the damage orb and forfeit the incredible healing that the healing orb offers.
Also, your LMB has a heal over time, so tapping it lightly is a great way to heal someone and still conserve resources.
Also, I would recommend tapping your biotic grasp on enemies instead of holding it. Assuming you’re accurate with it, it will generate healing resource faster than you would by holding it down. The only time you want to hold it down is in the rare occasion when you’re using it to secure a kill. If you’re full on resources and there’s no low HP targets, do not waste your time using it. It’s damage output is way too low to kill players on its own.
Sounds like really hard tunnel visioning
Still at 3.3k sr many Moira mains keep throwing dmg orbs before a fight or wasting the healing bar.
My advice is to throw rarely dmg orbs because healing orbs are the right choice in most situations.
Fade is an escape cooldown don’t fade to the enemy genji just because he’s low.
Keep switching from primary healing to secondary fire is a good way to handle the healing bar
This. When entering a team fight I will always throw healing orbs to bounce around off the walls (I find throwing them diagonally toward the direction of the fight being really beneficial) along with using the primary healing. I then use damage to help clean up low health enemies, and in between healing to keep your levels topped up. As a rule of thumb, I typically see my healing stats 3 times higher than my damage.
I always pick healing orbs over damage unless it’s the beginning of a round, or I see an ulting genji going for me, which is when I fade, throw and orb and damage. That said, I will sometimes throw a damage orb into a tunnel or room with a group of enemies as it can help your ult charge quickly. However again, if there is a team fight going on in said room or tunnel, I’ll always use a healing orb.
