Moira’s Ult in the World of Overwatch

Moira is my favourite character, I love everything about her, her character and abilities, especially her ultimate. Visually it looks so cool, however how does it work in the world of Overwatch?

It heals and damages at the same time which is fine in gameplay, heals allies and damages enemies but in the lore of the game wouldn’t that be a bit redundant? So her allies and enemies are getting healed and damaged both at the same time. They’re just constantly getting healed and damaged so it has no effect really. This bothers me a lot and I’d love for some sort of an explanation!

Yeah I’m not too sure, they made it so Ana actually fires two types of darts but I’m not sure how Moira’s ult would work, that being said I don’t think most ultimates are actually canon or at least not exactly

True, it’d be cool to see if she actually fires two separate beams, a fully damage one or a fully healing one. That could be a cool concept for an ability in Overwatch 2 maybe also.

It does not work at Overwatch lore at all. At least now. Not all gameplay abilities and ultimates are canon, some of them exist only for sake of game mechanics.

Some of them (like Mercy’s ressurect) are actively opposed canon, some - seriously modified to look much more realistic (D.va’s ult, Ana’s healing/damaging darts).

We’ll never now, how Moira ultimate functions lore-wise before we’ll see it appears in lore.

Lore-wise…perhaps by “allies,” it’s specifically just the people she mutated, such as Reaper. They could say that there was now a specific gene or trait created by the mutation that would enable the healing effect where as it would only harm “normal” people. Kinda’ like how kryptonite doesn’t do anything to humans but it’ll wreck a Superman.

My friend actually theorised the same thing, that could very well give it some sense!

I think one way to think about Mercy’s rez is, in canon, it instantly heals anyone who is critically injured to the point that they are immobile and out of commission, and maybe on the brink of death, where as her regular healing just heals them.

We saw her do this with Mei in the OW2 cinematic, and she didn’t use her staff to do it. She even said “let’s get you back in the fight!”. The gameplay itself also implies this. A lot of heroes who are rezzed by her say a voiceline that implies that they were never dead, just out of commission. I think Tracer says something like “I thought I was a goner!” or something like that.

Makes a lot of sense.

What if the beam just sent bacteria into your body through skin contact, and it would scan your DNA for a specific trait.

If it has the trait, it acts as an antibody or healing bacteria, if it doesn’t detect the trait it destroys the DNA and acts as a virus, destroying the person from the inside.
