What happened to the old Mercy who could literally rez everyone on her team!? Why did Blizzard change that? Is it because it was too good? Is it because people were getting tilted about it? Why!?!?!?
People were complaining how it can bring back everyone and she could hide and do it
Although I wonder if it could work in 2020
Ehh i would say it was a lot of things,
- Super strong at low levels where there is no communication.
- Greedy mercys just using it for POTG but not actually to help the game.
There may have been ways to change it instead of just getting rid of it but I an understand why they did it.
i think if it had stayed, the overwatch population would not be what it is today…
I’d condense it down to this:
- Promotes playing extremely safe and sometimes downright passively by staying in the far back to make sure you’re alive to ult, what was perceived as “hiding”. This goes against the idea of a support actually out there helping their team when they need them the most. Note, not everyone used the ult like this but it could be used this way fairly effectively at times.
- It’s tilting when you see yourself do something impactful then have it “taken away”.
- It tended towards the extremes, being too good in lower tiers while in most cases not being very good at all in high tiers.
- Struggles implementing counterplay outside dealing with it retroactively that wouldn’t make the character useless in most tiers.
It’s BS. It’s dead. Rest. In. Pieces.
Onwards and upwards.
So, it played out kind of like this:
Blizzard was trying to make Mercy meta by buffing her ultimate. Seriously, Mass Resurrect caught several buffs during its life time. The last one it got was invulnerability for Mercy herself while her team was coming back. However that buff deleted the clearest, most obvious counter play to Mass Res, which lead to complaints. Lots of complaints. Some from a particular fairly influential streamer.
At this point, what Blizzard should have done was undo the invulnerability buff and buff Mercy some other way. Instead, Blizzard deleted one of their most iconic ultimates in the game… and by extension Mercy’s original play style.
Though I am also somewhat convinced they did it for OWL and how they wanted OWL to mimic IRL sports as much as possible. There’s no IRL sport in the game where a rule can completely undo a fantastic play with zero warning. Mass Resurrect though… well that’s exactly what it was capable of.
The game has been significantly worse ever since.
Its gone, i prefer it but i dont think it will come back unless ALOT of people want to see it.
But after the last time we tried to get it those people might have effectively ruined it for everyone else. sigh
Pretty much this. Mercy was a D-tier hero for most of the game’s lifespan prior to her rework, with Lucio/Zen or Lucio/Ana being the meta choice prior to that. Their reasoning for reworking Mercy wasn’t even that Resurrect was too powerful or anything it was because it “felt bad” to play against… like every hero in OW doesn’t feel bad to play against in some capacity.
It just happened to coincide with OWL, conveniently enough. I sometimes wonder what OW would be like today if OWL was a thing that never happened. We’d probably still have a lot things we don’t today.
This has been my theory for the longest time, they probably found out about OWL, and got straight on the Mercy rework. I mean it would be awkward for a big play to happen then this angel just… undoes it.
It was too easy to use (one press of a button undoes everything the enemy team did) and abuse (hiding and telling your team to just die on point).
Fights would be decided by who held on to res longer to get a bigger res and turn the fight around completely.
That’s why it was removed.
Players QQ’ed that her 1 button push, could completely undo their… 1 button push. Rarely did they remember that… “oh there is a Mercy, maybe we shouldn’t blow every ult at once, and save one or two for after the rez.” No see big brain play like that was hard in the beginning.
This wasn’t how it was used in the pro scene though. They were good enough to plan ahead of Resurrect, rendering the ultimate useless.
It was only used to bring back one to two people instantly.
True but the potential was still there.
Blizzard Reason:
- It creates a game of hide and seek for Mercy, which makes her ask her team to go fight and die on point and the she’ll come in and bring them back.
Real Reason:
- Because one pro Genji main complained about it. That his fun is ruined after killing everyone on the enemy with his ultimate.
Ain’t coming back honey.
Cause its a dumb mechanic and made the egirls sit in a corner the entire fight in hopes they can land a 5 man rez.
That same thing goes to Junkrat hiding behind the enemy, waiting to kill everyone with his rip-tire.
It promoted a playstyle where you hide and force your team to die in order to get value.
Plus, killing an entire team twice just feels bad to play against.
Also, she’s had Valkyrie for twice as long as she had Old Rez
…is not coming back. There, I ended the statement for you!
It’s been three years, they’ve said so many times it’s not coming back and Valkyrie is here to stay. They even implied they’d remove E rez and keep Valk if necessary to balance her.
Can we please stop talking about it now? Thanks
- Promoted hide and seek gameplay for Mercy. It was sooo boring.
- Unfun to play against as the enemy team
- Punished good ult combos if you couldn’t find the Mercy hiding in a room 30m away from point
- Promoted toxicity on all sides (ppl flamed their Mercy for not getting a big rez or told her to hide w ult, Mercy told her team to die on point, enemy hated playing against it)
- Kept her pretty unbalanced, she was super weak in pro play, yet annoying on ladder, and near OP in low ranks. Had no room to get any utility in her base kit either.
- No counter play
