Mercy needs a rework... badly

At this point a lot of players would agree with me if I told them 6v6 was better than 5v5. This last year of Overwatch has pretty much proven that statement. A lot of heroes needed reworks in order for this 5v5 format to be as “balanced” as possible, but we all know the blizzard developers don’t know what they’re doing.

One of the biggest elephants in the room has got to be Mercy. Before all the Mercy mains start getting angry with me. Just read everything I have to say please. I am not here to rag on Mercy players. Your hero is a part of the game, which means she is not safe from genuine criticism.

I am no Mercy specialist, but I do have an unreasonable amount of time on Overwatch across several accounts, playing mostly dps and support. That being said, I will not speak on the tank role because I’m honestly just not versed enough in it’s gameplay to make comments on balancing.

Mercy has been for years, a problematic hero. Notice how I said problematic, not overpowered. On one hand Mercy can feel like a liability. She doesn’t really interact or even attempt to confirm eliminations, and her kit requires a teammate to be in her LOS at all times otherwise she’s a sitting duck. On the other hand, she can be extremely frustrating to play against. You can spend an entire team fight chasing her to no avail because there simply isn’t a hero on the dps roster that can realistically keep up with Mercy without getting shut down trying to chase her. Let’s also not forget that she can give any hero a damage boost, and anyone who has played this game for any amount of time knows exactly how it feels to start a game, look up, and see pharah and Mercy attached to each other. enough said on that topic lol.

Now let’s get into the actual problematic part of Mercy. It’s not the fact that she can move fast around the map. It’s not because she has a smaller hitbox than every other character. It’s because there is no part of Mercy’s kit that requires her to actively engage in the team fight and to top it all off a lot of Mercy “techs” are just bugs that blizzard never fixed. She is literally by design, tilting to play against.

Did you have to burn all of your resources to kill that Orisa?? Too bad because Mercy just revived her and there was nothing you could do because she was behind a solid wall. Did you want to try and dive that Mercy in the enemy backline? You can’t do that because it’s first choke on King’s Row and Mercy is attacking so she’s not even going to be on your screen.

The bot tier spectator style gameplay has no place in Overwatch. We need more people to say this stuff because its blatantly obvious that Mercy is one of the outliers of OW2, but everyone is too scared of the Mercy community (including blizzard) to speak the truth.

Well, idgaf. Mercy is an issue and she needs to be reworked into something other than a pocket hero that spectates the team.

Hell yeah, tell 'em Dimitri. No more reworks!

Mercy already had a rework going into OW2 with omnidirectional GA

It was nice knowing you BigWheel.

Oh brother. No one is scared of the Mercy community. She’s the most complained about hero in the game and most Mercy players gave been pretty patient given the constant onslaught of whining. I’m not a Mercy main and even I’m sick of it.

She is literally not designed to tilt you. No hero is designed to tilt people. You being tilted is not a conspiracy.

This is objectively untrue. She has no “bugs” in her movement/kit at all. Her current superjump and slingshot and all of its mechanics are officially coded-in features added in the second OW2 beta.

Pharah literally got reworked this season so that Pharmercy can’t sit in the sky anymore.

It’s like you wrote this post a year ago and are just now posting it.

Anyways, Rez should definitely be replaced with a different ability (and has potential to be in the future after what Spilo said about the creator summit), with her given one charge of it during Valkyrie to keep it somewhat in her kit. And she could use some sort of overload mechanic on her currently unused reload button to add more nuance and depth to her healing.

But nothing you wrote is really meaningful or relevant to a realistic conversation of what a rework for her would look like. Blizzard WANTS her to be a defensive “spectator” hero who doesn’t often interact directly with the enemy team. They literally said they were designing Lifeweaver in the same way to make another “Mercy-like” support because she is so popular with her playstyle being how it is. And you think they would rework her to get rid of that?

lol.

Any rework she gets in the future will still try to keep her in line with that design goal of being a pure support hero whose focus is on supporting her team with utility and CDs rather than attacking or debuffing the enemy. And that’s fine. That’s her intended hero fantasy. And it has been since 2016. I’d say it’s worked out pretty well so far considering she’s one of Blizzard’s most popular, profitable, and played heroes.

Stop asking for reworks.

The Devs are always going to rework heroes and I think it’s kind of silly and unproductive to pretend otherwise. I think the best we can do is give them feedback and ideas for what would be good in a rework to a hero and what we wouldn’t want to see in one.

They’ve already said that Cassidy, Reaper, and Ball are their immediate priority for overhauls/reworks and based on what Spilo said about the Creator Summit Mercy rez is on the radar too.

Most of the OW2 reworks have been overall fun and positive changes, especially the recent Pharah one, and the Bastion and Sombra ones were also really successful. So not sure why anyone thinks we should leave heroes with problematic kits in the dust. Obviously change is scary but I don’t think any heroes have really been butchered with reworks since OW2 launched.

Mercy rez, for example, is one of the most unfun and frustrating abilities to play against. It’s also pretty widely disliked and regarded with disdain among Mercy players, especially the top ranked ones. Having an ability that can only be used 4 times a game and is reliant on allies dying in specific places next to cover isn’t very fun.

If it got reworked into a normal CD ability that Mercy could actively use to turn teamfights and make more plays more often, while also not feeling as frustrating to play against as rez, I think that would be a positive change for the game and the hero. And I say this as someone with way too many hours on her.

Res is something charismatic and original about her, eliminating her Res would leave her even worse than she already is, they already eliminated her massive res years ago… her phrase “heroes never die” would no longer make any kind of sense, nor other phrases that she has when she resurrects, you would be deleting something from her CORE, 30 seconds cooldown.

That’s great! So was Torb armor pack and Cassidy flashbang and Hog’s one shot and Doom’s one shot punch and Pharah’s perma flight!

Doesn’t make it healthy nor does it mean it has any right to stay in the game.

That being said, I literally just said I’d want them to rework her E ability and give her one charge of rez during Valkyrie to keep in somewhat in her kit.

But also, the Devs already took the feedback about Rez at the creator summit and implied it will be addressed

I mean they already moved this voiceline from Rez back to Valkyrie and this line makes perfect sense with any sort of healing ability or ultimate.

If the hero would be more fun and viable because of it then I really don’t care.

And I probably have a lot more playtime on Mercy than you do.

are we talking about mercy or kiriko? or maybe moira…? do you not play tracer? sombra???

Res should never be deleted, if this happens:

  • Remove Baptiste Immortal Field
  • Ana nano
  • Zarya bubbles
  • Sigma and Rein shields
  • Etc…

It’s not really up to you tho is it

If you delete her RES, you are removing something unique and original from her CORE, something that was already nerfed years ago and has a 30 second cooldown (very high).

Res should never be removed, add it to your ULT, but something unique and original should never be removed from it.

Res will probably never be deleted, the most logical thing that could happen to res is having to need LOS to res and not being able to res under a bridge or behind a wall etc

lol if they ever do that they will buff the cast time a signifigant amount to compensate so instead of Mercy having to be smart and use cover and map geometry to pull off cool rezzes she will just rez anywhere in front of your face and fly away

But let’s remove skill expression and make the ability even more one dimensional and boring!

to me its just wierd they always designed mercy with vertical mobility but only really talked about it after a bug has been discovered and has been added into her base kit with 0 compensations.

all i am saying is, if suddenly reaper manages to fly with a bug and reaper mains love it and blizzard adds it to his base kit with like rmb, but doesn’t rebalance him with this new mobility aspect.

that was always a mistery to me. she basically got a massive buff without any thoughts on balance.

it was always possible yes, but i failed to see where that was an original design intention. So in my eyes blizzard is not calculating this in balance.

now we have the stats that it isn’t borderline breaking her but it makes the job at getting her much harder given flankers usually don’t hang out in the sky.

not saying delete SJ, just saying it doesn’t feel like blizzard thought about it and just gave it a pass. ignoring what it means for the balance. (we know it didn’t break her after all this time)

Then you clearly have not been paying attention to patch notes ever considering her slingshot and superjump were reworked in the OW2 beta and the CD of GA has since been nerfed from 1.5 seconds to 1.5-2.5 seconds when using said additional mobility tech. I would say an almost 67% CD nerf is a big change to compensate for additional vertical mobility.

Statistically she is performing quite badly this season and is likely to get buffs in the next couple of patches

Have you not played OW in a year or something like OP?
