Mei's new "Deep Freeze" is a failed mechanic

Everyone is talking about freeze or the m1… you do realize her wall is actually what makes her useful right? You know, making terrain to stop people from escaping. Or cutting people off to allow your team to get the kills. I got to GM one tricking Mei because I abused the wall mechanic. Boohoo, you have to think now. Grow up and use your brain and use more than her m1.

They nerfed wall into a near afterthought. One character can bust through in seconds, most can go over and through, one break and a tank can fit through.

Sure it’s still useful in a few situations, but for how much they de-powered it they really should have given her something else.

Mei used to be able to force a 1v1 and win. Now she forces a 1v1 she’s kinda killing herself.

When your primary fire is a team resource, the character feels crappy.

This may sound arrogant but if you wall off an enemy even in a 1v1, with what Mei has skill and if you have any remote aim you should win the duel 9/10 times. And a big thing is that in ladder with no to little communication they are fighting for their lives and has no idea where the break even is after that 1 second or longer. And the clips was a horrible job at showing deepfreeze. In the first clip it didn’t even trigger (no sound or visuals happened) and did not bother using wall to cut off the obviously escaping Moira. In the second clip he played way closer than needed to (allowing himself to take too much damage) and missed an easy right click when he did get deepfreeze. She is a team character. We have plenty of hardcore duelers already, use her to support the team via slows/disruption/walls and you will see much more value. And the primary fire is only one of her multiple team resources, and has never been the main one in O2

You can aim all you like. If your primary damage (which is not her primary fire) has a delay AFTER you hit the button and a cadence for fire that can be learned and danced around, you’ll lose. I’m not going to pretend I’m some infallible player, but on almost any instant damage character (one where you push the button and damage immediately happens) I’m winning far more duels.

When it was 100 DPS it was a pretty good weapon. But for some reason they took away what felt GOOD and wasn’t annoying and managed to make it worse feeling to play Mei AND annoying for everyone else.

That is fair and I have experienced that. But that’s why you play around that. I have had so many people try to abuse the small wind up which isn’t even that long tbh but guess what, that’s why I track them since the projectile is pretty freaking fast. So it doesn’t matter when they try to dodge and that’s how Tracers and so easy to kill as her. I won’t lie a hitscan (or instant damage you call it) can outclass her but that is why she has a lot more health than a normal dps. To take the hits and kill back.

Yea, a bit too good due to what the rest of her entire kit does as well. And it was annoying since she was doing so much damage combined with her CC and walls. Even if the synergy between the two with deepfreeze is iffy, I am able to use it consistently to confirm kills, mess up tanks, and make sure it is harder for others to escape to help the team.

She has that health because she USED to be expected to fight in close quarters and was expected to take damage engaging. Her icicle can be used for ranged engagement but again that cadence makes it relatively easy to avoid at distance. She was supposed to brawl.

It did not make her perform especially well in any particular metric. She was middle of the pack in almost everything except pickrate when they changed her.

Deepfreeze potentially could be much better, if nothing else it needs more indication that it’s ready. It’s again something that didn’t need to be changed and the extra slowdown has been cited again and again as something super annoying for already slow and poorly mobile characters while it’s intended targets (highly mobile characters) all are relatively unaffected by it. The only character it actually works against that it was intended to is ball.

Again it was an unnecessary change of an entire dynamic, is hated by both players of the character and her opponents, and made her LESS potent as an individual pick. Something that’s counter to what every other character is being geared towards.

They might make it work eventually but as someone who STILL picks her it’s currently frustrating and dissatisfying. In the morass that is QP solo queue she’s just weaker.

The problem is more that the devs can’t decide if she’s a DPS or a tank, and have opted for a jack of no trades approach instead. Just pick a side Blizzard. My personal vote would be tank since she’d make tanking more enjoyable IMO.

And she can still brawl. Brawl teams still have her get used 90% of the time. Only Queen comps really dont really run her. So she is still able to fight long range and close range.

I am actually ignorant on the pickrate topic. So in what setting? Or do you mean total in that season?

True. It was not meant for true high mobile characters. But characters that can work on, or force cooldowns which is invaluable. But against high mobility that’s what the right click is for. I will also agree that deepfreeze can be better and changed. But it is not the end of the world for her, she can still use everything including deepfreeze well enough.

I also play her constantly. She is my main dps. It is still so easy to get value.

Are you talking about OWL? Because that’s a whole other game.

I mean once OW2 released and was out for a bit her pickrate in all games was meh. Lower end of middling but she was at least being used semi-regularly. If her pickrate was high it would indicate she’s especially powerful or if it was hugely disproportionate to her winrate it would indicate she was especially niche… but it wasn’t, She was on the lower end of alright. So why did they basically nerf her?

… I dunno what kind of shot prediction you have, but if I hit a tracer or genji, most of the time it was a lucky guess.

I don’t want to just “get value”. I was having fun before, now I’m not. Others are also having less fun playing against her. So why change it? I can make her work. I can help, but playing a character shouldn’t be like squeezing a juiced lemon.

When there is brawl there is Mei, that is what I always noticed. Just personal experience I suppose.

This is my opinion on pick rate. How good a character is + how fun they are tend to be the factors.
Edit: So I’m saying you are probably right on people not liking the “fun” aspect of her.

And this is where we just have far too different opinions. I still have fun, but some others do not. Everyone has their own definition of having fun with a character. I like this enough, some do not. So I will respect that opinion and stop the argument. I hope you have a great rest of your day and thank you for this discussion.

It really wasn’t.

Screw the playerbase, they complain about every thing. Mei should get her old freeze back.

Funny how you have all the freeze complainer being more happy that Mei is a worthless wallbot just because died to her entirely preventable mechanics and Thats Terrible™.

Anyways, Mei was another victim of PR balance, where nothing can get between low/mid tanks spamming Rein/Soldier and anything that might punish their arrogance and/or idiocy needs to be neutered.

I wonder how it’d play if they made it that it completely froze you, but only for like less than half a second, so it’d be a disruption move like hack

Your response agrees with the topic

Who is stupid enough to combo the 2, it’s way too clunky.

Icicle for Squishies, snow for tanks.

i dont think so…if it were a video of the ability itself not doing anything maybe…but missing a followup?

like the old freeze still required you to land your followup…if you missed it then it also did “nothing”

look im not coming on here to say its a great ability…but the reason shouldnt be “oh the target moved”…like thats on the user

and moira wouldve probably avoided old freeze as well…cause thats what they friggin do…lets give it to her during her ult as well!!!

The old freeze didnt let them move so you have to like intentionally miss

yeah and blizz has been doing away with those types of abilities for the most part (sleep is really only one left that isnt an ult)…cause there isnt a single person in all of OW that enjoys losing all control like that…

current one isnt perfect…but it does slow em down enough to where a top100 player shouldnt be missing from point blank range (a body shot would do there)…im willing to bet that guy gets that kill 90% of the time (as would most people probably)

so what do you propose the solution be?

Give her back her 100 dps on beam

ok…ive never understood this about OW community (as a whole):

if they move away from something its because they/community did not like how something worked or it caused an issue that required changing…things are not just reworked willy nilly

so why is it that whenever people dont like the change, the response is always - go back to the thing that they already decided they didnt want in the game…like theyre not going to do that

mass rez, old sym, scatter, brig, flashbang…etc etc

theyre not going to go back to old ice beam…theyre also not going to go back to the one we just had that they felt needed changing
