They may make a story around that.

it is a plausible theory, but the problem comes when they propose other past events. a short story, comic or archives mode that reconvert McCree’s name creates a strong nonsense to the choice declared by the development team, which has intended it to be a retcon of the name. among other things, they themselves have admitted that it will always be partial, considering that you cannot put your hand on editorial and media products (comics, artwork, cinematic) to change a name, it is simply complicated in every sense.
Finally, it should be specified that Blizzard often tends to be as drastic as it is silent if it is finally worth it. let’s take as an example the change of the voice actor Flynn Quinton in WoW: the accusations of him were still to be confirmed in the court, but in the meantime Blizzard has dissociated from the man quickly.
in the end the case was closed with the accusation of a woman who, rejected by the voice actor, began to stalk him (vilifying him online) and his family, and the judge agreed on the veracity of this story. but did Blizzard do something? did she take back her retcon? did he say anything about that hasty decision? no comment.
so it wouldn’t surprise me a total no comment to all future “hey blizzy, at this point they still call Mccree the cowboy, why do you complicate your life like this?”
