Maybe it's time we finally got Abilities/PvE

The Diablo event came back during the anniversary event, didn’t it?
I know they sold the skins 2 or 3 times.

Tbh I don’t remember.

On the wiki there’s no mention about its return. Skins were sold on Halloween iirc but the mode itself, I have no memory about any returnal. Especially this Halloween, I was expecting it and it didn’t come back.

If we finally get PvE for Overwatch- that would push Overwatch up in ranking, in terms of Destiny level.

Players would play if the content was good. Look at Black Ops 6 (6!!!) zombies. Six whole black ops games had a dedicated PVE mode and people still to this day love it. Why can’t Overwatch do that? Tell me? Junkenstien’s Revenge is similar to BOZ but without a lot of the depth, so just do Junkenstiens revenge and add more things.

You’re asking me to tell you why devs couldn’t come up with engaging and fun PvE ?

I’m not in the gamedesigners meeting, sorry. I can only tell my personal opinion : class based design doesn’t fit PvE and cooperation.
Its like Evolve : if you pick ONE medic in the team and that medic dies, as no other members can heal, game’s done.

If you look at good PvE games, it usually allow players to change weapons/abilities to adapt.

I see what you’re saying, but campaign is literally a thing in those games.
And zombies has like no cutscenes.

Do you remember early zombies releases? When the easter egg was just fiding 6 different thing on the map?

It even took a while longer for zombies to get the attention it needed.

No, the why is rhetorical. None of us can answer “why” beyond saying “because blizzard is incompetent”.

We could have an Overwatch mode like that if the developers wanted to do that. It would feel different from the PVP, and people would like that. Fortnite is getting an FPS mode, and Team Fortress 2 has a PVE mode where you can buff your character’s stats, so Overwatch could do something uniquely for a mode.

Realisticly though, I imagine each character would just get different variants of the same weapon. So Reinhardt would get hammers, axes, and some other large object that essentially just acts like his hammer.

I just think that if we had this stuff in 2010 (Campaign, PVE, PVP), then blizzard has no excuse for not having it in 2024 and beyond. People on this very forum genuinely said it’d be too hard for blizzard to do what companies have done over a decade ago, and it makes me feel like a lot of us here are lost causes.

the time was 2019 when game popularity was decreasing and needed something new and fresh, oh wait it was, overwatch 2 announcement was that this game needed, is too late, even the best and most free pve they relase will not save this game

what quantity lol? we have neither quality or quantity, a lot of skins per seasons isnt content, every season roadmap if you remove the pywalled aspects the season has nothing to offer

Iirc TF2 PvE isn’t that popular. Yet TF2 has a huge difference which is community support. The latest PvE Maps are totally done by community.

About Fortnite, its interesting to remind that there’s (or was) a PvE and nobody ever cared about it. Before Battle Royal, Fortnite was a dark weird game without any hype.

Knowing this, I’ve never understood why OW devs were still about PvE Mode… Like it didn’t work in fortnite, it didn’t work with Evolve, but for some reason, OW producers still believed in it…

if they relase free pve missions with story like the archives events with rewards people would play them, infinite replayability is impossible, but people want to play pve and see the story, they could implement the talent tree abilities, chose your kit, the enemies are there, a lot of maps are lore relevant, they can re use assets, is easy, they just dont want and are incompetent, they can make pvp work and is their only focus

PvE dragged the Overwatch team down. It led to the massive content drought, it led to misplaced priorities as the team tried to get PvE to work.

They need to focus on the main mode that made Overwatch great, and that’s the PvP, which is what the core game is.

I would not be opposed to PvE games being set in the Overwatch universe. But I don’t want it to be attached to, and distracting the developers from making Overwatch better. That should be done by a new team focused on a completely new game with no competitive multi-player elements in it.

because those events dont have story or interactions, duh, the tower defense was utter crap, we all knew it, maps didnt even had textures, there was no modifications to the enemies or maps, even when they promised they will update the mode, there was no rewards, thats why those modes sucked, archives events were always a success, duh

The funny thing they were doing that with underworld. But that was the worst thing ever according the community.

And outside like the diablo event, their has been almost nothing but hate, or disinterest in the PVE events that followed. With the discusion leaning into wanting the talents then the actual VS enemy modes.

So like… you can point a finger at community for why we dont actually have that.

MVM would be more popular with updates. When it first dropped, people grinded that mode to hell and back. Personally, I want a jungle map and a space station map.

The reason is PVE modes have more success than failure. Apparently, fortnites was fine, the BR mode was just WAY more popular. And Evolve…had a PVE mode? I have it installed, so maybe I’ll take a look.

However, “Campaign, Multiplayer” was the contemporary thing in games for decades. Modern games now are weird for just having multiplayer modes and massive cash shops to funnel money in; before that PVE content was (and still is) expected. Blizzard wanted PVE to work because PVE is something people will always want.

Make no mistake, the “Blizzard can’t possibly handle something that games on the nintendo 64 had, like PVE content” crowd is the minority. Most people want to fight Talon and Null Sector again. Why do you think the PVE mode was so hyped?

I don’t mean to rant, but man this game and live services as a whole has destroyed the minds of people playing it. They go “Yeah, it’ll be popular again, but players will leave the mode!”…that’s normal! Of course players will play it, enjoy it, and then wait for content. That’d be better than what we get now.

More like they orignally wanted to make an MMO, but also like… it turned into a massive time sync and got scraped.

Overwatch was in turn a side project that took those mechanics and ideas, and made a much smaller scale PVP game. That would have been the jumping off point for a much larger PVE game.

Then blew up in popularity, kind throwing a wrench into the whole plan using it as a jumping off point. When it became a completely different project all together.

Read play nice by jason schreier details.

I listed every reason, the price-tag being one of them, not an excuse.

One was a crossover event that will never return and the other was removed to incentivise buying Invasion because why would you pay for lore when you can just play it for free.

It’s not possible to prove people don’t want PVE simply because the missions they released didn’t sell. I personally didn’t buy them because they weren’t guaranteed to be an ongoing thing since Blizz had already said they weren’t doing PVE, and they lacked any type of coherence or satisfying gameplay loops to make it worth playing - there wasn’t really any story, no satisfying gameplay customization, and no otherwise enjoyable gameplay to make it worth it over just playing PVP.

If OW2 ever did a proper PVE campaign that focused on fun, I’d play it. But they were never going to…

Honestly I really don’t care for PVE in OW. The characters are so unique, how can any consistent gameplay experience be developed that is more complex than “Shoot the bots”

Lol, I’m talking about the disucusion and interest around the free stuff. Underworld as your free archives mission like we got the year prior, if you didn’t know.

They kept working at for quite a while, and just people either threw hate or were not showing interest and just weren’t sticking around with the replayable stuff like the tower defense or how underworld changed up the waves and attempted to throw curve balls mid mission.
