Mauga need more nerfs!

For the life of me i can’t figure out why they have made every other tank useless in comparison, He’s anti-fun, anti-balance and there is no reason to even try playing the match when he’s in it…

DPS passive is going to hit him so hard so I think there is no need.

He needs a gameplay adjustment/mini-rework. His playstyle is way too binary and overall pretty braindead. He needs more interesting skill expression in his kit if he’s ever going to be strong and healthy for the game.

Utilizing simple mechanics effectively is a form of skill expression.

I didn’t say he didn’t have any skill expression. I said he needs more if he’s going to be strong and healthy for the game. You can’t have a playstyle as binary as Mauga’s be meta or people will rage and the overall health of the game will suffer for it.

i think the issue is more w mauga’s actual design, like his playstyle is pretty much “do more damage than me or lose” and it just encourages this super simple, braindead approach to tanking

like mauga is essentially just a dps character, he doesn’t really need to play like a tank
but it’s not rlly the player’s fault because every bit of mauga’s kit rewards you for doing as much damage as possible

like mauga could be nerfed into oblivion but then he just becomes unplayable
I think the issue w alot of the ow2 tanks is that theyre extremely one-dimensional and really only have 1 suitable playstyle, whereas the successful and enjoyable tanks have a niche they can fill as well as being applicable to many other situations

Widow lands headshots, or doesn’t. Ana lands cd’s, or doesn’t. Doomfist lands punches, or doesn’t.

right but all of them have backup options, mauga doesn’t

if widow misses a few headshots, she can always reposition and look for a better angle, or grapple away from a diver, etc

ana… does a lot more than just landing cooldowns?

doomfist has so many options for what to do if he misses a punch

mauga doesn’t have anything to “miss” he just does damage, and hopefully enough to take space, if it isn’t he just kinda sits there doing nothing

ofc when he was meta it was because he could pop his cardiac thing and become essentially immortal while pumping out borderline unfair amounts of damage
but point is, mauga doesn’t have many options outside of disengaging and reingaging, your objectives with him is ALWAYS the same, because that’s all his kit allows him to do

If you could only have one, would you rather have a toolbox full of good but situational tools, or a multitool?

All of these are much more interesting and skill expressive than holding M1+M2 on the enemy tank, which is the optimal way to play Mauga in most situations. His kit needs more depth if he’s ever going to be allowed to stay strong or be well-liked by the community.

What is and isn’t liked is entirely subjective. Not everything needs to cater to everyone.

Mauga himself is not that hard to beat. The issue is when you pair him with other heroes like bastion and soldier/sojourn and perhaps zen. The volume of damage is just too much to cope with. Dealing with Mauga just requires your tank to either hide when he hits E or mitigate the damage so he doesn’t benefit from it. But add in another high damage hero that can fill in the gaps when Mauga has to withdraw and the damage is just constant and you can’t just cycle your CDs to handle it any more.

I don’t really think they thought out how he would work when paired with bastion who is the most obvious issue to go with him. And they didn’t think about the fact he has to always be shooting the tank or getting no return on his E.

Right, but being “healthy for the game” generally falls in line with how well-liked a character is. Why did Lifeweaver get nerfed even though he was still underperforming compared to the rest of the support roster? Because having an extremely easy support with inflated healing numbers is not fun or interesting to play against.

Same thing with Mauga. Player perception affects balance. It doesn’t matter if you like Mauga. If most folks don’t, he won’t be allowed to be strong.

Giving new and less skilled players something that gives them time to get used to the game and figure out what they like helps with player retention, which is part of game health. The n00b tube from CoD4 was hated by everyone good enough to not need it, but it gave those less gifted to get a hit of dopamine every now and then to motivate them to continue developing their skills and branch out.

Right. So if they want to keep him as a noob friendly “turn your brain off” tank option, he’s going to stay at the bottom of the tier lists. I’m not shaming people for enjoying Mauga. I’m just saying that’s how things work. There’s a reason Moira is almost never meta outside of unique scenarios. Same situation.

Personally, I think the overall tank roster already has a good diversity of difficulty and don’t think we need anyone as simple as Mauga. It’s not a matter of him being easy to pick up but hard to master. You can master him in about 15 minutes, and that’s what really going to hold him back.

Mauga’s introduction did double the number of non-shotgun hitscan tanks. It’s not always going to be a top hit, but having more options is better than not.

I’m definitely not against his inclusion. I think there’s plenty about his kit that’s fun and interesting, but it still feels like a half-baked concept when most of his playstyle boils down to holding down both mouse buttons on the closest target, which is almost always the enemy tank. I would prefer if his playstyle focused more on spreading his burning to increase his survivability. Something as small as that would make him go from incredibly simple with a low skill ceiling to much more nuanced and skill expressive.

It’s fine to have characters that are easy to pick up but there should definitely be more skill expression that what is currently offered by Mauga.

The devs just need more time to explore hitscan tanks with real range. There’s only so much you can do with a character that activates neurons by rattling them around. In time, he’ll feel bad compared to the railgun tank or the autocannon tank. Right now though, his only real gameplay competition is Orisa, another tank who bodyblocks and shoots a rapid-fire gun.
