Matt booty ' s studio viability checklist

This is what he said when asked about closing down tango studios despite critically acclaimed titles like ghostwire and hifi rush.

He mainly alluded it to the studio not having it’s visionary leader
Shinji meikami who left to start his own studio.

He told a set of things about studio future viability

There are a lot of things that go into success for a game," he said.

"What leadership do you have? What creative leadership do you have? Is the team the same team that shipped something successful previously?

“And we have to look at all of those things together and then ask ourselves, are we set up for success going forward? And while there may have been factors and situations that previously led to success, they may not all still be in place as you look at what you’re doing going forward.”

That sounds pretty threatening for a huge studio head to say out loud in press, is it like a warning call to other studios about future closure to get their act together.

How do you think overwatch 2 fares in this questionnaire.

Hi-Fi Rush went from 6k peak players on release to a few hundred on average in no time. Granted, only on Steam, idk if they released the game on other PC platforms.

Not comparable to Overwatch in any way.

Only if you don’t look at it as part of zenimax.

That’s 4 studios also cost of development or maintenance of those teams must be lower right.

Eitherway not talking for tango but matts checklist.

Honestly I think that checklist is very flexible depending on how much money a game makes

Do they really care about “creative leadership” or if it’s the same team that shipped it originally if a game is making good amounts of money? I know there’s this thing about the Overwatch team not getting bonuses, I really don’t know what exactly that means for the game, but with how many people play Overwatch I have to believe they make at least a decent amount of money in the eyes of Microsoft.

I don’t have any worries of Microsoft shutting down Overwatch while it is being played as much as it is today, Team 4 is likely not being considered in this questionnaire. My worry are the people actively working on the game instead

On the one hand I want the devs to feel pressured, on the other hand I’m worried what they will do under pressure

I’m pretty sure overwatch is profitable just probably didn’t meet goals like make a billion a year or something, Bobby used to be fond of saying that.

Also given that this game was just a update and not revolution were you redevelop a title

It should definitely be more profitable given ow1 had everything covered .

Pretty good.

He’s looking for “Run the Business” dollars, ideally in the form of microtransactions and subscriptions, and Overwatch provides that with a low overhead cost.

But also that’s why I keep pointing out how laughable it is when people basically say “Esports and High ELO should only be the ones catered to, and we don’t care if that shrinks the playerbase”.

As if the devs would just look at that, and think “Yeah, that’s worth losing job security for”.
