Matchmaking, Queue Times, and the Future

I’m noticing that queue times are longer lately, especially in Arcade - which just now took over 11 minutes for 4v4, which is insanely long for such a popular mode.

But it’s not just Arcade, it’s across all game modes, and my guess is it’s because with the season ending and most players having completed their BP or comp goals, they’re signed off until next season.

Which brings me to the matchmaker, which we know is looser in QP in order to get games started quickly. But as I understand it, next patch they are going with wide matches so there is no rank requirement to group up in comp.

Is the problem that players are overall leaving this game and not returning as often? Or not at all? Is this game really losing population? Because if so, doesn’t this mean we’re gonna have even more looser matchmaking just to keep queue times within an acceptable range?

Game quality has been so bad for a while, and the matchmaker has been giving us really bad results and lopsided matches. Yet it’s even worse in S9 and getting worse by the day here at the end of the season. Can we expect match quality to get abysmal with each passing season? What is the future of this game if this downward spiral doesn’t stop? And let’s not forget that with wide groups smurfing will be even more common to really blow it up.

I haven’t played lately, every little bit counts. Sorry everyone.

My queues have never gone over 2 minutes and usually they never go over 1 even…But I don’t play in RQ world

Wide groups are an awful idea

And while I don’t think the match quality is sooooooooooo far worse than before…I maintain that they should’ve never gotten rid of performance from the mmr equation….performance isn’t everything…but it isn’t nothing either

what I find funny, Titanfall 2 does not have a matchmaking system anymore (aside from “put X players into a match”) and dispite the games often having high skill differences, stomps arent as common and losses do not really feel bad as they are in OW2. Hell, Titanfall 2 is lucky if it reaches over 3k players in the daily peak but the matches are way better than in OW2.
Yet OW2, with a significantly larger playerbase and a active Matchmaking system, has a overall worse experience, Like how is that possible?
Yesterday, I played 4 matches, all in a 3 stack with my friends. We lost all, most not even close. After that we just said: “yep playing this game was not a good idea”

Its just sad considering Overwatch (1) is the most important game by far for us. We probably never would have met each other without it.

It is end of season week what do you expect, people are either excited for new stuff that they don’t want to play current stuff, or they did what they wanted to for the season…

Yes, I literally said that. I mean this is not new and draws attention to the matchmaker being looser whenever queue times need to be shorter. So with populating slowing, will matchmaking get even worse?

It will pick up next season cause people are curious, then it tapers of as season progresses, that is the life of a live service…

I know this. I literally said that too. Again, I am saying when population dwindles, queue times increase, and to make things faster, matchmaking is made worse. I am asking if this is where we’re going that matchmaking won’t get better until population skyrockets? Because right now most new accounts are smurfs.

Not 100% accurate, but steam shows a pretty steady player base
Why care about smurfs, you could always get better instead of whining about someone making a new account
