Matchmaker Balance

In patch notes they specify that the matchmaker balances the teams in a way to predict which team will lose and which team will win!

This is a shame, wouldn’t it be much more better to equally balance the 2 teams? And people still say that “matchmaker will not make us lose…” just read patch notes!

Ok… let’s do it again:
Do you know what equally balancing means? It means finding 2x5 people whose average MMR has to be the exact same. 2173 for example. Exactly 2173 for both teams.
Now, I hope you understand that this is, in most cases, not feasible to do without making people wait for hours to get a match. So usually you end up with one team having an MMR of 2170 and the other team having an MMR of 2175. The team with the lower average MMR will be “favored to lose”, the other team “favored to win”. This is just how MMR works. The team with the higher MMR has a higher statistical chance of winning.

This is how it works in every game, this is how it works everywhere team skill-based match making exists, this is how it’s supposed to work.

You say that, but compared to other games, it’s still tighter matchmaking.

Or at least it tries to be, with a limited supply of Tank players.

When playing I don’t feel a sightly difference between different teams skills… Matchmaker really force us in cases of 1000MMR vs 3000MMR

That’s your assumption. Just don’t act like the patch notes are evidence for it.

That isn’t quite what it says.

But, I suspect it is just a placebo patch note. Remember, the match maker has no access to your match results… So I suspect this is just a note in their to hopefully change peoples mentality a little when they lose.

Did you read the patch notes?

It will put us in the stronger team if we are in a loss streak. It’s clear that the match maker prefers to create a stronger team and a weaker team instead two balanced teams. If it can put us in a stronger team when we have a loss streak surely it will put us in the weaker team if we are in a win streak.

I did, but you apparently didn’t. Because that is not what it says.

I already had this debate in another thread, feel free to freshen up in there:

maybe they are trying to kill the game off for good like season 10 is already garbage

people still not understanding that a matchmaker has to provide opportunity for improvement (or the opposite)

ie - it has to match you against better/worse competition as you win/lose matches in order to establish whether or not you belong higher or lower…

you cant just go from gold to GM by only ever playing against gold level matches…

in any case this is not going to be a meaningful change as a losing streak would naturally mean you would play against worst competition anyway and the likelihood of the streak ending already decreased with every match

long story short: youre still going to hate the matchmaker and youre still going to blame it for stuff that it isnt responsible for

In the patch notes it clearly says the matchmaker creates a team with lower chances to win and the other with higher chances to win.

Yes. Because, as I explained above, it is practically impossible to find two sets of 5 people with the exact same average MMR:

Do you know what equally balancing means? It means finding 2x5 people whose average MMR has to be the exact same. 2173 for example. Exactly 2173 for both teams.

Therefore it does this:

So usually you end up with one team having an MMR of 2170 and the other team having an MMR of 2175.

Which means:

The team with the lower average MMR will be “favored to lose”, the other team “favored to win”.

And again:

This is just how MMR works. The team with the higher MMR has a higher statistical chance of winning.

Sometimes you’re in the higher MMR team, sometimes in the lower MMR team. The change is that now, when you’re on a losing streak, you won’t ever be in the lower MMR team anymore. You weren’t put in that lower MMR team on purpose, it just happens by pure chance. Half your games you’re on the higher MMR team, half your games on the lower MMR team. Well, before the change, at least.

That is how they call it when 2 teams are created and ones average MMR is -1.25 and the others is -1.30, the -1.25 team has statistically a “higher” chance of winning. But that is because the chances of 2 perfectly matched MMR teams is incredibly low, especially with stacks and whatnot.

But again. The match mater only has access to your MMR, not match results or stats… So this note is utterly meaningless. It is there purely to get a reaction.

people really expecting the game to make perfect matches every time?

and even then, people defy expectations all the damn time anyway because those numbers arent really all that indicative of anything and the game doesnt actually have an idea of what will happen

the 2200 SR avg team is very different from the 2100 SR team it got matched against…im sure it wins every time… /s

Loser queue just got worse imo. Since Blizzard is bad at predicting and usually thinks the favorite is actually the underdog. So you end up getting way more uphill battle wins than expected.

Well, I’m happy with the patch changes

I’m 10 losses in doesn’t seem to affect me

So the big question- Have they always had this capability and simply werent using it, or was the match maker always doing this and theyre just openly acknowledging / stating it now.

Its long, long been suspected by many people that overwatch uses an EOMM instead of a SBMM. This confirms that, even if it wasnt, it is using one now.
