Match Quality Decline Cause

TLDR: We know match quality is bad. Why?

It’s a pretty unanimous opinion that match quality has been tanking for at least the past week or two, for context, I’ve consistently floated up and down plat before the reset, got tossed in gold, and have been bouncing up and down in gold. I am not super concerned about rank I mainly play ranked to have longer/better matches. For MOST of the season even if I was losing or not having a good day, (until late hours) matches would be fairly close with only the odd snowball, random stat probably like 3/10 games.

My real question is why is this happening? The best answer I’ve seen and assumed for awhile is that if you’re playing drastically above/below your MMR (having a good or bad day), but it doesn’t match your current rank, it will try to place people with the opposite swing on your team. Assuming this is the issue (it might not im not Mr blizzard) it doesnt really help. This punishes the player having a good day by giving them a babysitting test, and rewards the player having a bad day by giving them a teammate on roids. I appreciate the carrys when im having a bad game but I can still acknowledge that the quality of the match was not great if not all players are equally participating…

As a tank, I’ve found that the higher I go, the better quality the matches become.

My conclusion is fairly obvious. Lower down, in your silver/gold/plats (and diamond to a lesser extent), people are horrifically inconsistent and don’t learn from mistakes and don’t make quick adjustments in match.

And that’s about it really.

I had this experience yesterday. I was stuck for hundreds of matches. Then I suddenly climbed 5 divisions because it became easier and easier. Super weird

You find that its not because players are mechanically more skilled (that does obviously help), but they are just more aware.

It’s why a gold player, will find they can compete in a diamond scrim, but you put them in a diamond ranked lobby and they’ll fold.

Incoming loss streak activated.

Sorry to pick on you but you post somewhat conflicting statements.

2 conclusions:
Lower ranks play inconsistent (I respectfully disagree).
Lower ranks play lack of awareness (I agree with you here).

Is it both? Or one factor higher than other?

The awareness issue is why I make suggestions to try to improve people’s awareness.

Comp style color codes
Bigger health bars
Mandatory see your teammates health thru the walls (it’s optional and I see supports run right past me when I’m low health, not expecting a full health but they can pop me a health pill).
Different stats
Scoreboard resets after rounds (scrims have MUCH BETTER STATS and stat overlays).
The qp team dynamic respawns should go to comp (especially if qp Mmr seeds comp).

Helping bring awareness to lower ranks would definitely improve match quality.

I’ll add the scrim environment is more inducing to try to win. People get offended sometimes if you point out bad performance/ bad plays, or they even treat comp like qp and only want to one trick into the ground.

I have no interest in reading what you’ve said. Sorry .

yes. Awareness is like 60% (at least) of what makes a good player good.
the rest is a combination of mechanical ability including aim, movement, and cooldown management (this last one may fall more under the “awareness” umbrella, but I digress)

They did all this hitbox/projectile increase to help the dps get kills, yet 90% of the dps is trash still :frowning:

No, it was to make the game feel more consistent with large ping variations.

Match quality has never been good. It’s just a different kind of such now.

Just played my last 2 comp games of the season and possibly ever. And quite fittingly it was a stomp win followed by a stomp loss.

I am waiting for a friend to finish their game so I am going to watch these… if they aren’t stomps I am going to be MIFFED.

Game 1 - defintely a comfortable win. wouldn’t call it a “stomp”. Point 1 Shamballi is a hard one to cap, they just got stuck after starting on a weaker comp and then eventually tilt swapped.

So the “stomp” if you want to call it that, was caused by their poor decisions on attack.

Game 2 - They had a Roadhog… Your team played Widow Tracer JQ… Roadhog is annoying.

I don’t know, or care, what rank these were, but one thing I see a lot of below diamond (laughing at it now on a plat account)… is everyone tries to be the hero. takes 1v1s, dies, then blames their team. Game spirals and they call it a “stomp”

All you need to do is just shoot the same person together, do that and you win a lot more fights.

Game 1:

3-0 with 2 min in bank vs. not even halfway to first point
total deaths 8 vs. 53
total elims 146 vs. 19

Game 2:

1-0 full hold vs. ez cap with 3 minutes remaining
total deaths 25 vs. 9
total elims 65 vs. 18

It doesn’t matter the cause, it matters the result. Poor decisions are obviously a factor. In fact I would argue the biggest factor in determining a player’s skill level.

What do you expect? You often have no choice when your team is outmatched. The only chance you have is taking a ton of risks you wouldn’t normally take.

A stomp is a stomp. Sure, it can also happen occasionally between two equally skilled teams but that is the exception not the norm.

So simply play like a cohesive unit in plat. Great advice for solo queue where people take offense if you even suggest an alternative strategy or hero swap.

It is interesting that people use KD stats as if they are important.

Was a Mercy played on either team? I can’t remember. If so, that will totally skew combined stats.

Ultimately, one game you worked together better (be it by design or accident) and won… the other the enemy team worked better and won. I don’t think this proves anything, but they were interesting to watch.

I did enjoy some of the Wrecking Ball play from yourself. I do have some tips to help you… but I won’t share them here for everyone.

Just like score often doesn’t tell the whole story in a soccer game either. Unless the final score is 10-0 then it kind of does.

Funny you mention that because the only Mercy was ours in the first game and our Mercy did as many elims as both of the enemy tanks combined.

Great observation, Einstein

As long as you continue to blindly defend the matchmaker to the death regardless of any evidence presented, nothing will ever convince you of anything.

After having seen your Ball I’m not sure if you are qualified. I am curious but I’m probably quitting the game soon. And I also heard they are reworking Ball next season.

You must have the good cheats that can actually counter this matchmaking, but no thanks I’m good

Agree

I haven’t. But there was no match maker issues in these games.

Given your aim… you might want to.

Rework is pushing it. They are changing how the shields function (a terrible change), adding some tech to the grapple and reducing its cooldown in some scenarios… They need to increase the damage of his guns a little.

Lol. so you are tilted and calling me a cheater because you won and game and lost a game… ok. whatever.
