Seeing as how the subject is picking up steam again, I’d like to point out something about Mercy’s old ultimate:
Calling it “Mass Rez” implies that it regularly raised the whole team, when in reality it was an extremely rare opportunity.
It would be more accurate to call it an “AoE rez.” It covered an Area of Effect, but it never garunteed that there would be 4+ corpses in that area.
Most of the time, if 4+ people on Mercy’s team died… Mercy was often included in the body count. If Zen or Lucio get caught up in an enemy ult, they can counter-ult to save everyone including thenselves… but Mercy 1.0 never had that luxury.
This was further enforced if the enemy team included mercy on their “priorty target” list. Gamesense-savvy players would made sure to either kill Mercy first, or use a dive hero to ambush Mercy while she returns from spawn and keep her busy while the rest of her team gets murderized.
Because of all the focus fire and inherent risk to “huge rezzes” (it was easy to re-wipe a rezzed team with a delayed burst damage ultimate), most mercy players balanced out the risk/reward ratio of rez by only rezzing 1-2 people at a time (and recharging their ult as fast as they can manage so it’ll be ready again when needed).
Old rez was normally used as a postmortem burst heal when Mercy’s standard healing got overwhelmed, and/or was deployed at strategic intervals to minimize trickling and keep up the momentum of the fight in mercy’s team’s favor.
This playstyle was called “tempo rezzing” and was a HELLUVA lot more effective at winning matches than literally throwing fights for the sole purpose of padding Mercy’s rez stats.

Mass rez in ow was one of the stupidest ideas in all of gaming I hope it never comes back except in pve that would be pretty cool.

Sorry I go into a violent rage whenever I hear about mass rez.

Some people forget she could rez from spawn in second point Anubis / third point Gibraltar.

And actually, in higher SR, it was not ‘kill Mercy first’, because back then teamfights lasted long enough that it was common to kill Mercy first, and then you kill another 2 or 3 enemies, but Mercy got back in time to just…rez them from barely out of LOS. So in higher SR, the phrase was never ‘kill Mercy first’, it was ‘Kill Mercy in the middle’. Also, and I see all day long Mercy players saying this wasn’t them, but Mercy players were smart to hide when they had rez. The same way a Lucio player hides when they have Beat and they know the enemy Sombra has Emp. You hide so you get value from your ult. And all this is, like you said, aside from the fact that Mercy could rez from invulnerability inside spawn on several points.
The problem is that Mercy’s successfully hiding could undo a whole team fight. It felt terrible. Lucio’s means he can maybe counter an ult (by Beating after EMP), and even then; the timing has to be immaculate. Mercy’s ult had much more forgiving timing.
Big Rez blew chunks. Blizz knew that and removed it. Arguing for no reason over what people called it means nothing; the intention is to rez several teammates at a time, if possible. Literally no one hears people refer to the years removed ‘Big Rez’ or ‘Mass Rez’ and think it just rezzed everyone flat out.

they removed being able to use resurrect in spawn though

Personally I have such a love hate relationship with mass rez. It went against core things the game stood for (which is reward good plays with winning, mass rez rewards mistakes with winning) but it also felt exhilarating when you pulled it off. Also was awful to play against.
I can get killed by a pharah ult, or genji ult and think about something I could have done to prevent it or play better, but simply not going into a seperate room where a Mercy is hiding not playing the game to kill her before she rezes everyone is just… Not fun. For anyone. The mercy isnt playing the game. Her team has 1 less healer, making the fight a 5v6, and then enemy team rightfully wins a fight, only to have to win the same fight over again.
Id love mass rez to be in PvE, but PvP I really dont feel like it belongs.

luckily this play style was as rare as getting a 4 man every game

I get that it didn’t always revive an entire team but what is the point of this thread? It shouldn’t come back and I feel like you know that as well deep down, let’s just move on.

the most fun part about mass res was killing the whole team again after she resed them

Rare? It was literally in every game and was the reason for the axing of the mas rezz to begin with.

no not really, it was removed because it was a hated play style plus lower ranks hated it because they couldn’t use the “dump all ultimates and win” mindset anymore
and it wasn’t in every game, it wasn’t even that common. stop over exaggerating

Calling it mass res implies it was capable of resurrecting multiple people.
It did
So imma keep calling it mass res.

Makes me wonder what the point is of not calling it what it was. It was a mass resurrection of more than one person.

What low ranks? It was used just the same even in OWL.
Also idk if you have figured out by now but blizzard doesn’t balance around low elo.
And yes it was common. I had it in my games and I have seen ppl having it in their games and ppl complaining about it too.
It is gone and for good.

The point? The point is an attempt to downplay the negative feelings towards mass res by making it seem “not as bad” as it really was, while simultaneously making mass rez seem more difficult and complicated to use than it actually was to make the ability seem more “appropriately rewarding” than it was, in an attempt to make mass res seem like a more suitable ability for the game than it was.
This same colorful vernacular and dramatically exaggerated complication of use could be used to make tying your shoes seem like an overly complex procedure.

In personal experience, mass rezz was never as complex as it’s made out to be. Especially with the little trick of doing it behind a wall.
Mercy, as of right now, is one of my most played heroes, and has been my most played back when it existed. I just don’t get the obsession with that one ability.

I dunno Silwatsi, the current average for rezzes in a game sits a little over 6 (with rez on E).
When Mass Rez was around I could easily double or almost triple that number, with my personal best being 19 resurrects in a game. If that’s not “Mass” I’m not sure what counts.
I think they named it for its potential, which it had. It could resurrect in mass.
