Marvel, the Rivals, Over the Watch

It has been not even twenty four hours since the release of Marvel Rivals, and already many news outlets and forum users are jumping the gun with the most extreme takes from “Overwatch is dead! Murdered!” To “This game sucks dingdongs”.

Now granted, on an Overwatch forum it is no surprise that Overwatch players will want to defend their honor and glory against a game that for all intents and purposes looks the same from a distance. But it is surprising just how many forumers here are defending OW versus MR, given how… Everyone seems to hate the game we play anyway.

But my take on it is far more simple.

They’re both pretty good.

MR is a brand new game that has a bunch of bugs and some crappy things going for it. Personally, I kinda like the TPS style. Reminds me a little bit of Borderlands or Halo. I know it’s nothing like these, but that’s the first impression I got.

It’s a new game - even though they had beta testing - so of course it’s going to be the hot new thing. And of course people are going to rip it apart. And of course you’re going to lose games. Because you suck. I suck, too. If you haven’t been playing since the beta, you probably suck. And that’s fine.

And the characters: a lot of people are simply saying that most characters are just “Overwatch but ”. And I think that’s taking away from what’s actually the case. Sure, some heroes are definitely like this - Hawkeye feels just like Handbow - but overall, they’re different. Punisher isn’t just Soldaboy. Soldaboy can run, and can only use one gun, and has a helix rocket. Punisher cannot run, has two guns, a Zipline, a turret, and a smoke grenade that pushes him back.

Sure, a lot of things feel like Overwatch, but I think that’s because it’s both trying to be like it (quite obviously from how they did game modes and whatnot) and because a lot of people who are playing it are from Overwatch. therefore, we will paste our own experiences onto it. I personally play some Apex Legends, and I liken Punisher’s Zipline to Pathfinder’s ultimate. I also liken the odd number of “you’re mine” abilities to Hog’s Hook, because they do the same thing.

Hell, I wouldn’t even liken Black Widow to Widowmaker all that much. Beyond using a sniper rifle with a kind of charge or choke mechanic and having a mobility option, they’re not similar. And how those are executed are difficult as well. Widowmaker has a grapple and a charge count on her rifle, BW has a “click” charge and can run and jump. Their Ults are also nothing alike, so beyond “sexy sniper woman” there isn’t much to draw 1:1 comparison.

I do think a lot of the hate is absolutely overblown. But I also don’t think this game is going to kill Overwatch. I think it’s a pretty decent game, that if it played more to its own strengths - which it might - could easily become a staple of the genre. If they stopped trying to emulate Overwatch in some ways, they’d easily have a really great game, instead of a pretty decent one.

Also, I’m no longer going to mald about how Rocket is a support. He’s fun to play… God… I love throwing down my Rez machine…

Yeah, gaming “journalists” rely on capitalizing on hype for a living, so they’re always going to push reactionary, extreme takes on day 1. We’ll have a better idea of how both games are doing in about 6 months. Day 1 hype doesn’t mean much.

I’m enjoying my time on the game so far. Feels fun to play, heroes feel unique enough to where it doesn’t feel like I’m just playing overwatch 3.

Haven’t had any lag or major performance issues.

Game is good, idk what to tell yall. I swear people got on the game expecting it to be an overwatch replacement. It isn’t.

It’s two very different games lol.

I also haven’t been having performance issue, outside of some stuttering in the loading screens when getting into games. Which could be attributed to the sheer amount of people flooding the servers, or my Xbox loading the visually impressive maps. It runs almost smooth as silk on a Series X.

I didn’t really care for it but that’s also fine. There are 7.5 billion people I think we can handle more than one popular game at a time on the planet lol. Queue times on both were completely fine last night.

Y’know what? That’s cool. Different strokes for different folks. I was playing OW last night too, before I let everyone in the Discord call decide what to name my MR acct. Had fun. Honestly the one great thing about a new game is making a new tag…

Let’s play some tonight. Anyone else on Xbox, would love to play some time.

Hell yeah. Just message me when you’re getting on, I might be there. I have work tonight at 1700, but if y’all are on before that or after 2330, I’ll definitely be on.

It’s… It’s over guys… As soon as I installed MR in my SSD, it instantly deleted OW. I tried download it again but police knocked on my door and said I can only play a single game.

They are definitely not just overwatch but they do take some of the stuff a little liberally. Like one of the issues I have is the heros I want to play in MR don’t feel like the actual heroes instead they feel changed to fit into a game. Which I mean I understand is what has to happen. If you had the real super hero powers you would break stuff especially balance, but to me that’s the whole point of pretending to be a famous already known super hero, I want to do what they do, not what they do in a fair and balanced pvp setting. So to me that’s a bit of a downside, I don’t get much utility from it being marvel because of that. I think probably lots of people don’t care that their hero doesn’t do what they want but I personally do.

I think people calling it anything other than a fun marvel game and getting too deep into the whole thing are a little off their nut. It’s not that deep. I’ll probably play it some more with friends it wasn’t something I hated just not really my thing. Which is fine and I really hope the people looking forward to it have a lot of fun, I don’t understand why people want to have ill will toward each other about it. It’s a hobby it’s meant to be fun and enjoyable I think a lot of people completely lost the focus of that.

The Gamer Police have me on the run too, Dargaron… We’re so cooked… Fried, even… They started beating me with nightsticks when they realize I don’t even play just two games…

I play…

So much more than that, I honestly have no clue how many I own

And only four of these are online games… They tried to take my Singleplayer games too… And now I’m on the run, Dargaron

I’m sure glad they didn’t search my steam library. I’ve certainly spent more money on it that I’d like (granted it’s mostly from indie devs). I’d not have gotten away with a warning, that’s for certain. I’d be put in jail and forced to farm battlepasses to win my freedom back… nightmarish…

Actually that’s the first take I’ve seen about it like that. Where you want to do the feats that are in the comics in pvp, and that’s what’s disappointing about it.

Personally? I uh… May or may not own the Insomniac Spiderman trilogy, and definitely have no plans to buy the Wolverine game (wink) and I think that’s kinda my hero fantasy fix for it.

But I do get where you’re coming from. You wanna be able to solo God because the character did it in the comics, but because it’s a videogame that requires some form of balance, you can’t. It is frustrating in retrospect, even if only severely mildly. Like an ant.

At the moment, I’m having a lot of fun with MR. I see people talking about performance issues, I didn’t have any. The game runs smooth as butter.

Also, it’s different from OW2, so I don’t think its existence will impact OW2’s player base more than the devs bad decisions.

Let’s see what happens in the next few months. Honestly, I think MR has a lot of potential. It’s just fun and not as frustrating as OW2.

I think it only happens without SSD, cause I was stuck in loading screens that goes often a minute plus. So a lot of the games, I start with teams already playing way ahead.

They need to fix it fast, cause it’s really killing the vibes.

Not really. Many Overwatch skills are translating over very well such as positioning and target priority. I feel I have an advantage because of my Overwatch play time, like understanding compositions and how building a team works. It’s not that different to me personally.

Or maybe they are both bad. :hugs:

That’s pretty much what all journalism is devolving into these days. There’s just SO MUCH media out there that they have to work overtime and use hyperbole to get anyone to pay attention.

Yeah I think just for me personally pvp breaks the super hero fantasy a little, but it has to. With ow you don’t have that baggage really because they are their heroes. I mean I understand it’s the way it needs to be it would be so much worse if it wasn’t lol. But I’m not gonna fault anyone for enjoying it, that would just be silly. I don’t get why people here have to get so deep into it lol.
