Map editor and creation of custom maps?

Wouldn’t it make sense for Blizz to release a map editor for OW?
Not just modify scale, translate and rotate items on existing maps, but actually let us create maps with current catalogue of assets + custom assets created in a 3d package. Aka a devkit.

Community created maps are way more attractive to me rather than cliché hot potato workshop mods in already existing ow maps.

Have a playcard in arcade with most popular community maps and badabig badabom you attract more players.

This is pretty much the reason I play tf2 and csgo these days, for the community content.

It’s time consuming, that’s the reason they probably don’t do it, but after ow2 release (this includes PvE) I see no reason to not develop it

Games like Unreal Tournament and Quake and games that used the same engines like Star Trek Voyager Elite Force all had a lot of custom creation tools and content for decades. Not sure why games like OW don’t do the same thing. I know arena shooters aren’t exactly the same thing, but OW clearly has a ton of potential for custom maps.

Maybe there’s copyright concerns or something if someone makes a super popular new game mode (similar to WC3 custom map editor being the origin of “MOBAs.”)

Blizz altered their EULA after they lost big on DOTA. Any custom creations are now the property of Blizz…

I’ve actually been thinking about this too. It would be a lovely addition, but it would 100% have to be added after release. Because it would be SOOOO time consuming

This. They are super salty that they didn’t get the rights to DOTA so their games are now heavily locked down.

It’s hilarious but I can totally understand the oversight on Blizz’s behalf.

It was an innocent custom game mode maker, no-one envisioned DOTA would be made from it…

…but yeah, they learned their lesson…

Despite the long history of the DOTA / DOTA II legality (which I will not get into), user creative content is still a thing for Blizzard games, notably with StarCraft II.

That being said, a Map Editor for Overwatch or Overwatch 2 is not likely to be a thing anytime soon still. This is because Overwatch runs a unique game engine and they don’t have the means to translate their map building assets into a user-friendly interface yet. A Map Editor has been requested many times and the developers would like to one day consider it but it is not on their radar to my knowledge at this time.

Dude I just want anything new for custom games, excluding the new browser (which is awesome) there hasn’t been any new workshop things or anything for a year

Would be amazing, but it will probably not happen atleast in the near future.
