Mandatory Mobile Phone link? You're joking

Linking mobile phone numbers to accounts? Blizzard have got to be kidding.

Blizzard has spent the better part of the last decade making bad decision after bad decision, what with the sad excuse for a workplace culture we’ve been hearing about, Diablo Phone version, the Overwatch League in it’s entirety, etc. but I’ve stuck around.

I’ve been buying and playing Blizzard games back since the days of StarCraft and Brood War, across multiple accounts, and in this modern world of data harvesting, micro-transactions and pay-to-win, I always came back to Blizzard because they at least had ethics.

Now, we get a mandatory mobile phone requirement to play their game.

Marketed as a way to stop cheats and smurfs (as though Blizzard wasn’t making a profit of the multiple accounts), I’ve gotta say, I believe it’s just plain old data harvesting, and it’s vile.

There’s an easy way to stop the cheats and smurfs; report, review the game footage, refund the lost SR. Players can do it themselves if given the rights, a group of volunteers to review footage in exchange for Priority Pass credits or bonus skins or something.

Instead, Blizzard has decided to do what is easy rather than what is right, and finally taken a massive overstep across the line, ensuring that I won’t be buying their games again, just like Bethesda and their Kernel level anti-cheat, this is a MASSIVE overstep.

And I just want to say I am utterly disgusted by Blizzard.

It’s so they can sell your number

Does it have to be a smart phone? I have an old brick type phone, hope it works.

I suspect so. Data harvesting is perverse. You wouldn’t let people rummage through your letter box, most people won’t let their spouse look through their phones.

Why would anyone let a faceless corporate monster dig through and sell what they find?

im sure it’ll just be for comp when the full game launches. I dont see them enforcing sms for arcade, custom, or quick play. There’s a big chunk of players that won’t bother with the game at that point.

on one hand sounds great against alt accounts and cheaters. on the other yea some people cant afford a mobile phone or dont have one for reasons…

wonder whats gonna happen. also with free to play they want to attract newcomers to the game. especially young people who dont have money, but will these young people have PHONES??? heh

also is this the first time an online competitive game has done that? does any other game require a mobile phone to play??

Whatever makes you feel better. Ill give them my number and not care. Less cheaters in competive is good. Moving on. See ya.

Its a counter measure for smurf accounts.

Just buy a burner phone for $20 if you’re going to whine about it.

When we first saw this I thought for sure there would be exceptions like OW1 owners would be exempt since it would be crazy to block existing players who have already been playing who are also paying customers.

The fact that they’ve completely ignored this issue and haven’t commented on it at all yet (that I’ve seen) is kind of worrying. That either means they’re discussing it internally and haven’t come to a decision yet, or they don’t want to talk about it because it’s bad news and they don’t want to highlight bad news.

no its so they can call you to talk about cute boys

If they add an alternative I might stick around (assuming the alternative isn’t worse). If a mobile number stays as the only tool for this then yeah, I’m out.

Would you really call that living though?

No.

I really don’t care what Blizzard does with my phone number as long as it prevents smurfs and cheaters.

Unfortunatly, it’s not enough to stop smurfs ans cheaters. As you said, there’s multiple accounts that doesn’t stop them…
A phone is a good solution but to be better, a PC material ban (or console reference ban) is better

Lol, you mean get hacked/have hackers sell your #? Because this is what will happen.

This is a pc misconception because on console smurfing is free. I have 7 accounts on psn.
