It does look like that. And the main reason i don’t play rocket league… Lucio ball is that bad, i know I’ve heard rocket league is way way better. But Lucio ball has left that sour of a taste
I don’t think it’s a secret. They obviously took heavy inspiration from Rocket League. They’re not trying to copy the game or improve upon it, though. It’s more like an homage.

What i’ve played more than +200hours it I can say its way more intresting to play & that you should give it a try tbh.
