Low fps NOT 100% gpu/cpu usage

980ti (Overclocked a good amount)
i7 4790k (Overclocked to 4.4ghz)
16gb ram

I get around 180fps average on all low settings on my 240hz 1920x1080p monitor. My average gpu and cpu usage are around 60% and they both have low temps while running the game. I have tried lots of things to boost my performance to get at least 240fps but nothing has worked.

Shot in the dark. Have you tried setting Windows Power Settings to Performance? I had an issue like yours while playing WoW. Turned out the Power Settings were throttling my GPU/CPU.

Yes I’ve tried high performance and currently use a custom plan and there was no difference

what is the speed and configuration of your ram (meaning 2 sticks in duel channel or 4 sticks in duel channel or 1 stick in single channel etc)?
You can check this using a program called CPU-Z, get it here https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html
once loaded click memory tab at the top and what is “Channel #” say and what number is reporting at “DRAM Frequency”?

Some other quick things to do, set power settings in windows to high performance, set battle net app to close when game launches, close all background apps and services by default https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/23848, turn off game mode and game dvr, turn off overlays such as discord overlay if you have any, and run the game in fullscreen mode.

2 channel 799.99hz (I have 2 1600hz sticks and it says that in bios too idk why the program shows 800hz)

I tried all those other changes and there was no difference still sitting around 180fps with low usage :frowning:

Is it possible the GPU isn’t set to high performance in the NVidia settings?

Does the FPS decrease if you turn up the settings? If it stays the same at higher settings and lower settings than it is being throttled somehow. If it changes, then I dunno.

it shows 800 because it is duel channel speeds and you only see one channel speed and that is why its important to have duel channel do you can get that 1600Mhz speed instead of 800. that being said this might be limitations of your ram as it could have high latency.
OR it could be your gpu, try turning off dynamic reflections and fog detail in game (set to low if fog, there is no off) and maybe test the bottom two lighting settings and see how your fps goes.

That isn’t the issue it’s already on high performance. Playing on higher settings lowers my fps and increases my gpu usage but cpu/gpu still don’t change on low.

I am already on the lowest settings while playing to try to get high fps. Task manager says my memory doesn’t go super high I don’t exactly know how it could be a ram issue? Do I need higher mhz ram or just more?

The same thing has been happening to me since the latest update so I think something’s going on and or also are you using Xfinity or Verizon FiOS if you’re in America cuz I think it might be a FiOS thing cuz a couple other people that I was talking to you were having lagging issues seem to be on FiOS

I have xfinity internet so probably not that. This has been an issue for awhile it might have gone slightly lower after this update idk.

it may not be a ram issue at all but ram does have a large impact on overwatch top end fps. You want as fast as possible at the lowest latency possible, 16gigs more then enough. Its a terrible suggestion right now due to the super high prices. Otherwise you can check my old post, it may have something to help you out https://us.battle.net/forums/en/overwatch/topic/20760977654#post-3 that wont cost you anything other than time effort.

You’re sure you’re not limiting fps in game settings?

I have decided to get liquid cooling for my cpu to overclock higher with lower temps. When in-game I don’t overheat but in stress tests I get to the point of thermal throttling so I think the pc uses less to keep the temps down when playing games. I am getting the corsair 115i pro which should bring them down a lot.

I’m 100% sure that isn’t the issue. Whenever I start the game I got to 300 limit to see if anything has changed then I find where my average is for consistency and put it to that (189 or 199 normally).

Man it shows 800 Mhz because it’s DDR RAM , you may have a look how RAM works maybe before trying to say that. Dual, TRiple or Quad channels a multiplying the bandwith ie the numbers of wires between the proc and the ram.

So his ram is running 1600Mhz

I have the same issue, and many people have the same issue. I am trying to figure it out but it seems that for overwatch the RAM is a huge bottel neck at very high fps. I run myself 1600Mhz RAM and cant have 250+ stable

Pff I have spend now 3 days on this topic, I have time to lose. But look, since more than a year reddit and this forum is under heavy loads of complain from users having huge difficulty making work OW. Most of the people are like you and me, they had better performance before, rigs are running last videogames smooth for everyone but one, overwatch.

It’s so bad that there is no answer at all over internet. Noone found a good explanation but “this game is actually trash”.

Not a representative or any spokeperson, any patch adressed or mentioned the issue while it’s real, it’s there, the game simply doesnt work properly, like a alpha version of a game not yet optimized. LOL
All those people said they would have quit the game because of this.
I am about to the same ! I am trying a bit more, but if can’t find a fix so I will another fast paced fps to play with a growing community.

You’re forgetting your motherboard plays a factor in your ram speed. Your single stick of ram is only going to use single channel bandwidth on your duel channel motherboard. If you want to take full advantage of your rams speed you will need to run at your motherboards spec and most cpu’s and motherboards at this price range use a duel channel configuration. Thus he isnt getting the full speed from his ram since it is not taking advantage of the total bandwidth.

Yes ram speeds plays a pretty big factor in fps for… Yes there is a unconfirmed issue that hits performance normally after a patch and yes windows 10 is not having with its terrible forced updates. Dont get me wrong, i am not saying the issue is just a ram issue and it will fix everything because it wont. I am just giving people ideas how increase performance for there game that has worked for me and others since blizzard has not be able to find the root cause of these issues.

I have an old list of things that has worked for some people, its on the old forums but you can still get to it. Maybe something in that list might help you: https://us.battle.net/forums/en/overwatch/topic/20760977654#post-3
