EDIT: I am using the mic from the Logitech c920 webcam as my dedicated mic broke.
I am considering switching over from press-to-talk to open mic and using the mute button in between engagements instead of using a button that I would need to press and hold at different intervals depending on the level of communication required at any given time.
Is there a certain software or volume settings that you have found that accomplishes this goal? For the record I use a mechanical keyboard so it’s easier for the clicks to transmit through the mic. I have read that there’s a program called Voicemeeter that can adjust the amount of background noise coming through. Has anyone else used this who can attest to its effectiveness?
I’ve never used that program, but I turned the Gain on my mic down quite a bit and it helped reduce how much background noise it was pulling in.

there is a program for mics that use the straight audio jack plugs that adds something called noise reduction or a noise gate. Noise reduction reduces the sound of smaller sounds and a noise gate just blocks smaller sounds. It’s called Realtek HD Audio Manager. It’s difficult to set up and sadly I found out after I figured it all out it doesn’t work for USB mics like mine XD
I put a noise gate on my mic, that or you can adjust your sensitivity until it picks up your voice but not your typing
I actually switched from open mic to push to talk because people could hear my breathing. I want to switch back because I rarely talk now (push to talk is a pain mid-fight), but I hate to be the annoying guy on the open mic.

Upgrade to an electric, flat keyboard. It is more responsive and requires shorter keystrokes. Plus all 9f that frakn sound will gone
Good mic, quiet keyboard.
You will need to play around with the sensitivity for open mic. The less sensitive, the less it will detect every little noise to be transmitted.
I remember when people used to tell me “dude, you sound like a mouthbreather” LMAO! It was just my nose exhaling but the sound was of an ogre breathing out its mouth HAHA!

I turn the mic voice input volume down to around half. Plus I don’t like mech keyboard and the whole clickity click feel of them. I use a $50 membrane keyboard which feels perfect for me and doesn’t make much noise either. I often hear team mates with open mics who have mech keyboards and I can hear their clicks very audibly, so I just politely ask them if they can turn their mic sensitivity down a bit. It’s never happened where the audible clicks have been so loud and annoying and the player refused to do anything and ended up muted, every time people have been accommodating.
Gain control, I have a physical knob on my external mic interface. Fwiw I use MX blue switches BECAUSE THE EPIC CLACKING IS GOOD FOR MORALE and haven’t found the need for a noise gate.

That’s a program that is part of the sound driver package for onboard Realtek sound. It won’t work for people who don’t have onboard Realtek sound.
OP: You can adjust mic sensitivity in whatever program is downloaded with your audio driver package. You might have to mess around looking for the right settings, but they do exist.
Just move your mic further away from your mouth to fix that.
The vast majority of the time, they don’t. It’s why I mute and block about 2 or 3 people at the start of every match. They don’t care about being polite to everyone else on their team, I don’t care to hear anything from them. It’s basic courtesy.
You can open mic with very well tuned settings and repeated testing. Most can’t be bothered though.
There are times where I’ve accidentally left my speakers on because I was watching television, and don’t realize for a couple minutes that my game sounds are transmitting through my mic. As soon as I do, I shut it off though.
Whenever I can hear breathing or game sounds I just politely say “Hey xx, can you turn your speakers down or off? They’re transmitting your gamesounds through your mic and we can all hear it.”
Most of the time people don’t realize their mic is annoying others. The breather’s I just say “Hey can you move your mic a little further from your mouth?”
I have never ever had anyone respond negatively. They usually just do as I ask and then apologize. You might try that before auto muting someone who might very well be willing to fix the problem quickly.

When it’s happening almost every match, you just at some point cut your losses and decide that comms aren’t even worth it anymore. I just leave it turned off now and leave text channels at the beginning of every play session. I wish Blizzard would save the text settings.
Inconsiderate people ruined it already. Not worth fixing.
Just use M to mute the mic and hit it again when you need to speak. I found that to be much easier than push to talk.
I always had the problem of all voicelines i hear going thru the mic, but nothing else. I could mute my sound, but voice lines will still be heard by the team. I had to use push-to-talk instead.
I don’t mind keyboard clicks, but annoying when someone has all sound coming thru mic
Thanks for all the helpful replies!
You might want a mic with a cushion/sponge filter for it.
I personally prefer PTT due to family karaoke and making a lot of noise in the background often (,whenever I use voice chat). I have my PTT bind to my wheel tilt, so all I have to do is tilt it to the right and it will not get too much in the way of me shooting.
