Hey guys. It’s been quite awhile since I hopped onto the forums. I just wanted to talk about something that’s been bothering me lately, just to vent a bit. I’m sure it’s going to get locked or tossed into the trash by mods, but please hear me out.
I like the loot boxes. But, something hasn’t been right with them lately. I swear to god that I got way more legendaries before, especially during events, and it didn’t even take that much time or effort. Blizzard, are you tampering with the drop rates? The only skin I got from the Retribution event is Winston’s, and no offense to the art team but it’s the ugliest of the new skins. Every other skin is wonderful and amazing. Well, it looks like I’ll never get them, at least not until next year. Do I just have bad luck? Well, it seems extremely suspicious that I keep getting 3 whites, 1 blue. It’s a very obvious pattern, and it looks like there’s a pity timer thing in place too. I appreciate that, but it makes me feel weird. If I play your game for hours, I deserve a reward for that. Your game is already so fun and fantastic, but it’s very discouraging when I hop into your game… buy 2 loot boxes since the event is almost over… and get nothing good. Like the last 15 or so boxes. Although I did get Zarya’s new highlight intro, Orisa’s victory stance with the puppy, and a few others like those. I swear on my entire being that I’ve gotten legendaries way more frequently before, it can’t just be my imagination, it can’t just be RNG or luck. And, yeah. Skins aren’t important. I honestly don’t really need them all. I’m not saying I want them all, I just wish I got more and didn’t have this bad luck, if it is just bad luck.
Look, I understand that simply unlocking skins by leveling up is sort of boring. It’s not as exciting as random loot, like in an ARPG. But when you make skins limited time, especially for someone like me who enjoys collecting them and having a variety of skins to swap between, this is sort of cruel. While I’m at it, I saw a video of someone criticizing you for taking OUT the co-op modes. It’s time to stop being insecure, because I know why you won’t leave them in. You’re worried people will demand unique rewards from them due to playing them a lot. Well, you are inherently reducing the value of your game by removing the co-op modes. There, I said it. I do enjoy the co-op modes, and I also love the PvP modes. I like them all. But this is just mean, the way you remove the co-op modes.
I wish you would stop doing these bad business practices. Your game isn’t free to play, you shouldn’t do this for much longer. You will get in trouble, because the public is already becoming more aware of loot boxes and their predatory nature. You are a company who already earns so much money from a variety of sources, that you don’t need the loot box transaction money. Impliment a better system, or make it so you can earn a steady rate of currency from matches. Stop worrying about what will happen if people don’t have anything left to unlock, maybe make it give bonus XP instead? I enjoy getting those portrait frames, but the different colored ones take so long to get. I’d like to get bonus XP, if I ever end up 100%'ing all unlocks. Just make a ton of new portrait frames, maybe even prestige frames after getting to the “max” level. If you are worried about people getting everything and getting discouraged to play, then maybe evaluate if the game is fun enough on its own to keep people playing without unlocks?
There, that’s my rant. Overwatch is an awesome game, but it’s reward system is very discouraging. I’m not going to discredit the art team for their hard work on the sprays, or the hard work put into voicelines. There’s a lot of voicelines I really like and use. Heck, I really like victory poses and highlight intros too. But customization is always a very fun thing, and a basic feature in games of the past. Some of these new skins are wonderful, and I haven’t gotten any of the ones I want… while in the past, I more easily got the skins I wanted. I’m not sure what’s going on. Bad luck, perhaps? Yeah, it has to be bad luck… but, Blizzard, I’m keeping my eyes on you. This is tremendously suspicious. I’m noticing a pattern.
P.S. Yes, I know that I’m already a victim of these “predatory” loot boxes, by virtue of spending $10.00 of my planned loot box budget on them.
