For someone like me who is generally unlucky I’d rather spend hours grinding something I know I’m going to get than spend hours grinding for something to have A CHANCE to get it. Battle pass systems are just inherently better. y’all only disagree cause a hero is in it. Which all you get for free anyways for owing ow1 the only issue is farmable currency. But to say a pass system is worse than a lootbox rng slot machine system is straight disillusionment.
I found it really nice that they were quite generous with both the loot boxes from playing the game, and the currency you would get from duplicates or straight coin drops in the loot boxes. Personally i never had a problem where i didnt have enough coins to get whatever new event skin i wanted. Now im being much more directly forced to pay rather than play to earn content
Sorry but i actually care about overwatch for the gameplay and not playing dressup
The one thing that loot boxes had going for them was that they weren’t constantly being slapped in your face. You could safely ignore them and you could go about doing your thing.
The battle pass is in your face. “Almost inside your skull” kind of in your face. Like if Navi from OoT constantly pestered you to make a purchase. “Hey! Listen! Buy a skin, buy an emote, BUY!! HEY!! BUY!! BUY!! HEY!!”
Even if you were unlucky, you still got coins to buy what you wanted. For free.
Used to be you had a decent chance at a legendary per box. Now it takes months of grinding to get that same legendary. Lol.
Then why are you here I enjoy the gameplay as well can you actually play or are you one of the 40k players waiting
They’re not better or worse. Like so many things in life, it depends how it’s implemented. The way they implemented bps in OW2 is straight up god awful.
im at work right now on 5 hours sleep from playing all night haha. I told someone my secret trick to skip the q today and they liked my post so im guessing they got in
5 levels in OW1 got you 5 boxes, they could range from cool stuff to basic and repeats. Even in the case of getting repeats you got currency that could later be used however you wanted.
5 levels in OW2 gets you a voice line.
I would MUCH rather have a bunch of random chances to get things +coins I could use to buy it anyway if I don’t get it. Than this system of only being able to buy even the smallest thing every few weeks.
How delusional. I literally had every single cosmetic unlocked with over 125000 coins and nothing to spend them on, without having to waste an extra penny.
Now I can’t get anything unless I fork out some cash and even then I have to literally grind a Battle Pass level to unlock cosmetics, basically treating it like a chore rather than something I passively obtained just through playing.
LOOTBOXES
- You were always guaranteed an item you didn’t have depending on the category of and rarity of the drop
 - You would obtain them simply by playing the game and not worrying about arbitrary progression system
 - You were able to obtain all event cosmetics without spending a dime
 - Any duplicates would convert to in-game currency to be spent on cosmetics to be instantly unlocked

BATTLEPASS
- You have to buy it as 99% of cosmetics are locked
 - You have to play for a long time to level it up
 - You have to do daily, weekly and seasonal quests to level it up
 - You can only gain cosmetics by achieving a certain level of a battle pass

You’re barking up the wrong tree, I saw same nature discussions about Diablo Immortal and yet . . Still ongoing.
I guarantee that after I play OW2 for the same amount of time I played OW1 I will have roughly 10% of the legendary skins I got in the first game.
Battlepass is only better if you want to pay a soft subscription in OW.
For me it has to do with the fact that the whole loot box system is just outdated. The formula was cool when it started with CSGO but that was like 8 years ago, so it’s to the point now where I just don’t even open them. So a battle pass is exactly what I’m looking for ![]()
Just look at how much you have to grind for overwatch coins. Can only earn 60 a week and skins cost 1900, so 8 months to get a single skin . In ow1 I could probably get 80 skins in 8 months
Also you have to grind out those challenges EVERY week for 8 months and you’ll need to make sure you get 20 WINS every week, so you probably need to play around 100 games every month
I was very skeptical of lootboxes at first in OW1. I played since 2016, I was wrong.
Lootboxes in OW1 were extremely fair. Unlike the current Battle pass it was cosmetic only. It really did not take long at all to build up enough currency to buy whatever you wanted. I had plenty of gold to get any event skin I liked. Plus you always had the chance that you got it for free and saved yourself 3000 coins. If not you buy it the last day.
I don’t understand how anyone could look at the implementation of OW1’s lootboxes and OW2’s Battlepass and say the battlepass is superior.
Even with OW1’s rng you were getting items you wanted way faster then OW2.
I promise you it did not take 8 months to get a legendary skin in OW1. But if you really want to keep licking Blizzards boot more power to you I guess.
Nah. Loot boxes suck but at least they’re free. I don’t know about others but I’m not paying 16 quid for a skin
Well said.
It’s insane to me how these people are intentionally completely oblivious to how things were and how good it was for everyone, before this free-to-play trash came into play.
It was fair and consistent for everyone and most importantly was passively rewarded just for playing.
I’m as anti loot box as anybody, but I would implore you to look into the numbers and costs involved in the new system. It costs 12K USD to get all our old overwatch 1 skins in the current system on a new account. The old system, while predatory, handed out loot boxes at a steady rate that made it possible to get skins at reasonable rate. The new system will take months and months of grinding to get a SINGLE legendary skin. It’s beyond crazy to say the new system is better unless you’re clueless or a blizz shill.
Well I have to disagree here. Battle pass is an absolute joke, especially if you don’t want to pay for premium. I was actually enjoying the loot boxes, but even more - levels. I’m a player who likes to have this completely pointless marker showing me how much exp I received - I like collecting it although I know it doesn’t change the gameplay itself. The game now feels very bland in between, especially if you’re not excited for the BP rewards.
