Lofty idea - improved tutorial

Hey Folks,

I wrote some low hanging ideas - here are the lofty idea. Last lofty idea I had was queues based on roles way back in 2017.

  1. Mini games / skill challenge to improve the knowledge required to play a role and counter picks. This can help mechanics and general knowledge.
    a. Help matchmaker match you with people who completed the mini games are similar levels. (you play main tank, and your skill challenge is level 3 - all your healers / dps / have their skill challenge at level +/- 1 level) - of course if queue time is long the +/- varies.
  • SR grouping is great, but sometimes you still wonder how someone got to where they are - even if it is silver. Now you know they passed a skill challenge.
  • Its a great way to kill time and learn skills devs think you need to succeed.

I personally loved madden mini games when you build a character, that is where the inspiration is coming from.

I’m not a fan of the skill challenge impacting the matchmaker, since there’s no guarantee that the players have taken the lessons to heart and implemented 'em into their gameplay (look into how people consume self-help content without actually doing anything beyond taking part of the content, while still feeling good bout themselves. It can be the same with tutorials).

But other than that I’d LOVE if there were more tutorials in this games. I really liked when fighting games started to throw in compelling tutorials that explained both game specific mechanics, but also concepts that’ve been standard in fighting games since Street Fighter 2 (I think Blazblue and KoF13 had cool tutorials like that, while Street Fighter 4 just had some combo practice as a lazy “tutorial”).
But yeah, so much could’ve and should’ve been done, since OW has pulled in such a diverse crowd.

I hear ya on not affecting match maker. The idea is to have more variables to work with than just win / loss previous game and current rank.

Hey lets start SOMEWHERE and just have it. I think with the work shop they proved people like “mini” games. Why not have one dedicated to improving game sense not just mechanics and muscle twitch.

Youtube and twitch. Blizzard could never even begin to come close to all the content/coaching already there and free.

All you have to do is watch it until you understand and then work on applying it. Playing with people who are trying to improve is important. I had to stop playing anything but qp with my original friend group. They helped me at first, but once I got to plat where they were I had to find higher players to learn from.

The game is played worlds apart across the ranks.

but again, the enjoyment of just doing a skills test - it wont cannibalize the other stuff.
