LGBT crowd, you're missing the point

Before I start, note this is coming from a bi person. I’m “one of your own”. I only bring this up to deflect the “you don’t know what its like!” arguments people tend to throw at me.

Most people here aren’t against ‘diversity’ itself as many seem to think. Ask anyone here, chances are the overwhelming majority of them will likely tell you they don’t hate gay people or what have you.

They’re just people who have seen their beloved forms of entertainment nosediving face first into the pandering rabbit hole and coming out as a shell of its former self that’s now more focused on pandering than anything else.

We’re worried about that happening to Overwatch especially.

Now, can you have ‘diversity’ in something? Yes. That’s fine. No one is saying you cannot have it. Time has proven many, many times now you can indeed have “diversity” in something like a game or movie without people feeling its an issue.

When you handle it very poorly in hamfisted, cringey, poorly executed, poorly thought out, blatant over the top pandering ways you’re going to see people memeing the creation into the floor.

But when you handle it well with nuance and care you see virtually no one, if anyone at all ever complaining.

World of Warcraft does it well. Take note my dudes

WoW has TONS of female characters. You can’t walk 2 feet without running into 40 of them. This game easily has some of the most female “representation” I’ve ever seen in gaming and yet you see virtually no one on the WoW forums complaining about it. Why is that?

It’s because the females don’t feel like they’re being used as shameless pandering devices. The WoW team isn’t trying to emphasize the fact that the characters are female or that their game has females. The fact the characters are female aren’t weirdly hyper focused on, it isn’t made into some big point.

They’re focusing exclusively on the character’s actions, their story, and who the character is. Never at any point do they ever feel like they’re pointing to the fact that they’re female and saying “Look! Female representation! Woo females! They exist! Females are indeed a thing! Give us your money!”

Take a gander at this Jaina video the WoW team made. Even if you don’t play WoW its still a good watch

At any point do you get a diversity pandering vibe? I personally don’t.

I just see a awesome character who happens to be female instead of some character who is a “forced” diversity pander. At no point do I feel like they’re trying to sledgehammer some ulterior motive such as diversity pandering down my throat with this character.

Jaina is a insanely powerful female character that doesn’t in any way feel like diversity pander bait because they handled the whole “diversity” thing very well with her and all the other female characters in WoW.

The point being, when you handle this stuff with nuance and care to make sure your character doesn’t feel like a sloppily handled diversity pandering tool you end up with something like World of Warcraft; a game overflowing to the brim with “representation” while doing it in a way that doesn’t make people feel like a pandering agenda is being furiously jammed down their screaming throat.

And that is all we want. We just want this stuff to be handled better. That’s all we ask, its all we ever wanted.

We’re not asking for representation to never be put into Overwatch. We’re not saying “don’t put in gay or bi characters!”. We’re not saying “don’t do diversity!”

We’re simply asking “please, handle this stuff with care and nuance so it doesn’t feel like lazy pandering”.

Focus on the character’s actions, how they deal with their struggles, how they overcome said struggles, the game, the gameplay, the story and the universe this is all set in. Those things should always be the main focus with some diversity on the side if people want it. But never at any point should those things be overshadowed or neglected because of pandering.

That’s all we want. You can have diversity, that’s fine. Go for it. Just please, handle it well.

But the problem is so many companies now days have been taking that simple concept of “doing it well” and tossing it straight out the window which worries a lot of us.

So when ever you see people in LGBT threads saying “why does this stuff even matter? Stop making a big deal about gay heroes” or “can we stop trying to pander” they’re not complaining about diversity or gay characters specifically.

They’re complaining because they’re worried Blizzard is going to turn their beloved game into another poorly handled pandering tool as other TV shows, movies, comic books (RIP Marvel Comics) and other forms of entertainment have fallen victim to.

Next time you see someone in a thread complaining about LGBT this or LGBT that I just ask you take a moment to consider that this very well could be all that they’re worried about.

And if you’re asking for more representation just please make sure to ask Blizzard to do it in a tasteful, well handled way. So far I think they’ve been doing an okay job but we don’t want that to stop being the case.

TL;DR:

I don’t think I could possibly cram this into a TL;DR. So you don’t feel like you wasted your time scrolling have this adorable cat video

I don’t get your argument.

The current state of the game is bad because of bad choices made by developers, not because they “focus” on these kind of stuff.

I mean, it’s not like they waste 90% of their time discussing if a character is LGBTQ and don’t use that time to make the game better.

Also, I don’t see why soldier being gay was “poorly done”. A gay person cannot have his characteristics? Come on.

And I am straight. It doesn’t matter.

This. It was one hint. They talked about it for ONE page. And they didn’t flat out say he was gay. It was hinted at. How much more subtle does it get?

It would’ve been nice if they did that, y’know. Kind of like the archer dude in MKX. But no, Ship Crasher and progressive guy Mikey Chu has to spell it out for us, ruining my SoldierxAna ship/ SoldierxMercy ships. Harumph.

I’m getting the feeling you didn’t read my post.

You don’t have to if you don’t want to, it is a wall of text. But if you read it you’d see I actually feel they did soldier’s reveal in a okay way.

My post is also not saying the game is bad because of diversity. The main crux of my post is the LGBT crowd is misunderstanding why some people are complaining about this stuff. I’m trying to point out to them what it is they’re complaining about exactly.

I got something better:

Fair enough but overwatch lore is the last thing i care about towards this point, i’d rather just read dorohedoro (it’s a manga) or something if i want plot.

I do understand exactly where you’re coming from because i did read marvel comic books in the past but i don’t think it was necessarily handled poorly.

I’m indifferent on the reveal, it was what it was, it wasn’t poor and it wasn’t excellent.

So what would you suggest they made for announcing soldier as gay?

Seriously, if people get offended by a PHOTO of two hugging man, there’s no other way to put it.

i thought the bastet short story was written well. your opinion is it was forced. well, you do you.

It was 10X better than the Halloween and Christmas comics

Agreed but i’m comparing it to actual story media that i’ve read outside of overwatch, it was just average.

I feel as if most of the community loves the reveal only due to the fact that gay men who are not side characters, comic relief, or fall under a stereotype are so far and few that we will literally take anything at this point.

blizzard introduced their second gay character and suddenly their pandering.

You do know that some people are homophobic right? no matter how “well they do it” gay people existing at all is going to be a problem for them no matter what. people are saying they can’t play soldier 76 anymore because he’s gay and that’ll happen no matter how well they try to make it.

Thats not how it works. people are gonna complain that having gay characters at all is “pandering” and some people are saying that they shouldn’t annonce anyone as gay because that might make people uncomfortable.

actually thats what ALOT of people are saying.

The problem is people arent talking about it like it’s “done poorly” or worried about “misrepresentation”

People are literally being blatantly homophobic, making posts about how they’re “quitting overwatch because soldier is gay” and straight up saying that it’s an abomination to be gay. If you were there in the first 30 minutes of the reveal on the forums, you would have seen the spew of hatred as people crawled out of the woodworks to do potshots towards the LGBTQ community

If it was actually done in poor taste, or it was actually forced, or the whole comic was just to show Solider making out with a dude, yes. It would be pandering and poor story telling. But it wasn’t.

People are getting their panties in a twist about a picture and a passing sentence.

You mean the same Warcraft where people are saying “y are all the badasses girl and all the guys are running around like their handbag”

One of them is some dead witch woman that can raise the dead, ones a super powerful mage that can summon a ghost ship, one of them is a super powerful something that can summon some massive ghost T. rex and some other chick just got powered up by the moon and killed a whole zones worth of people

Then the guys ones is a brad Pitt look alike who is about as useful as a cabbage one is a traitor that hasn’t done anything cool but managed to throw an axe at another dude who got KO’d for all the good stuff

So your point is that a hero that is gay is bad and a gay hero is totaly fine? No its not, making a hero from zero just to be a token gay hero is poor design. Also how could you know if Soldier wasnt gay all along in Blizzard’s plans?

People are saying stuff like “i can’t play soldier 76 anymore because he’s gay” you can’t say its an issue with how they;re represented it because no matter what as long as soldier is gay people will complain.

Yeah pretty much. It’ll blow over soon enough though, just like when the Tracer is a lesbian reveal happened. (Though honestly speaking I feel like in any media, lesbians seem to be far more accepted than gay men are and I genuinely don’t understand why?)

I honestly don’t even understand that mentality though. Guess they’re not gonna be playing 2/29 characters on the roster because they aren’t heterosexual :man_shrugging: like wow what a blow to blizzard am I right

I understand what you mean and of course handling this well is important. These concerns are legitimate

But sadly these concerns are mixed and jumbled with others that don’t share this concern and are just being downright hateful, or misinformed.

I have a legitimate theory on this… but instead, I’ll just say it’s cuz gamer dudes and lesbians both like chicks, so they got some common ground
