Let's Talk Toxic Language

Specific words are not allowed, in OverWatch. No matter the context. Which is understandable. It leaves the door open to lawyer about it. But, there’s something Blizzard is lacking. That they need to do.

The term “gg ez” or “gg ez”, I forget which way it’s worded, is auto reworded, in game. But, racist words are not. Blizzard has shown they’re more than capable of auto silencing specific words, or even phrases.

The fact that Blizzard doesn’t auto silence at least racist words, while auto silencingthe ez gg term, is proof Blizzard is not against racism. Only where it’s publicly viewable (these forums). These forums also do not allow you to even post, if it detects a racist word. This further proves Blizzard only cares, if someone is watching.

Blizzard, fix this.

Thank you.

P.S. spread this message, so they fix this. This will likely be deleted, as it calls them out. Even though the purpose is to better the game.

Seems like alot of players and Blizzard are soooooooo focused on the many different and ingenius ways to ban/suspend people…Over frivolous BS.the player base is already dwindling…And dwindling fast
Why not focus on legit, game breaking issues, like balancing?
Not some words that hurts someones “feelings”
The “adults” in the forum/game are amazing

The thing is, I’m posting this as someone who uses racist wording a lot. I’ve been suspended for it multiple times.

Implementation of this would be fast, as they’ve shown, with ez gg, and the /spit emote on WoW. It’s a very low investment that could yeild high returns.

Not gonna lie, I am kind of amused that you admit to using racist wording and yet you complain that ‘Blizzard is not against racism’.

Doesn’t that mean that you are also not against racism?

You sound like those people who do bad stuff and then complain that nobody stops them from doing said stuff…

Just because you CAN do something, doesn’t mean they WANT you to do something.

… .sounds like they don’t like racism.

Do you know what the filter is? Cause I bet if you turn up the filter you won’t be able to see those racist words. You use the words, you get reported, you get banned.

Have a wonderful day.

Imagine defending the use of slurs in game like a weirdo

This is one of the most false correlations I have seen this year.
The “GG EZ” thing was done as a meme, as a troll to those who use that expression to brag.

Blizzard doesnt use filters (outside of the one you can activate for yourself) because they are stupid and can be bypassed by any 12 yo or more that spends 5 or more seconds thinking about it, so they are worth nothing.

Block, report, move on. Simple

The fact that ez gg was made auto reworded in fact proves they can do this. It proves they’re not against racism. The forums don’t allow you to post at all if the words are detected.

Well yeah. I’m violently racist in game but I know you shouldn’t be. They should probably do something about it

I swear there’s so many racists in this game that just spam the n word all game that don’t get banned but I get banned for calling someone bad at the game lol. the logic in this game and company is so flawed

The solution is, and always has been, to delete Match Chat in QP, Arcade, and Comp, and have it as an option in Custom Games. And to leave Voice Chat in for all modes but implement a good ping system (alongside the comms wheel) for non-verbal communication.

Match Chat is nothing but meaningless 'gg’s on the ‘good side’ and endless insults, abuse, and trolling on the other. Just delete it?

They could filter it out, but they recognize multiple truths.

  1. They like making money.
  2. Money from a racist spends just as well as money from a non racist.
  3. Banning words means that weak minded racists are less likely to be banned and seek an alternate account.

Therefore, it is better financially for Blizzard to ban racists rather than edit their match chat.

100% this.
You can get around filters and spell it differently, etc.
The issue is, some adults (and apparently dude who uses these terms) can’t control themselves and have not been educated.

It doesn’t prove they’re against racism at all. Someone else explained it already but the gg ez filter was made as a meme. You still get banned/suspended for using racial slurs — like you admitted you have been.

Even worse than that, as that’s just sociopathic behavior.

It’s like those people who do horrible stuff and are staunchly against other people who do the same horrible stuff.

It’d be like if a deep south slave owner was out protesting, fighting and crying on the streets saying “why doesn’t someone give these people freedom!”, while they barbarically do not liberate their own slaves.

It’s hypocrisy, but spiced with a pound of mental lunacy. OP might be legitimately insane.

you can’t make this stuff up. This has to all be a bad troll

I used to wonder why there wasn’t an auto-ban for racist slurs, until just recently a long-time friend (who NEVER engages in edgelord humor) accidentally typo’d one, with context making it evident the word he was going for but missed. He was mortified and apologetic and did not deserve to get banned for it (and he wasn’t).

There are also some words that are considered a slur in one English dialect but not another (I can think of one right off the top of my head), and I’m betting there are some languages that use the Latin alphabet that have words that are completely neutral in their language but look or sound like veiled/explicitly offensive language in English (i.e., Swedish for “stop” or “end”). So auto-banning can’t be trusted there. Unfortunately. And like has already been mentioned, dedicatedly offensive people will require approximately two seconds to figure out workarounds in the filter anyway.

“GG EZ” is widespread gamer speak that is well-known for its usage by sore winners, and not the result of a typo or non-English language. By changing it to silly and self-effacing dialogue, Blizzard isn’t going, “oh no, we must shield our user’s delicate eyes from possible offense”, they’re going, “come on, sore winner. Really? You gonna be like that?”

It’s like a verbal equivalent of going ( ಠ_ಠ )

GG EZ is not specifically threatened with action in the CoC; slurs are.

Also, OP, stop using racist language. It’s not cool.

[Ed. P.S., we’ve all seen people say GG EZ in order to trigger the funny filter on purpose; we don’t need to incentivize people using slurs because either a) the filter is funny and we want to see it, or b) the filter is effective so we get the message that we can talk that way all we want and it’s fine]

I’ve seen many arguments that gamers want the “gamer environment”. Which actually drives off MOST players this day in age.

I do remember a time where online games were ONLY for the adults. If a person was a RESPONSIBLE adult they would not allow their child to game online, let alone give them a headset.

Then there are numerous Police Arrest public-information videos online of young gamers being arrested after having child welfare (or their local law enforcement agency ie, The police) show up at their door for a threat or threats they made online. So then there’s that.

When I started out in online gaming. It was HALO and World of Warcraft where we could say anything and everything that was FILTHY. But then Blizzard went to the company image of being “Wholesome” (For the most part). So we have rules here of “If we can’t say that, you can’t say that!” .

Since Blizzard has this policy it does open up the possibility of being a more relaxed environment. If a person goes over to Halo and plays it. Where people act uncivilized. The matches are much more stressful. Because the majority of time it is talking bad to one another.

Sure, it felt like freedom getting to “tell someone off” and “where to go” and making them cry in chat. But like anything, I soon realized that it was 10% about the actual gaming and 90% of the time saying whatever crude and hateful things that comes to mind. I guess I would rather be here and doing actual gaming, then spending the majority of my time coming up with Edgy insults and wasting my time.

“Gamer culture” = Being able to anonymously be a trash human being with no fear of repercussions.

Yep.

Then comes “freedom of speech” and “people have thin skins”

I have never heard this from anyone who has anything to say that isn’t spouting hate.
