This is probably the last thing I expected to be complaining about … I feel like the hat (Lv3/4) is actually bordering on an issue of balance and/or an argument for it being pay-to-win.
It’s no secret that hitboxes don’t match character models 1:1. We’ve all experienced no-regs. A lot of the time, a hero’s hair/hats/helmets etc. will extend outside the bounds of a hitbox. This isn’t terrible so long as it’s consistent in that manner across skins. With Widow, you can consistently expect that the very top of her red outline (ponytail and such in most of her skins) will not function as a hitbox. That’s fine; we need variation in skins, and I realize it’s a PITA to work around this gameplay aspect while trying to push the creative envelope. Varied hats and hairstyles are a given.
Though given how small her head hitbox is, combined with how large the mythic hat is relative to it, you have an issue where it’s extremely easy to no-reg what feels like should be a headshot. It’s far more difficult to gauge where the top of the hitbox is, and how wide it is at or above the brim of the hat. Mind you, this isn’t really an issue up close. However, if you’re at a distance as another widow or an ashe, for example, you’ve got little real-estate to work with in terms of the amount of pixels on your screen to click that will register a headshot. On most heroes this is less of an issue. With widow, you’re gonna see a lot of mirrors, with a focus on winning what usually isn’t more than an exchange of 2-3 shots. If someone doesn’t go sombra, winston or genji, they’re going to probably try and mirror her. In this case, you’re going to find yourself shooting for something within the red outline and above her shoulders. If this were any other hero, I probably wouldn’t be bringing this up. But given how much value rests on a single shot in the widow game… you get the point?
Personally, I’ve found it incredibly noticeable whenever I’m up against this skin. It feels like I’m getting far more no-regs than against any other skin. And I’m talking about shots where I don’t immediately die after having missed them. You can’t always differentiate between a ping/timing issue and simply having missed in the moment when it’s close enough to call the result into question.
Anyway, I’m curious to know what other widow players think. Is it just me, or do the rest of you notice this as well? For transparency; I’m a plat widow main. My skill with her is nothing special. I’m mid af. I’m also complaining about my main being too OP. So take that for what it is, rather than perceiving this as some angry rant someone wrote after losing a comp game or something.
