I’m just curious what people think reviews from major gaming outlets will look like when OW2 releases. I have my own guess, I’m wondering what other people think.
I’d expect a Metacritic score (from critics) no lower than 80. OW1 currently sits at 90. IMO, a game reviewer that likes OW1 won’t see anything in OW2 that’s so offensively bad that they need to give it a much lower score, and definitely not a truly BAD score.
Reviewers generally don’t care much about monetization unless it’s extremely egregious. I also don’t see anyone disliking 5v5 enough to take a stand and claim it’s objectively worse. The lack of content is a big issue for lots of players (including me), but that’s more like a lack of innovation than an actual negative feature that harms the game. Might be too abstract and subjective of a reason to deduct points in an “objective” review.
Most outlets have at least one or several OW1 superfans on staff, and I just don’t see major outlets expressing skepticism about OW2, despite what players have to say about the game. I’d wager most OW2 reviews will be done by OW superfans who are rooting for this game to succeed, and the scores will be pretty high. I doubt any major outlet goes under a 70% (if there are no major bugs).
As for the general public, I think Youtube Clickbait is going to go wild on this game, especially the monetization. Blizzard hate is always easy content, and it seems like a sure thing for this game to have some nasty monetization.
I can’t imagine anyone who disliked OW1 will be convinced that OW2 is worth their time. Some brand new players will jump in, for sure, but it’s not clear for how long. Longtime OW players will be split, as we can see already. I expect the User Score on Metacritic to be at least 20% lower than the critics’ score (which is pretty typical for divisive games like OW).
A fitting title for the for the people who participate in such a treasonous action against Blizzard - who has been doing its best lately to uphold community standards - and who is now the Clarion call of excellence that we need in the gaming community.
maybe not then. people dont really need reviews for a ftp fps anyway. they can just try it with no investment
i dont see them being much lower though, places like ign hand out 8/10 reviews like they are nothing.
those reviewers are usually not the type to be die hard 6 vs 6 players that cant stand the thought of losing a player. they probably dont even play ow that much
However, that doesn’t mean squat nowadays as any media can be praised by critics with near perfect reviews but the audience/public will provide the honest truth since they aren’t paid to lie for a company.
Im sure it won’t be ‘fully’ released meaning it won’t warrant scores. Bit like every other f2p game that was in early access…. For years upon years so coukd avoid the same fate
I trust youtuber game reviewers more than I trust anything that comes from the big names in gaming journalism. It’s mostly just a bunch of rubbish sellouts.
I’ve noticed public reviews are useless. Actually, reviews are useless; I’ve never known a single person who uses reviews before making a decision on games.
It’ll be a lot of “promising start, uphill battle,” kinda stuff, which is honestly likely to be relatively true, but I’m not going to be terrible preoccupied with review scores.
Game critics have been a joke for about 20 years or so for this exact reason.
Same ‘fun’ heroes. Familiar comps. Pretty. Accessible. Polished.
But…
Not enough new content, yet. Supports are horrible to play! You literally have to delete a friend from your 6-stack, which will feel the worst on launch day when everyone wants to play together!
But in all seriousness, how does a publication review a patch? I think it’s for the best if they don’t review OW2 anytime soon. Better if they wait a year or so for it to develop further, which is what some did with Fortnite BR.
