Switch between 2 modes (no CD):
First mode:
Gives everyone 50% damage reduction in a 12m radius (Not Roadhog), however any damage your teammates would’ve taken is redirected to Roadhog.
As Roadhog takes damage, he fills a resource bar.
Second mode:
Roadhog rapidly depletes his resource bar, healing him rapidly in the process and gains 50% damage reduction. The resource bar fills in a 2:1 ratio, every 2 damage Roadhog takes, fills the bar by 1 unit to a maximum of 300 health.
A couple things this achieves:
- Overall makes Roadhog less of an ult battery, enemies can still charge there ults off him, however because he is giving damage reduction to all allies, overall the enemy is going to get far less ult-charge.
- He is no longer just a fat dps, in a 1v1 scenario these changes will actually make him slightly weaker, but in a team setting he will be very much stronger. He can now officially tank for the team and will have to be focused like other tanks before killing anyone else.
- Very good counter against snipers, with Roadhog on your team, random 1-shots won’t happen.
Few things to note:
Damage done to Roadhog by mode 1 will not contribute to enemy ult charge.
If enemies decide to only focus Roadhog, it means they are not focusing your dps and squishies and they will have to burn through 900hp while the rest of your team has free rein to kill the enemy team.

I don’t know how I feel about any reworks to hog. He fits really well in bunker comps as an off-tank. Isn’t that enough to say that he is actually a tank? After all, all off-tanks are hybrid dps-tank heroes.

I don’t like to see a rework because that would only split the playerbase. Reworks should be the last attempt at making the hero viable after all the other attempts has failed.
Serious question: Is Roadhog even in a bad state that he requires massive changes?
I get he’s an ult battery, but looking solely at his stats, even in GM, doesn’t he seems to be in a bad state.

Roadhog isn’t exactly great atm and I do agree with you that he is basically just a fight dps.
He doesn’t have damage mitigation abilities like other tanks, just sustain and damage.
If the devs ever do decide to rework him, I think your idea is pretty cool, however, I don’t know if they will because why “fix” what isn’t broken.
His damage mitigation is taking the damage and self healing. The problem with Overwatch is that taking damage is too beneficial to the enemy team.
The fix to Roadhog should have always been reduced ult charge generated for damage sustained. Basically he should provide a 200-300 hp hero worth of ult charge when receiving 600 damage instead of granting 600 damage in ult charge and healing it back so he can hand over more ult charge.
Or we just reverse the changes and make him actually fun again.

Roadhog rides again!
They need to give him his old kickbutt motorcycle. Instead of the current pink child bike with the constantly breaking chains.

Roadhog has literally never been a tank - he’s always been a fat dps.
That’s why hog mains like him, they get to pretend they are tanking for the team while they’re really just playing dps. They’ll never agree with you on any rework suggestions that actually turn him into a tank.

He’s a fat DPS. We’ve all accepted this by now.
Even D.va can block damage.
Even Hammond can make space.
Hog? Kills stuff and does damage.

I think this is the last thing Hog needs imo
The last thing this game need is more AoE abilities
I still think he needs his damage back so he can be a fat DPS, because it wouldn’t hurt to have that back with this meta…

Im of the opinion that hog is more of a tank than zarya, but i do like your ideas, especially if given to a new tank.
A tank that does this would be so cool.
This is better an idea for a new Tank than a rework for Hog.

Recovers 300hp at high speed? Check
Halved incoming damage during breather? Check
Creates space with his hook combo? Check

Or they could slightly bump his damage to like 180 and that would fix almost all of his issues.
That’s all then need to do to make him compete with Zarya and D.Va. It would also move him back to where he was originally designed to be, but without the portal hook or the very close pull.
Reducing his feeding is like putting a band aid on a amputation. Roadhog was never a standard tank in the first place, why should he be reworked into one?
Hook won’t be “unpatched” to be broken again, so while I could agree with reverting damage and clip size, you realize that would mean no more walky-walk during Take a breather right?
