She’s 21 now because there’s no attempt to create interesting lore or even a consistent lore for us. She’s 21 because every hero has a some sort of agenda fulfilling in terms of inclusivity (this is not conspiracy or rightism, kotaku. com/activision-blizzard-diversity-tool-overwatch-2-call-of-1848924832).
Kiriko is created to cater the zoomer audience, and it’s necessary for her to be 21 for that thing to be realistic. That’s why her voice lines are so cringe too, fellow kids.
And the way they portrayed zoomer representative char shows how detached they are from the reality.
And btw, who is this McCree guy people are talking about? Never heard of him. More like McWho?
You say zoomer… but she has a very distinctly gen X sense of humor and outlook.
Their lore consistency however is like hearing a story from a 5 year old: We just make stuff up that sounds good and don’t bother to reference anything else we’ve ever said.
You must be significantly better than me at paying attention, because I don’t even know what the difference between those things is. I just know they’re different generations.
I am going to out myself here. I have no clue what the difference between zoomers, millennials or Gen X is. And I am so boomer that HanaSolo stole my thunder. But at least I do not feel alone any longer.
Zoomers have a very … different take on a lot of things. I don’t know a lot about it but I know when I see their jokes and memes they are very incomprehensible to me and basically speak a different language.
I AM gen X. Sarcasm is a way of life, we cared a lot less about others opinions (less than the instagram millenial generation anyway), and generally had very dry senses of humor. I feel like this is Kiriko, and also why a lot of people don’t like her personality. It grates if you don’t understand it.
Quick and dirty:
Gen X is sarcastic and apathetic
Millenials are concerned and image focused
Zoomers are abstract and secretly nihilistic.
As always these are generalizations and do not always apply. But when you make a character, if you adhere to these types you will have generations identifying in part with them.
Games with lore is good, because consistency means extra content. A LOT of people like League of Legends because lore and the extra stuff that’s going on. Narrative and writing along with extra content gets players more immersed and invested into said game or games (Since LoL has lots of different games to show off their lore.) It’s also just an aspect that shows if the people behind the game even care or not.
Is it the best and most consistent? No, but it’s FAR better than Overwatch which seems to be more consistent in failing to remember it’s own lore as it falls further and further into basically being Relationship Shipping bait only. As it becomes more and more unimportant to care about the world and only becomes “hehe funneh monkey winton zapzap”, you are going to find more people becoming apathetic about Overwatch and the future of the game.
King belongs to activision, and ofc after it being leaked they would say it’s not being used.
I wanted to say this, all the cinematics, comic books, everything goes into garbage if there’s no serious attempt to have a good lore. You either completely ignore it and don’t even try to explain it, like in Left 4 dead, or you do it properly. Or there’s third option, you are blizzard.
It is true. I was watching some Zoomers after a concert video and I have literally no clue what the hell they are trying to say. I already knew the day would come when I would be “that old guy” and not understand the modern lingo, but these cats are on an entirely different level and I feel we let my parents off easy by comparison.
I’m going to lay out why it works in Left4dead and why lore and narrative is more important in Overwatch.
Leftdead is easy because it’s modern. A LOT you can just explain from the visual aspect of the game. It doesn’t take much except Bill’s design to know he’s a war veteran, and voicelines delve further into that. Playing the game, listening to voice lines, and reading what is left written on the walls is JUST ENOUGH to make the game not shallow feeling. You get that there was a virus, it got way worse, and now everyone living is drastically is in danger. This works well enough in a fast-paced game you really don’t need to think THAT hard about in certain areas, but there is content going on in the background if you did.
Overwatch is different. You have a sci-fi setting where MOST characters seem to have super powers based on tech. You have SOME sort of story going on in the background. There are “good guys” and “bad guys”. You have a talking genius gorilla. A Time traveler. A doctor who flies. Robot ninja. It’s very futuristic and abstract that leaves a lot of room to explain things.
Problem is there isn’t really a lot doing that. Especially nowadays. Having their own comics really helped this a lot. Cinematics and other things did as well. However, it was very skimp back in the day and it most certainly is broken and empty-cup nowadays.
