Less smurfs? Nope, f2p baby!

Everyone complaining about wanting less smurfs - nope we’re going f2p and I doubt Blizzard will pick up that f2p cheaters and smurfs. It’s all gonna be dropped on our heads.

Thanks Blizzard for allowing the complaint threads to pile up!

Smurfs and throwers account for less than 5% of matches, it’s just negative association that makes people think it’s more than that.

I’m not saying every match has smurfs. Please read what I said again in a different way.

What way was anyone meant to take it? you literally said “get over it”?

¯_(ツ)_/¯

PS: I read it as if you were being a sassy b**ch, I thought you were cute.

Those that rant and rave about smurfs are just short sighted & selfish. Truth is, smurfing is actually good for the game. If it weren’t for smurfs playing in lower ranks, players wouldn’t be faced with an actual opportunity to see what higher ranked gameplay looks like. They can either complain or they can work together to take on the challenge in the comp match.
Smurfs help innovate the skills & coordination of lower ranked players and that’s a good thing. If this weren’t true, Blizz would’ve done something about smurfing years ago. I’m looking forward to OW2 becoming F2P so we can further bless the lower ranks and help them learn to overcome challenges.

Every game meaning (every videogame title/release) has smurfs.

Man, I dunno. Rogue Legacy 2 doesn’t have smurfs.

I figured it was safe to assume that you meant “every overwatch game” since we’re on an overwatch forum.

Just about every competitive game these days is free to play, and as a result have smurfs. This problem is not unique to Overwatch. People like to make the issue a lot worse than it is too because then they have an excuse to why they aren’t a higher rank. Best not to waste energy on the matter.

Really the only thing I care about are hackers and throwers.

Hardware banning hackers would be nice.

(Expensive and unrealistic) live review of gameplay sabotage would also be fantastic.

What’s the source for your data on this, and how are you defining a smurf?

I ran a multiple course study back in season 5,6,7, and 8. Which was posted on the old forum before it was nuked. The study was conducted generally in high bronze/low-silver. There are a lot more smurfs in the 1000 area of bronze than other areas of play; however, it never went above 10%. The data consisted of over 1500 games played.

Someone significantly better than the rank in which they are playing. Multiple admitted to being “smurfs” when questioned mid/post-game in which their main accounts were much higher than the rank they were playing at.

Isn’t that nearing 5 years ago

As I’ve played off and on over the years I’ve come across a smurf or two but I highly doubt much has changed in the competitive scene. I certainly don’t feel like it has. If anything I encounter less smurfing now-a-days than I did back then. I’ve also climbed closer to mid-gold where everyone just kinda blends together.

I’ve gotten reports from people fairly recently telling me that 1000sr is still a cesspool of smurf pre-fabs and toxicity but as they either go down or above the rank; 900 and 1200, respectively, the problems drop back to normal, acceptable, rates.

Toxicity has increased in a subset of players but gets dealt with fairly quickly.

(It’s almost as if the player report system actually works - who would have guessed?)

I could start logging my experiences again if you really want new and updated statistics. It wouldn’t be nearly as comprehensive as all my previous data since private profiles are a thing… though I have learned that the group with the higher average rating always starts by defending now (this is good information for QP).

Arcade is actually a much friendlier side of the playerbase overall and if you’re feeling bad about all the casual snipers in the other modes you can play mystery heroes to reset your anger meter.

On what planet do u live in? When i play for hours on my own free time i have smurfs 8 out of 10 games average consistently for months. I even have enough screenshots to prove it. Unless I’m in that 5% every time, then i think your data is wrong.

as if 15 euros / dollar would have been such a big hurdle

It might be old but it’s certainly not wrong.

I’d like to put forth that you’re exaggerating your “80% of my games have smurfs” statement. Not everyone marginally better than you is a smurf. I would consider someone who threw their way from Gold and is playing in bronze a smurf but someone who is within 300sr of you is not a smurf.

People have their off days and their “on fire” days. Those that pop off aren’t smurfs either. It’ s a much more narrow definition than you might believe.

Especially when you can sell a high placed account to smucks that wear the rank like an undeserved medal
