Left Overwatch for Quake Champions

I saw a post on the forums about a week ago that was about how Quake Champions was free to play for a limited time, so I decided to try it out. I loved it so much that I bought the full version not even 2 days later.

To whoever wrote that post, thank you. I literally haven’t played a match of Overwatch since, and it will be a while before I do, if ever. The game is actually really well balanced (as you would expect from a series being developed and mastered for 20+ years) and it’s a high skill game, so rarely is a death anyone’s fault but yours, so it’s pretty hard to get mad at your teammates.

And forget about toxicity, GG at the end of every match, and there’s either no text chat or a few jokes here and there about people laughing at their mistakes. Only twice has anyone actually been toxic in one of my games.

The game is still free to download until later today, and if you do, it will be free even after today (you just wont have the full version). anyone who needs a game to play other than this one, go try Quake Champions.

Hey thats great man.

Haven’t delved into QC yet but I do have it downloaded. The real reasoning for me not to play is because Overwatch has already left quite an after taste.

So for me it’s not more about teambased shooters being not my own thing. Its more so that the game has gotten stale and old.

Indeed, I played it in the closed beta and it had some glaring balance issues… Started playing again last night and yeah, they’ve sorted stuff out. It’s fun, ended up buying the pack that gives access to all the champions… Tho there’s nothing wrong with Ranger, the standard champ.

…I’m kinda biased tho since Quake III Arena was my first ever MP experience so Quake has always been kinda close to my heart, lol.

I kinda wish Epic games took charge finished Unreal Tournament 4. That game has been in pre alpha for like 4 years.
I guess all they care about is Fortnite now.

Now that you have taken a blood oath you can never spend time playing overwatch ever again. Yep that’s how a gamer is supposed to be. Play a single game until he gets completely frustrated.

Take a break for half a year or so. Play some other games. I got super addicted to Monster Hunter World when that came out and didn’t even touch OW until recently.

The break made OW seem a lot more fun again. I take it less seriously and I overall have a better time playing.

The wife and I came back a couple weeks ago from three months in Paladins. We’re honestly here until August 14th, then it’s Battle for Azeroth for likely a year. At that point, it’ll be Fallout 76 or Anthem for duo play. Eventually, one day, I’ll probably be spending time in Cyberpunk 2077 for solo RPG play.

Come August, unless Fallout 76 and Anthem are both terrible games once we’re done with the WoW xpac, Overwatch will likely just be a very occasional side game that we log into once in a while, moving forward. And honestly, it’ll be a toss-up between Overwatch and HoTS as to which one we log into on a given odd night.

Lol Quake Champion is dead. Did a team deathmatch against bots because it couldn’t find 8 players. 3 of us were live and the others were bots. Uninstalled. GG

15k playing on Steam right now, löl… I think that’s pretty well for an arena shooter in 2018, found a game in under a minute for me each time.
I honestly can’t see it taking off tho even tho I wish it did.

edit: I have no idea how I replied to 2 people but I’ll take it

Since we’re talking about unrelated things that we’re doing while we’re not playing Overwatch, I’m thinking about going to see The Incredibles 2 soon.

You’re in the honeymoon stage, once the rise colored glasses go away you’ll start recognizing toxicity and balancing issues instead of ignoring it. No game is safe, and Overwatch is definitely not the biggest offender on the block.

Also, Quake is built around the FFA/TDM game mode, Overwatch is Objective based. You’re not seeing as much toxicity because you only have to worry about yourself. Quake’s gameplay is heavily mechanics and player skill based with little to no communication needed whereas Overwatch takes mechanics, player skill, and adds both communication and coordination to the mix. While comparisons can be be made, the games are really only truly alike when it comes to the fact they’re both “hero shooters” and that’s really where the comparisons stop.

Play what you like, but understand they have less in common and are much more different than you make it sound. Quake is akin to Lawbreakers whereas Overwatch is akin to Palandins (well more like Paladins is akin to Overwatch).

Didn’t that game just come out of beta as well?

Why did you “reply” to me, but quote someone else and physically reply to them?:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

This is how it went, I was actually typing my opinion on Anthem in response to your post > noticed someone said Quake Champs is dead > wiped my post > quoted him > replied to him !
It kept it as a reply to you ofc tho.

Yup, honestly… Can’t see the core playerbase of Overwatch liking Quake Champions.
Literally the only thing “hero shooter ish” in Quake Champs is the fact that each character has an ability they can use… Apart from that, it’s just a fast paced arena shooter where mostly your aim matters.

if that works for you then good but the game itself isn’t even close to being better than OW. I woudl rather play Quake Online instead.

Ahhh, yes. I’ve been there, myself.

As far as Anthem, it looks great, but I don’t have a lot of hope for it. Unfortunately, confidence in BioWare-EA just isn’t there for me. I can’t speak of the EA lootbox stuff from that game, since I never played it, but I was a SWTOR player for its first 18 months. I saw where that went. I also later played the Knights of the Fallen Empire stuff for SWTOR, and watched them turn it into basically a single-player game for $15/mo.

The fact that BioWare has hinted in interviews that if Anthem does not do extremely well, given all the resources they’ve put into it, that it might very well be the end of the BioWare division, also doesn’t invoke confidence. It just feels like too much desperation is going into Anthem development.

Now, I’m hoping to be proven wrong. As I said, the game looks great. But I will not be getting it at launch, that’s for sure. Not after backing them on SWTOR like this family did.

I’ve played Quake Champions a bit as well, and while I’ve been horribly flattened most of the time, it feels OK. Because at least I know it’s because I’m not playing well and that the person I’m up against was better than I was.

So yeah, I recommend it too. It’s actually quite fun, and if you don’t want to pay for the champions to unlock, you can get unlock them by using in-game currency earned through playing the game.

I’d highly recommend it as well. Brings me back to the good olde days of Ultimate Doom, and Unreal Tournament. It was a beautiful day when i.d. software became part of Bethesda. Glad to see one of the few developers from my childhood still kicking.

The Gaming Cycle:

  1. Finds new game that plays well and feels balanced, falls in love.
  2. Tells others about it, leaves behind “inferior” currently played games, writes long forum goodbyes.
  3. Plays new game awhile, realizes it’s flawed and imperfect, gets disillusioned and frustrated, honeymoon is over.
  4. Rinse and repeat.

Warning: vacillating leads to disappointment and broken homes if applied outside gaming, results may vary.
