Leaver penalties in QP is just taking players hostages

Everyone should be able to leave a game when someone say toxic things in chat like the n-word, homophobic slurs, “kys”, flaming, etc etc
And everyone should be able to leave a game when both teams refuse to play and do emotes on point during 15min for no reason

If Blizzard doesn’t remove leaver penalties, it can at least ban these “players” who are just ruining the game

Actively decided to queue is taking yourself hostage if anything. Don’t queue if you are only going to leave.

The penalty doesn’t technically stop you from leaving a game you don’t want to be in.

If your reason for leaving is strictly what others say.

There is a difference between deciding to queue to have fun playing a game and not being able to leave a game where there is no fun bc people are toxic/harassing or don’t want to play.

Thank you! I can’t tell you how many times this has happened and I’m in the wrong for wanting to finish the match. Literally being held hostage or get shot down with a penalty.

It needs to be loosened for sure.

I’m of the middle ground here, and we need to find compromise. Leavers SUCK, especially in competitive. Seeing someone leave as a big play happens or right away after one fight… yeah. There needs to be a system in place to restrict this. You queue, you play.

HOWEVER, this game’s social state is very bad right now. To me, this is classic lazy Blizzard handing out the quick and the dirty instead of fixing the root of the problems, or even making steps to address them. “How do we make them stay in a match? Oooh I know: harsh time penalties if they leave!” Noooo, bad Blizzard. BAD!

Why do people leave?

  • Mad
  • Not winning
  • Feeling attacked or in a dead-end match
  • Needs to physically leave, perhaps called by family (remember: 12 year olds play this)
  • Disconnect/connectivity issues
  • Honestly (saw this a lot in OW1), casual modes can sometimes be used as waiting rooms pre-“while you wait” skirmish/deathmatch stuff. Some players just queue while waiting for a few friends to get on. They leave when they’re ready to move on to comp.

The list could go on. But the fact is: the reasons aren’t ALL malicious, but let’s be real here and not pretend MOST (~75%) of leavers are because they feel they don’t have the upperhand or aren’t invested because the lobby would require too much work to win.

This all being said, the game caters to some very violent, hateful, afk, imbalanced, cheating, or otherwise painful individuals that could be your teammates. I’ve had games that issues begin in the attacker’s spawn before the game even begins. Bad blood from a previous game, someone immediately calling someone a cheater. Subsequently, they throw. Within 2 min we have a Genji who is 0-9, our tank keeps going in and dying, and its just not working out. Chat’s off the rails, spewing anger and hate. The enemy is bombarding you with team kill after team kill. Yeah… some say “oh its gonna be over in 3 min just wait it out”. But some people have lives and limited time to play. If you get an hour a night to play and this game is one of them, I’d be mad. What if you’e on defense? What if the game continues to get drawn out? I’d want to cut my losses and leave.

Long story short (too late), I feel like penalties are too harsh ESPECIALLY for casual modes right now, but would only require a LITTLE loosening of leave amount + decay to put them in a better, more agreed upon spot. I think it would help the rise of afk/those that feel stuck in matches. It’s all a scale, and our goal is the middle ground.

Yeah anyone who says the above should just get perma’d immediately. Flaming is more common and sometimes is just the result of people having a bad loss streak, so they should just be chat banned for a while.

But there really needs to be a 0 tolerance policy for slurs or telling people to off themselves.
