And since the devs refuse to improve the matchmaker, the leaver penalty does nothing, which makes it clear that leavers were never the problem.
Less people leave since the penalty, and leavers have always been part of the problem. Not the whole problem, but a big part. Especially those who leave on first death, first fight loss, see a hero they don’t like etc.

You can always go play a single player game. You’re free to leave any time and no one cares.

Less people are around. Only die hards and trash seem to be around, and the match quality has plummeted. Why? Because people keep excusing the devs for their incompetence and defending a trash matchmaker.
I just go afk or soft throw when the game is pretty much a stompfest.
They should do what the Marvel Rivals devs have done. When you leave a match now you’ll have a match against AI so you get the dopamine you need.
Then you’d be like: damnnn look at how good I am, how I destroyed the enemy tank.

People have complained about matchmaking for 8 yrs. People complain about it in every PvP game. It is what it is. Tho maybe it is time for you to stop being either the die hard or trash, and move on to something you actually enjoy?
