Latency over 200

Starting this week I have started to experience tremendous latency spikes that make the game unplayable. I will be in game, 40MS, all good, and then as I approach the enemy to engage or at random times my character will just appear and disappear at different points of the map. Then, I look at the latency: 250MS…

SAME thing happened to me! I was like “I’m gonna do the best placements ever” and had this in two games in a row! Basically throwing. I wont play comp this season anymore after this

Looking at your WinMTR test, it appears that you have two different issues compounding on eachother and both appear to be within your house or very near by it. (It’s hard to tell because the IPs are censored.)

The first hop you are going through is the test between your computer and router. It has some spikes up to 20-30 ms in the wrst column. These happen regularly enough to raise your average latency up to 5 before it even leaves your router. If you’re on wifi, swap to ethernet. It may help.

The second hop is even worse and makes me feel like the problem isn’t wifi - at least not wifi alone. If you have a separate modem and router, you can connect directly to the router and connect to the modem by ethernet. The spikes there happen even more frequently. They’re over 1000 ms, and raise your average even further - in the longer test it’s up to 100 MS but in this one you can see the average was almost 700 ms. (Probably because of how short it was.)

If you don’t have a separate modem and router, it’s very possible the router is overloaded or dying. You can power cycle the router to see if it works, but in many cases you have to replace it. If it’s rented, just swap it with the ISP. If you bought it, it’s probably time for a new one.

I would agree with you, but I play plenty of other online games and Overwatch seems to be the only with latency issues… I was just playing CounterStrike no problem.

Hey again BeardPuff,

The data packets we’re sending and receiving may also be larger or sent more frequently than some other games, which may result in what otherwise would be not as big a deal in other games causing problems for us. In this case, we have solid evidence of a network problem. I’m relatively confident that if you solve the cause the spikes I was talking about there, the problem will fully disappear. Until you do there’s not really anything else we can do to help here. If you do get it resolved and you’re still having issues, though, just send in a new WinMTR and we’ll check it out.

Beardpuff,

This is bizarre, but we still do see spikes on your local network. You appear to be being routed to Singapore in this test. This tells me when the game was testing your packets to US servers to find the best server you may have been spiking. Eventually it decided due to the spikes that Singapore was the best server.

Are you still on wifi? What’s the new make and model of your router?

Hey, somehow, after resetting my modem a second time the latency went back down again. I don’t know why it didn’t work the first time, but at least things seem to be back to normal.

Thanks for the follow up - it’s possible there was something cached after you swapped something else around, but I’m glad you’ve got something worked out for now! If for some weird reason it comes back, just contact us back with a new WinMTR and we’ll see what we can see
