Latency(?) Issues on PC

So, I’ve been having issues that I only assume have to do with latency spikes, as that’s what changes when I’m “lagging.” Basically, my game is completely fine besides random, periodic spikes where everything stops, character models go flying, etc, and then right back to normal–Except for me being in an entirely different spot. This makes the game almost entirely unplayable as I spend most of my time being thrown around and not being able to see what’s going on while my team needs me.

I’ve tried all of Blizzard’s recommended fixes and even bought a VPN because someone said it helped them–Yet I’m still having the issue. I used to be able to disconnect my internet from my computer for 30 seconds and/or restart my computer and have it be (temporarily) fixed, but now none of that works. When I run an upload/download internet speed test, It says my internet is normal. I always run these tests when no one is actively using our internet in the house, so I don’t think that’s the issue either. Plus, again, I’m not having other lag issues besides these random spikes.

I love Overwatch and it’s become extremely frustrating that I can’t even play it anymore because of this issue. Please let me know if any more information is needed and what I can try to fix this.

Howdy!

This sounds like a deysnc issue such as packet loss somewhere between the PC and the datacenter. I would recommend run a WinMTR to the server at the start of your match to capture this issue at its worst point then get the results back to us. Note run the WinMTR for the entire game before saving it. If you have no issues during that match start over the next match until the issue is captured.

Thank you!

Hello!

Thank you for your reply! Unfortunately, I must be getting some sort of error because I get a “no response from host” every time I run it (for google.com as well, but not 8.8.8.8 as a guide recommended I test). Would you happen to know how to fix this?

Are you using the IP from the game? Or the one from the WinMTR page?

The IP from in-game gives me no connection, and I think the one on the WinMTR page for Blizzard NA does connect but honestly, I have no idea if that was actually showing results since I was getting 0% loss despite TONS of “lag” (or whatever issue I am having). But if I’m just reading the wrong part I can run another test shortly with the Blizzard IP and send the results!

It sounds like you may have added some of the numbers after the IP. It’s only the first 4 sets of numbers, nothing with the colon or numbers after it.

Can you be more specific about what’s happening? Maybe your PC is overheating.

I don’t think it’s at all an overheating issue as my GPU temp stays at an average 50-60 degrees while playing. I could try and record specifically what happens in my game and somehow show it here (I’m not sure how to attach files though, if possible) if that would help?

When I try to run the test with the in-game IP (just the first 4 sets of numbers, no colon, and no port), these are the results I get from WinMTR (my IP is omitted for obvious reasons)

WinMTR v0.92 GPL V2 by Appnor MSP - Fully Managed Hosting & Cloud Provider

The average ping between your computer and the modem is very high (86ms). If this is WiFi, using a cable is recommended. If not, then you may want to have the device checked by the ISP. Since this is the local (home) network, that connection quality needs to be improved before the ping to Overwatch will improve.

Huh, interesting. I guess I’m just a bit confused because I didn’t previously have this issue (as in this issue only started a month ago at most, though it worsened over time) so I’m not sure what exactly caused this suddenly. But thank you!

Devices can start to fail intermittently, that’s the nature of network equipment.
