Lag/packet loss problem

So I’m trying to return to Overwatch after a long break. I played this before quite a bit when it was released and for a few years afterwards with barely any issues. I have the same internet as always so I’m not sure what the issue is. A year or two ago I started getting a lag/packet loss problem. The latency will constantly fluctuate from between 80-120, just moving up and down. I will also get packet loss (this is the biggest problem, because my character and others will free in place for a few moments and then jump forward in time, making it really hard to aim.

I don’t have this problem on WoW at all. I play that game all the time and sit at about 60 ms with barely any problems.

I do play using wireless internet (I know I should use a wire but my room is upstairs and the modem is downstairs) and there are two other people in the house that use the internet.

If you are on a computer that can be easily moved (like a laptop) consider moving it to the router and run tests with a direct ethernet line to see if the problem resolves or not. Alternatively, temporarily run a long ethernet cable to your computer for the test (as they are not terribly expensive). That can narrow down if your WiFi connection is the cause or not).

A couple of things to consider, your chosen WoW realm(s) may not be in the same datacenter location as that of the nearest Overwatch datacenter that you connect to. For example, by default I connect to the Chicago datacenter for Overwatch as that is the fastest latency measured by the game client, but my favorite WoW realms are in Los Angeles. So if there is a problem with Overwatch, it is because there can be a connection disruption between the Overwatch datacenter and your location, and that is not seen with your WoW realm if the routing is different.

If doing a direct hardwire test is not feasible at least run a WinMTR test, and we can at least point out where any disconnections or latency issues are occurring.

WinMTR instructions:

  1. Download WinMTR-v092.zip (WinMTR)
  2. Unzip the WinMTR.zip file to the Desktop.
  3. Open the WinMTR folder and select the 32 or 64 bit version. Choose whichever one corresponds to your version of Windows.
  4. Run the WinMTR.exe
  5. Type the IP address you want to trace in the “Host” field. To get the correct IP you will actually need to open up the game and go Practice Vs AI or Quick Play and if you are on PC hit Ctrl+Shift+N and it will bring up the ingame network diagnostic graph. In the top left corner is the IP address you want to run WinMTR to.
    Network Graph
note When looking at the IP it will show up ingame as something like 12.34.56.78:12345. You will want to leave the last 5 digits and the colon at the end off and the IP you want to use is just the 12.34.56.78
  6. Once you notice the connection issue while playing, play for about 6 more minutes, minimize the game and click on “Stop”.
  7. Click on “Copy text to clipboard”, then return to this forum thread.
  8. Type two sets of four squiggly lines and then paste the contents of the WinMTR test between: ~~~~ Paste WinMTR Test Results Here ~~~~

If in the event you can’t even connect to Overwatch and get into any game mode at all, please use one of the following IP addresses based on your geographical region:

  • US West - 24.105.30.129
  • US Central - 24.105.62.129
  • Brazil - 54.207.107.12
  • Europe Netherlands - 185.60.114.159
  • Europe France - 185.60.112.157
  • Korea - 211.234.110.1
  • Taiwan - 203.66.81.98
  • Australia - 37.244.42.56

I’m pretty sure that a ethernet cable will fix it. I have always used a ethernet cable in the past but I can’t use it because the bottom floor has tile so the cable would just be sitting on the floor. I was hoping that there would be a wireless fix because moving the modem isn’t feasible either (there is no wiring in my room for a modem). Regardless, I will consider doing the tests you mentioned.

Thanks!

I am going to link to you to some general tips that help overall… note though these are general tips and may or may not help.
