her ult is cool, but all her abilities feel reverse engineered from other heroes.
her teleport is a mix of Moira and Mercy’s fade and guardian angel.
her protection Suzu is Ana and Baptiste’s nade and lamp.
her ult is Lucio’s speed boost and finally some sort of a cooldown reduction capability, so at least that’s new (in OW, we have seen cooldown reduction in countless other games, including Blizzard games).
from what I can see about her personality? I’m sorry, the “lone wolf” and a “cool girl” shtick is as outdated today as muscle bound heroes were dated in the 00s. another thing is that thematically they really tried to sell us this whole “she’s brought up by two worlds”, but Moira’s dychotomy and Baptiste’s redemption feel way more genuine. we expect something more unique and deeper from our female heroes by now. at least Queen feels properly charismatic, Sojourn has certified “cool girl” vibes.
Kiriko? so far, to me… she’s the poochie of Overwatch. you can really tell the old guard of hero designers left and they took their inspiration with them. if Kiriko is anything to go by with what we can expect from new heroes, I don’t think Overwatch’s unique magic will stay for long.
I have the feeling most heroes coming up will be like that especially when the game is going f2p there is going to be a whole lot of generic and rushed stuff.
Every video game is based around a core set of mechanics. Deviating too far from those mechanics isn’t helpful. Its why power creep exists because as new mechanics are added between characters newer ones can use the features of past ones to make new combinations.
Right now, we have our first ever cooldown reduction hero. A first time ever in overwatch with Kitsune Gate.
The only directly copied ability is the wall climb passive. Every single other ability has at least one unique aspect to it.
You can make direct comparisons between a lot more abilities than you realise, but they will still tend to function differently enough to stand on their own, and contribute to a kit that makes the hero feel different to any other hero in the game.
I don’t really care about this, it’s never stopped any other hero that these same things were said about from feeling cool and unique
Its nothing like Fade at all, I don’t know how you got that, its like you just wanted to keep your comparisons entirely in the support role and wanted to find the closest thing to a teleport we had so you didn’t have to say tracer
I mean only in that it has aoe healing and can save lives from quick burst potentially, but the way it functions is gonna be drastically different from either of those abilities, you’re not gonna throw the suzu at enemies like you would made, and you cant use the suzu in the same situations as the immo field but at the same time can use it different ways
where did you get this from, I never got that impression, she’s been described as a natural leader and one of her big lore things is that she’s part of a gang, that doesn’t exactly scream lone wolf to me
I’ve already said this in a similar thread but I’ll say again. I think she’s a lot better designed compared to previous DLC support heroes. She’s not too overly simplistic in design like moira but isn’t too complicated like baptiste either. She’s right in the middle which is good.
To be fair, I actually really like baptiste in OW1. But I’m aware that not many people enjoy playing baptiste that much because of how clunky he feels and how high of a skill ceiling is required to play him optimally. And as much as I like baptiste, his excessive viability forces me to have to stay on him 24/7 which can get tiring after a while. I just wish other fun support heroes like lucio were also equally as viable in OW1. They never did lucio justice in OW1, and he’s finally receiving what he deserves in OW2 (higher viability).
Now onto OW2 and Kiriko, I find her design a lot more similar to ana, lucio and mercy whom I consider the most fun support trio. The only concern I have with Kiriko right now is whether her M1 and M2 “flows” properly. Since her way of healing feels a bit slow and unreliable, and I’m not sure if you can make the two abilities (M1 and M2) flow like baptiste the better you get at the hero.
I find her similar to Moira because of the aggressive nature of her kit,120 DMG for headshots is gonna be really impactful.Swift Step is also comparable to fade since you get aggressive and use it as a “get out of jail free card”.
I do really like her gameplay design aswell, apparently our next support is made to be “Mercy like” so it does worry me a bit since Mercy isn’t very good in OW2.
Me, me! I remember that they called her a “lazy combination of Reins shield, Zaryas ult in weak, Bastions sentry in weak, ult Mercy boost in better and bland CC+ damage reduction”.
Its just the same again. Why did people not cry about Sojourn! She is really just 76 at this point with a hanzo shot! or that JQ is the same as Roadhog but in thin?
You’ll have to brace yourselves that every hero from now on (and for a while now) will mostly have similar things of already existing heroes. It’s just the nature of constantly adding new characters to a game. Fighting games have so many of the same things players categorize characters into groups with similar traits like “shotos” or “grapplers” or something. Particularly if they’re designed from a human base. Only something weird like a robot like Wrecking Ball would likely have different behaviors and abilities appear but even then a character like that still has guns and shields. As for her design, I liked the alt designs that had more of a spiritual flair, like the longer dress, staff and the ghostly design, I like that element of Japanese culture (even if its in fictional media) a bit more and I also think I prefer ninjas that are more old fashion ninja tropes rather than the Naruto-style ninja.
Orisa was an amalgamation of recycled mechanics. That is just a fact. It all came together in an interesting way, but she was the beginning of the end.
Sombra and Ana were the only heroes who brought new mechanics to the game.
