My thought process for Kingmaker was the following (I haven’t been keeping up with any news or discussion about it):
Tanks would be toned down slightly, so that (specifically) Zarya and other tanks don’t completely ruin the game mode. Each Kingmaker passive would be uniquely tailored to the hero akin to the scrapped PvE talents so that the buff wouldn’t be insane on some characters and completely worthless on the others. I was also thinking they would allow you to swap roles to adjust the kingmaker, a minor complaint they didn’t but still annoying nonetheless.
My overall thoughts on this after playing it for several hours are that this just shows how extremely lazy, incompetent and out of touch the dev team is. If there is genuinely that much red tape and managerial blockades to the dev team implementing something more fun, more unique, and a little riskier then Blizzard needs to step back and evaluate how they are doing business. My guess is there isn’t, and the dev team just genuinely isn’t talented enough to carry on designing this IP.
So instead we got:
A flat buff that is extremely bad for some characters and kind of okay for others. We still have bloated tank toolkits and super supports. In general I’ve noticed most people just want the DPS to be the kingmaker because the buffs are so irrelevant for tank/support roles because of how much better 2 normal tank/supports are compared to 1 slightly buffed tank/support. The matches end up becoming a race to see which Rein/Zarya build their ults faster and more frequently.
Marvel rivals tomorrow, get me outta here.
