Just wondering what's wrong with calling it "e-girl hop"

I don’t really understand that? It’s only a joke being made in light heartedness (I hope)

Like I don’t mean to offend anyone, I just don’t understand why people are getting offended in the first place

Like seriously when I say it I’m really not meaning to offend anyone, I just use it kinda ironically (I get called an e-girl pretty often because, “your a mercy one trick” and “you’re a girl” of which I am neither)

What’s an “e-girl” and what’s funny about this “joke”?

It’s not a joke. It’s legit a misogynistic remark, and trust me, we don’t need or want any more sexism or anything like it in this hobby, in this industry, and in this world.

For a group that suffered marginalization and derision for so long, you’d think nerddom as a whole would be more welcoming and sympathetic. Boy, would you be wrong.

it’s been called superjump for over a year since i heard of it… im guessing some youtuber made a video calling it that and his fans are here today spreading their gospel like it’s a fidget spinner fad.

There’s a stereotype that women who play OW are usually Mercy one tricks. And ‘e-girl’ in general is a sexist meme to talk down to women. It’s not the term itself but when you see it used most of the time it’s some dummy assuming someone is bad at the game because they’re a woman.

the kids using the joke don’t know what this is. so it continues to be a joke.

I honestly can’t believe you even had to ask this question.

I think it’s mostly because “e-girl” implies the player is boosted.

I honestly don’t think it’s intended as a sexist remark. The only times I see it used I interpret it as some lighthearted joke.

I see how it could be offensive, but complaining about it just makes it worse.

Nerddom unfortunately suffers from rejection syndrome, and often overcompensates.

What’s a fidget spinner? /s

Words do get softened over time and I really don’t think everyone who uses it means it as a pejorative but you’d have be a little ignorant not to see the sexism as the very basis for the term.

So it is obviously a derogatory term? Then OP’s incomprehension of why people get offended is strange.

Call Genji mains weebs and no one bats an eye.

Call Mercy mains e-girls and everyone loses their mind.

“I made a comment and people were offended by it, so here’s a good idea, lets make a whole thread about it!”
