Jesse McCree named after a sexual harasser at blizzard

Afaik, he’s not even known to be a sexual harasser or linked to the lawsuit. People are defaming the guy because he was in the same chatroom and part of a group that had a sexual harasser.

Imagine if you had a friend that was later known to be a sexual harasser. Now you too are a sexual harasser because he was a close friend of yours.

Guilt by association fallacy.

Imagine if you had a friend who was a sexual harasser…and you knew…and made jokes about it.

That’s a reach, and you know it.

Do you have proof he knew?

Asking because I honestly do not know, where is it explicitly referenced that McCree is named after a Blizz employee?

If there’s no link/article accompanying your response, it’s not tangible enough.

Michael Chu said it on a video. They made him sign that he allowed his name to be used etc.

They were just looking for the best cowboy name ever and they couldn’t find it until someone referenced his name.

He’s not really “named after” them, it’s just that when they were trying to figure out what they should name Mccree, one employee threw the developer’s name into the mix and it eventually came out on top because Jesse Mccree is a perfect cowboy name.

Copy…. Thank you!!

And McCree was named in the most recent sex scandal as I understand it.

Well, he was in a screenshot of a group chat. He was essentially a “member” of a group that had the sexual harasser mentioned in the lawsuit specifically.

I feel it’s a reach and quite a bit of defamation. People have their pitchforks ready and torches have been lit, so there’s no stopping them.

Afaik he hasn’t been mentioned specifically in the lawsuit, that’s why no one caught wind of him being related until his name popped in in a screenshot.

I trust Blizzard to do the right thing should that truly be the case one way or another.

Yes, but people need to understand that wellbeing isn’t a one way street. Imagine you’re the guy, that hasn’t done anything… and suddenly you get this parade rallying against you when you haven’t even been mentioned for having misconduct on the ongoing lawsuit.

Thinking that “well corporate will eventually get this right”, doesn’t mean this can be a very miserable time period for someone who might not even be guilty of any of the things mentioned there…

The damage’s being done. Look at this baseless thread title. Most people won’t read any further than: “Jesse McCree dev is a sexual harasser”.

I can’t look at McCree and not think of “McCree”.

I really hope they don’t change his name because as much as I hate that damn Flash to Fan, McCree is the perfect name for him.

In fact, this thread title should be mod sanctioned because it’s not even what the tweet referenced is saying. And now this bad take permeated and everyone is assuming that Jesse McCree the dev is a sexual harasser and the question is whether to keep his name on the character or not.

And i’m like: that’s an olympic hurdle race gold medal.

PS: It’s like when people started saying crap like Jeff Kaplan left the company because he had something to do with the events cited in the lawsuit. And I’m like “you can’t make this sh-t up. Well actually you can, lol”

Good take.tm /s

I think in this case, “appreciate the art, but not the artist” would apply here. As in, I can appreciate the hero McCree, along with his gameplay, lore, and his place in the Overwatch universe…but I don’t appreciate the developer he was supposedly named after.

And to be fair, Jesse McCree is probably the most “cowboy icon” name Blizzard can get without having to seek copyright permission from the production company/companies behind old Western TV shows/movies…and I would argue some of those old Westerns probably have some skeletons in the closet that would be revealed after doing even a tiny bit of research.

The dude was being told by the accused about gathering chicks for the ‘Cosby suite’ and laughing about how the accused would try and eff them all.

Based on everything I’ve seen, this is incorrect.

Sorry, I missed the part where it says that the real Jesse McCree is a sexual harasser.
From what I can see, the guy seems to be a douchebag, but there’s nothing pointing at sexual harassment.

first: bad reading comprehension. He did not say he’d eff them, he clarified to Save that Alex would want to eff them, not marry them.

second: It’s a private chat with a context that only works as part of a safe haven for jest, self-deprecation, being facetious. Point in case: the actual harasser saying he’s middle-eastern so he can marry multiple people. That’s obviously a joke based on racial stereotyping of himself.

Or you truly mean every thing you say in your friends only chats?

I think it’s called “mental gymnastics” and not “olympic hurdles”…but regardless, I am in full agreement that while moderators have mostly been hands off (and I am thankful that they are letting folks air their criticisms here on the forums as opposed to playing damage control like the mods typically have done in past controversies), this thread really stopped being about criticism of McCree the developer a long time ago…so sadly, moderators need to step in and clean up this thread, starting with the name calling/insults of thread participants.
