Imagine being named “Joe Smith” and suddenly another guy named “Joe Smith” does something really bad. Would you change your name?

Unfortunate, but who’s at fault there?

as I posted in another thread. Was the real person a sexual harasser? This screenshot tells me a few things:
He knew Alex was a gross human being.
He was at the very least “work friends” with this group.
He interacted with them at a level in which they felt comfortable having him in this group that talked about Alex’s habits.

But… not that the real person Sexually Harassed people.
It proves complacency, which is no small thing, but the title of this thread makes me worry he’s getting misrepresented by the “mob”.
Maybe he doesn’t deserve to have his name glorified… but at the very least he deserves actual accusations and not proximity mob justice.

What? They’re just good names for videogame characters, surely you don’t care what they were inspired by?

Guess he’s gonna get renamed to Joel.

Except that isn’t the case here, because the character is directly named in homage of the dev. It’s not a coincidence at all.

A more apt example would be:
Imagine a man named Joe Smith. His family like him so much, that they name their new baby boy Joe Smith in tribute. One day the original Joe Smith is revealed to be a sex offender. Would a now fully grown baby Joe Smith want to change his name?

so, now Mcree will be removed from the game because of this, like what happened with WoW??

I REALLY REALLY Hope Mcree players isn’t gonna get harrased and be called sexual harrasser in game. (with how people are reacting about this fiasco, it might happen)

TIL, a developer name a character after himself. This feels so wrong.

I can’t imagine naming a character afetr myself.

The dev didn’t name a character after himself - he’s not even on the OW team.

The OW team asked permission to use his name, since it sounded like a cowboy name.

Stealing….

They chose a random guy’s name and ask for his consent?

I’m sure there are 100s of cowboy’ish names they can come up with…

I mostly play McCree and I’ll just laugh if people get upset about it.

That said I saw someone go berserk in chat earlier today because another player was wearing the Sinatra Zarya skin.

Until next time we make each-other uncomfortable… :upside_down_face:

lmao, seems hilarious. what did they said about that skin?

Timelinked for convenience.

Not the skin but they proceeded to call the player lots of nice words associated with what Sinatra was accused of that I can’t type on the forum… :upside_down_face:

If it makes people feel better to change the name then I guess? Although I’m sure if you dug hard enough you’d fine any combination of first/last names associated with someone, somewhere who did something bad.
