well boot licking and just being plain friendly is 2 different things.
boot licking = you’re giving compliments to say that you are better than the others who don’t necessarily agree with him, more or less being someones yes man.

just giving compliments to someone is just being nice and honest.

the difference is if you start comparing yourself to others who don’t agree with the compliment.

for example:
your patch was great i love it (very nice and friendly)

your patch was great i love it despite what everyone else says about it (this some boot lickery right here implying that he’s right and everyone else is wrong for having a different opinion)
