I've seen this content drought before in another game I play

In Guild Wars 2, right before and after the first Expansion, there was an enormous content drought. Nothing new was added, only small balance changes.
Before the drought, there was an update every 2 weeks or so, but they couldn’t keep that schedule up. But after more then a year of nothing (except for the expansion), they started regularly update every 2-3 months, and more leaning to the 2 month mark, with an uptick in quality every time.
With Overwatch having has a year of almost nothing really new (bar the heroes and one Archives event), I do hope we get new stuff next year with high quality. You do not hire new writers to do nothing, so I think there will be more lore.

I think the patch they just had that solved a bunch of spaghetti code for the harddrive/memory processing was to make way for adding content, without crashing consoles, with their limited hardware.
