I've never actually played against GOATS

With all this talk of 6v6 and old super comps returning (Moth, Goats, Double shields even if I don’t think DS was that super), something just occurred to me. I don’t think I’ve actually played against the Goats comp. I usually play quick play, and I believe that was my biggest argument against the radical changes that were being suggested back in the day.

So much of the game was going to get changed or outright uprooted to fix something that only one portion of the player base struggled against. Lower ranks and quick players couldn’t use the comp well enough to get value, so I don’t think they did often. My memory is a little fuzzy. I do remember seeing it in the league often, and I remember everyone thinking the changes to stop goats existed only to make OWL more fun to watch.

I sincerely don’t think any of the changes helped the game. They might had made the game more balanced, but OW’s reputation just slipped more and more until it hit rock bottom with OW2. No where to go but up, though!

GOATS isnt going to be in the game with this test.

Double shield was what sucked about qp in ow1

You still won’t see goats.
You will see the 6 german holy crusader strategy though.

double shield wasnt a problem for dive though

If you ask me, OW2 has been improving quite a lot in 2024

I think the game is in a pretty great spot now all things considered

sure, cant always get 6 people in qp to play dive though

this is why RQ was a blessing after years of suffering 1t, 4dps, 1 supp

I believe it is? Blizzard mentioned something about old comps returning in their article:

Each Overwatch: Classic event will feature heroes and balance from popular moments in the game’s history, ranging from the fast paced and frantic gameplay of the 2017 Moth Meta to the triple-tank, triple-support style of “Goats.”

Unless you mean it isn’t going to be in the first one or something.

Six Reins vs Six Reins in the final battle for Kings Row. I know the map should be Eichenwalde, but KR is the premier Rein map IMO, so Tracer’s going to have to settle for Reins charging into her territory.

I also agree, but a little variety never hurt anyone. I have no idea why Blizzad couldn’t just do 5v5 and 6v6 and balance for both. Microsoft is a 3 Trillion dollar company now, so I don’t want to hear stuff that’d imply they need to be stingy on dev costs.

I don’t know about earlier, but in 2019, GOATS was more of a high rank issue than a metal one. In 2019, people were starting to catch on that this “Orisa” character was actually quite good, and if you used Halt! to yoink people up into the air, it was a great setup for a Hog to hook them and cook them. But in my experience Hogs couldn’t even do that, so the Widows and Hanzos would pick up the slack instead.

She was probably overtuned, but I didn’t mind solo tanking as Orisa back then.

They’re doing multiple different classic events. This one is focused on the 1.0 patch, and then later they will do modes that include other points in the game’s history.

Oh, well. Even if I have to wait a bit to try it, I can’t wait to see how people react to it now.

Yes it will.

GOATS comp usually included Ana, but you can do a perfectly serviceable GOATS comp with Mercy, Lucio and Zenyatta.

Lucio was the only core Support member for GOATS.

GOATS was in its final days in 2019, and Role Queue was about to begin late in that year. Role Queue in OW1 only lasted about two years or a year and half. GOATS lasted longer.

Orisa was quietly buffed over the GOATS period to reach something of “closet-overpowered” state by the end of GOATS, along with Mei. Both were overlooked when Bunker became a particularly strong metagame, as well as Double-Barrier.

Triple Tank was a pretty popular metagame too, in 1.0.

Rein, Winston, D.va plus Widow, Soldier/Lucio and Mercy.

Brigitte enabled GOATS for the most part, so you won’t really be seeing it in Classic. Even in variants of GOATS, Brigitte was replaced with Moira or Ana, which will also not be in Classic.

Consider yourself lucky, it was the darkest of times in the OW1 days.
Pirate Ship Meta and Double Shield were also up there, though not quite as egregious

Yeah, if you notice, its the AOE healing/buffs that’s always the “problematic” element for supports.

She didn’t enable it, she just greatly enhanced it. From what I’ve seen, Lucio AOE + Brig AOE + Ana nade meant each support was healing an incredible amount. Like a Mercy attached to every character in the team.

For Lucio, it was Crossfade Speed.

Healing wasn’t a major component for GOATS. The Supports repeatedly used for GOATS tended to be be on the lower end. Brigitte was often substituted for Zenyatta. Moira, and Mercy typically weren’t used, and Lucio rarely healed.

Brigitte was mostly useful for stunning through barriers (save Zarya’s), and could solo Winston.

Again, every Support since the beginning had area effect healing. Rate of healing improved with Lucio’s Crossfade changes, but the biggest healers weren’t used in GOATS. Instead, you would use heroes that could bypass defenses (other Tanks), and buff them through direct or indirectly. Crossfade Speed, Nanoboost, Repairpack armor overheal, etc.

It’s also why Triple Tank was so popular with only one Support; Mercy. Because you didn’t much healing when you can just Revive or negate most damage.

I guess you guys either didn’t know or probably don’t remember than Reinhardt had a 2,000 health barrier, or Brigitte’s 500 health barrier.

90% of people under GM didn’t ever play against GOATS in OW1.

if they aren’t using the broken Brig and Lucio patch, then it won’t be a realistic recreation.

Vast majority of the playerbase never played/experienced goats despite how forums and other social media platforms making it seem like its an issue most players suffered back in ow1.
