It's time for an FOV buff

Everyone, we need to buff the hero that has been kept in the shadows for a long time and that is the FOV.

FOV is in a really bad state, it’s been that way since release.
Luckily FOV during the beta days got a buff but it wasn’t enough to
help players maintain ESPORTS levels of awareness, combat analysis, tracking and stamina.

Thanks to the players during the beta days for demanding a righteous buff we have an FOV slider, if it wasn’t for them we would be stuck playing at a fixed FOV of 50.

Now’s the time for a rework or a buff to our good friend FOV.
Once we buff FOV properly we can achieve peak levels of awareness, flexible FOV with varying resolutions and monitor sizes & sitting distances and less cluster ****s. Along with those things we can accommodate a wide variate of players who like their FOV small, in-between or “Light Speed Mode” or LSM for short.

An old edit I did to give you an idea of what a tiny buff could look like:

I’d enjoy an FOV increase and I have plenty of friends who would too.

Overwatch doesn’t even support 16:10 21:9 resolution monitors because it’s a huge advantage over 16:9 users.

And what even would you want to see changed? Do you want a full 360 fov?

Then everyone will be able to experience the tru feeling of goats.

Personally I think the FOV they have at 103 is perfectly fine.

They need to make multiple changes to this game if they want it to be on par with other competitive games.

Let us hide gun models
Let us hide UI elements
Let us increase FOV even more
Let us disable all non-essential voice lines (random chatter, user-triggered voice lines)
Let us disable skins

Just to start

My ideal FOV is 120.

THey need to change audio settings.
I want to increase enemy footstep noise. my footsteps sound to me like cannon fire, but the McCree behind me walking, doesnt make noise sometimes. I want to turn up enemy noise, and turn down team sound effects. I can’t hear footsteps when our bastion is constantly firing.
Sounds take priority, and My soldier is voice line spamming, that sound takes sound priority over the reaper shadowstepping next to me(I have my headset on max volume, I can usually hear a shadowstep across the map).

You think?
The actual FOV you’re getting is something like 70 or sub 80ish.

Your vertical FOV is capped at 60 or 80ish and your horizontal FOV is adjustabel to 103.

If you play on 21:9 you get less vertical FOV than a 16:9 user and if
you play on 16:9 in 21:9 you get the same result.

“OH BUT 21:9 PEOPLE GET AN ADVANTAGE”
Wrong, this would be true in old Source games where the FOV is done differently and tbh the best way imo.

In Source games your vertical FOV is adjustable and the horizontal FOV is automatically adjusted depending on the width of your screen, so if you wanted to blow your economical loads you can achieve a bonkers wide FOV, but would you be able to do this in E-sports matches? Nope, everyone runs the same monitors so bye bye megaultrasuperultra wide setup.

“OH BUT THE WIDE SETUP IS STILL NOT FAIR”
I’ve played on a triple monitor setup and the advantage you gain is
tiny unless you’re willing to look left and right with your head and eyes.

I’ve out played my friend several times even though he was using 3 monitors. How? Because you’re more focused on the center of the screen and the rest is left in a “sensory area”. If your setup is stupid wide then the leftover edges are out of bounds, rendering them useless.

In OW the low FOV quickly diminishes your stamina, turns CQB scenarios into a modern art masterpiece and gives mobile characters up close an unfair advantage because you can’t keep track of them because by the time you move to where they went they’re already out of your sights, above your head or right behind you or right next to you.

Combine that with the giant viewmodels and you’ve got yourself the TF2 “Soldier skill enhancement device”.

There’s a reason why I use some skins over the ones I like, because the weapon models are smaller, allowing met to see more.

I can go on and on with this but you get the idea.

Reducing gun-models by a bit would be kinda neat, I guess.
Otherwise, I dont know. I feel comfortable at the current FOV.

Remember that sometimes FOV isnt meant to be too high, but still cranked to the max, because it gives the player a necessary advantage to stay competitive.

Yes, I do.

Saying “The actual FOV you’re getting” is a nonsensical statement because you’re just talking about horizontal vs vertical FOV. Both are two ways to talk about the same thing, and is simply game engine dependent on what they decide to make as the dependent variable in the calculation. If they support stretching based on aspect ratio it just means the horizontal FoV slider would go higher for different aspect ratios.

Sounds like a personal problem. I never really have trouble with this.

…but, what is yours? Seriously.

Per Wikipedia, this is the normal FOV for any human:

Is it possible to simulate this? I’m not sure. Even monitors have their limits.

Not only that, it’s done to allow players to have a comfortable view of the game with their monitor and sitting distance.

I’ve managed to force OW’s resolution to be 1:1 with YT’s theater mode because
I can keep track of what is going on around me than in full screen, but the image quality was iffy thus forcing me to use the normal resolution but since I’ve stopped playing this game a lot, the resolution method is gone.

Having a console FOV for desktop users is like trying to put on small shoes while you’re big foot.

you don’t even see with 120 in rl.

tbh i’d want a viewmodel fov change more than anything. the fact that up to 30% of the screen is taken up by doomfist’s gauntlet is redonkulous.

IIRC they actually have a unique sound system which is supposed to make sounds of the most important threats louder while less important things are quieter.

Unfortunately, I think this system isn’t working near as well as it used to thanks to all the new abilities and voice lines in the game. I have the same troubles that you do.

So what, you can still see it on a monitor and you will have wider view.

Care to be more specific so I can have a better understanding of your argument?

You can also see this on a monitor but that doesn’t mean it is natural.

The person before me explained it better.

That’s not a good argument.

What MonkaS is saying is that his ideal INGAME FOV is 120, meaning the FOV setting he runs/ uses ingame is 120 because it suits him, it feels comfortable and natural for him.

I don’t know his monitor’s resolution and size but if he runs something like a 23 inch 1080p monitor while sitting up close like most desktop users I can see why.
