It's simple. Fix the matchmaker. Do not lie that it works

Because in 80% of all cases, it produces stomps and unwinnable matches. It is a black mark on this game and a black mark on the devs. You have had years, almost a decade to make a decent matchmaker, and it has been a great failure.

Na that’s not remotely true.

90% of games are fine.

Keep in mind your are supposed to be doing the whole counter pick thing if you feel like your getting wrecked.

And if your not already shoot something other the enemy tank at the start of fights, to force out those big support ults early. And or just get key picks right off the back.

Even as support and tank, you goal is to get the enemy off the point. Not stall forever till someone else does that part for ya.

have great day!

100% agree the matches are crap.

It is only “face kicking” matches at this point.

going 16 in 20 is no excuse for this company anymore. IDK probably should start writing Microsoft directly to initiate pink slips to anyone working with the match making of Overwatch. Because the only real gameplay sabotage here is the individuals working on Match making and they are just proving that they are personally sabotaging Microsoft’s investment.

Woah. I bet they never thought of fixing the matchmaker! That is simple.

Your talents are wasted on a video game forum. Have you tried solving other problems with simplistic demands?!?!

Man I miss git gud. It’s so much easier to say git gud then it is to sit here and explain human error in gaming.

This forum is always amazes me. People in here still defending that bouncing everyday between Diamond 5 and Silver 2 in one role and in one account is completely normal. KEKW. I am not playing anymore this garbage but this forum always brings me joy so i am still reading. Btw don’t even bother to talk in here with disneyland bots. This game has nothing but casualty. Play casual or leave. 8 years of Overwatch experience is talking

Lots of people like to say it’s easy just fix the matchmaker and everything will be good.

But how about all the variables that lead to bad games that the matchmaker cannot account for? People being distracted, tilted, playing a hero they don’t play often instead of their stronger heroes. Playing on a map that is bad for the hero they are on, being countered by the enemy and not swapping. Making a bad team comp while the enemy makes a better one. Having Smurfs, having throwers, having leavers.

What can the matchmaker do about any of that? We all want better games, but how can it realistically be accomplished? No one ever seems to have an actual solution.

Yeah it probably is hard to fix the matchmaker. However I do not think after 10 years it should be still be that bad. And all the things you say should be outliers, but this seems to be the rule. You get massive amount of matches that are stomps. So one half plays like a god and the other half plays like they are distracted, tilted whatever? Match after match? Does not add up.
It feels like the matchmaker is average results, not actually forcing a balance.

Most of the things I said are not outliers. Tons of people pick heroes they are worse at, lots of people don’t swap when countered. Especially outside of high ranks, people play what they want, they don’t always try and make good comps. We know the game has a ton of Smurfs, throwers and leavers. Is it possible they can improve the matchmaker a bit? I assume so. But it will not solve many of the reasons why games become stomps/unwinnable/unfun etc.

And many of these problems are more common in qp, as people generally don’t care as much. Tho I am unsure if qp or comp is your issue, or both.

The problem is that most people don’t even know why the matchmaker is broken in OW. Many assume it’s rigged or blame EOMM, which gets them labeled as conspiracy theorists—so their complaints are mocked and dismissed.

But I can’t blame them, because the real reasons behind the broken MM are deliberately hidden.

I’ve talked about this issue before, so I won’t go into all the details again. But simply put, it’s caused by stacks and wide groups. Almost every QP match is wide. And I mean really wide. Comp isn’t much better. To add insult to injury, many players know how to use stacks to manipulate the MM.

My hopes for a fix are slim to none. Blizzard is actually doubling down on what’s breaking the MM. Aaron explicitly said in his last blog post that they’re happy grouping is easier than ever. They’ve given up on match quality and competitive integrity. The only thing that matters to them now is fast queues.

Low-quality matches make people quit, which increases queue times. And their solution? Even wider matches. It’s a downward spiral, and there’s no coming back from this path.

MM is not the problem… people not picking the right heroes against the enemy is the main reason they loose and not the skill level of the people in the match.

Didn’t you hear….its an EASY fix…why people never complain about matchmakers everywhere else

The matchmaker is decent – OW1 is better because it made players wait for a really tight matchups. Based on what devs stated in a Spilo interview, OW2 allows for wider skill disparities between teams to make player queues super short – I figured that’s the reason stomps between teams are more frequent.

I do think the terrible matchmaking is a serious problem, but I also doubt that fixing it is easy. If it were easy, they probably would have done it by now.

I strongly suspect the matchmaking is terrible because of certain choices that were made: free-to-play game that makes it very easy for cheaters and smurfs to get new accounts as well as a rather lackluster cheating enforcement system.

There also seems to be the sensibility that the most important thing is getting players into matches fast, and as long as that happens, it’s all good, even if that means it’s 4 new players and an experienced support against a grouped 5-stack sporting comp streak tags.

These factors may not be the whole story, but I do think they contribute a lot to why matchmaking is as bad as it is.

And the list goes on and on, people that are eating while playing, people that are intoxicated, people playing on slow stuttery systems or with poor internet stability.

People need to get out of the OW bubble and they will quickly realize most games struggle to matchmake. Playing rocket league for the first time in years with a friend and the games are so stompy in either direction and unpredictable it’s wild.

And at face value, rocket league should be a muuuuch easier game to matchmake compared to something as nuanced as OW.

The solution is accepting reality.

The reason bad matches occur is because of forced role queue, 5v5, and refusing to address hero kit issues more specifically in the support role which causes 95% of the games issues at all. No one around here is genuine when we discuss these issues either though, I can say the support role is busted and ridiculous because it is, but people here will fire back with “muh hitscan bug me and and I hate dying” even though its a PVP game. But there are several discussions to have regarding stupid things like rez, anti, and invulns and how they ruin the game completely and that the people who claim these things are fine are simply just hypocrites through and through.

The other thing to accept is that this game simply has far less players in general. The matchmaker probably can’t find 10 gold baddie players to match against anymore within comp or QP. But shills around here and Blizzard seem unable to accept that OW has fallen so far that it’s basically a niche game with a smaller following than ever. How can anyone expect the matchmaker to work if only 100k people or less are playing, all with extremely different skill ranges.

I know how to fix this, but it would certainly be expensive.

It is also a very snowballey game in general. One mistake from one person in positioning can lead to losing that team fight. Last weekend I saw part of a owcs series. It was tied at 2-2 but the last game was 22 kills to 1 kill and the map was over. In a series without matchmaking at all, and they were tied. It’s not like the one team just win 3-0 and stomped each game. But that one match they certainly did. After losing 2 previous ones.

5 stack vs solo players is 100% easy stomp match allowed by matchmaker and blizzard.

I provide some pseudocode:
if (player.bad) player.rank = Ranks.WOOD_5
hope that helps

I’m not sure if I can justify my rank oscillation just with my “mental” or whatever. It feels like I’m forced down to a certain point only to easily climb up again.
