It is a terrible idea to delete the loot boxes system

This has no positive feedback for new players. As a free to play game, the number of players who don’t spend a penny is the largest. Battle passes will not do much to increase new players’ retention. When the novice benefits are enough with a good quality, the novice will have a higher engagement to the game. So maybe OW2 and OW1 will end up in the same place, losing potentially a large number of players. The only way is bring loot boxes back or allow players to earn legacy credits in game.

It just feels you are being rewarded with nothing while playing. At least with the old loot box system you could force out a legendary item here and there. I played the game with my friends for about 2-3 hours and got one level done on the battle pass. While in the old game that would be a good 3-4 loot boxes. Plus I was a Lvl 5 endorsement which also gave rewards. This terrible monetization is going to cause so many players to give up. Especially with heroes being tied to it.

I’m usually not a big fan of loot boxes but Overwatch’s loot box system was probably the best and least predatory example of them. All cosmetics, no pay to win, and dupe protection in the form of credits.

I really do hope that all the people who complained about loot boxes are really happy with the absolutely abysmal replacement system we have now in Overwatch 2.

Yes, indeed. It is stupid to do so, the game will lose huge number of new players.

Getting rid of loot boxes is a good thing, they are horrible gambling…
they replaced it with something that is not as morally bankrupt, with the unfortunate side effect of being greedy AF that currently would req an 8mo grind to unlock one legendary skin.

Overall the system is better in concept, worse in execution.

Apex legends have both battle pass and loot boxes, it feels good ans not pay 2 win at all. Ow2 should at least give new players the chance to earn some of the skins easily. Or the game will die soon I am afraid.

They’re really not.

Gambling involves a risk of loss.

There’s no “losing” with Overwatch 1’s loot boxes because, as I pointed out above, they contain all cosmetic items, nothing pay to win, and dupe protection in the form of credits.

Plus, you didn’t need to spend money on them to get them. You could earn them just by playing the game.

Now, with this new system in Overwatch 2, to get certain cosmetics you must spend money. The only cosmetics you can earn are the handful of free tier items on the Battle Pass.

Yeah, loot boxes are some sorts of gambling. But they should at least give those newbies more positive rewards after they played Overwatch 2. By all means like earn legacy credits to purchase some of the permanent skins. Only enough rewards will keep those who play Overwatch for the first time to stay.

The loot box $y$tem wa$ antiquated and doe$n’t provided enough of an engaging and rewarding $y$tem a$ compared to the battle pa$$ $y$tem. With the new $y$tem, player$ have fun and meaningful objective$ to complete, offering an exciting new method of progre$$ion and lot$ of fun unlockable$, $uch a$ donut weapon charm$!

I think you $hould open up your mind (and wallet) to thi$ new $y$tem!

Weapon charms that are stabbed into the hands of some characters like Sigma & Genji.

Absolutely ridiculous.

Lootboxes are getting more and more legal backlash, so the loot box system is just going out because companies do not want to deal with it.

Ridiculously profitable :face_vomiting:

Blizzard is greedy and horrible.

Tell that to someone with a gambling addiction, they might not ‘need’ to but they will… and are effectively ‘losing’ every time they pull the lever and do not obtain an item they wanted

Your suggesting Cosmetic items have no value just because they are not pay to win why than why is blizzard currently charging $20 for skin

Lootboxes are cancer and deserve to be removed. The problem is the rate of reward dropping, but this was caused by the switch to free to play and has nothing to do with the lootboxes. If they kept the lootboxes, they would have still greatly nerfed the amount of looboxes you can earn while playing.

Old skins are not worth the money they are charging. I prefer the leveling loot box system and the weekly reward boxes myself over this current system.

I never thought the OW1 lootbox system was bad, unlike some reporters like YongYea or Jim Sterling. The really bad lootbox system is and always was in the Valve games, with resealable items. OW1 was very generous with its lootboxes, so much so that I’ve only bought 5 lootboxes with real money within OW1s life span.

Now, every skin is behind a paywall, and the weekly challenges drop very small amounts of coin. Overwatch went from very generous to very stingy very fast.

There absolutely was a risk of loss in OW1’s loot boxes. The loss was the money you spent on them while not getting anything you wanted. That’s what makes it gambling.

With the old system I was literally getting rewarded with nothing because I had every item in the loot boxes. With the BP, at least I get something I don’t already have at every level.

You did not lose the money you spent on them because you didn’t get anything you wanted. And just because you didn’t get anything you wanted does not make it even close to gambling.

You still got items or credits. You still got something for your money.

Plus, as mentioned before, you didn’t have to spend money on them. You could get them for free just by playing. You can’t gamble on slots or poker or sports betting for free.

With actual gambling you can actually (and more often than not do) get nothing back for the money you spend.
