Issues with private profiles in competitive play! (And possible solution)

A lot of times in competitive I find myself taking a role away from someone else who prefers playing what I choose. (Ex. I instalock Reinhardt, but a private profile Reinhardt main wanted Reinhardt). Most players who have their main taken will never speak up until near the end of the match complaining that their hero was taken. This situation never happened with public profiles as I was able to check who played what in comp, and gave them the hero they mostly played, but now it happens a lot more often than you’d think. If removing private profiles isn’t an opinion, I suggest all profiles to be public on ladder competitive. If this cannot be done, an alternate solution would be for players to choose which characters they prefer to play, which displays when hovering over them in social (similar to how it was with public profiles, but instead of displaying hours, it simply displays the hero they prefer to play).

Or you could… ask people what they want to play?

“I can switch to a different hero if someone wants Rein”

See, was that so hard?

I like the idea of people picking heroes they like playing to be shown for display.
I still have the cursed ‘everyone is a support main’ matches, so this would , if anything , be a nice way to see beforehand lmao.

To OP:

No

that is all

I’d prefer people not know who I “prefer to play”. It creates a situation where im told who i should play as opposed to who i want to play. I play a lot of supports usually, but sometimes i want to tank or DPS. That was the issue with everyone having public profiles (didn’t help that i use to be a Mercy main and was constantly flamed by my team)

I think it’d be a nice feature to have an option to display preferred heroes when queuing up. All the people who complain about “muh toxicity” can keep their profiles private, and people who (for some reason) refuse to properly communicate with their teammates can convey who they’re proficient with.

Or, the person who really wants to play Rein can advocate for themselves, and ASK if they can play Rein, instead of expecting 5 other teammates to read their mind over the internet and coddle them by offering up their main every time they queue. Or better yet, stop one-tricking and learn more than one hero.

They kind of have this already. It’s called LFG, and when you queue up you can select a role, and even chat with your team ahead of time to determine what everyone wants to play. That way, if all the heroes you play are all going to be instalocked by someone else, you can leave the group and find another before the match starts.

Honestly haven’t used that feature yet so that’s nice to hear.

You realize, you already have a solution at your fingertips - right?

LFG.

Create a group, set the roles - pick the one you prefer and as people join they can select the roles they prefer.

Viola! Problem solved and no consideration for public/private profiles required.

But, if you are one of those people who has to inspect all your team mates profiles to determine if YOU think they are playing what YOU think they should be playing - then YOU and players like you are the reason why profiles are now private by default.

I said this to myself before I scrolled down.

If I see a private profile Mcree or Widow. I just pick DPS anyway.

They are obviously not confident in their stats or they are a booster smurf who will carry us to victory (or they might be a thrower, pretty much all these options lead me towards playing a 3rd DPS).
