Is Winston's shield deceptively broken?

The feel I have in my games playing against Winston is that his 700 shield is stronger than Orisa’s experimental 700 shield.

Weird right?

Winston shield is 700.
Orisa’s experimental shield is 700.
Yet, Winstons shield seems too be more resilient and appears more often than Orisa’s shield.

It is a strange feel I get game after game when I see Winston’s shield behavior.

Am I that unlucky to be against teams that focus Orisa’s shield?
They SHATTER it nearly after deployment while our team doesn’t shoot at Winston’s bubble shield at all?

Winston’s shield persists. (700 hp)
Orisa’s does not. (700 hp)
Why???

Is Winston’s ROUND shield quartered?
What I mean is…700,700,700,700 on each quarter of the semi sphere?

It really, really feels like Winston’s 700 shield has some sort of advantage.
Does anyone feel the same when playing against Winston’s shield?
Can someone please check it?

I think it’s just because they’re placed in different positions. Orisa’s barrier is always gonna be in front of her and/or her team, Winston uses his barrier when jumping on isolated targets so he can dance around it and block cooldowns/healing from outside

Orisa’s is naturally gonna be attacked more

When Orisa fires at the Winston’s shield it feels like she just can’t do enough against it by herself.

It’s like a cruel joke. A shield tank that cannot do enough damage to shatter a shield herself.
She always needs help to shatter a shield while other heroes do not.

It’s like they turned it around on Orisa to see how she feels when you can’t break a shield yourself.

Remember when Orisa’s shield was at 900?
I think all the DPS heroes had a hard time with it solo.
At 700 they smash through it like paper while Orisa struggles firing against a 700 shield.

It really feels like “see how you like it” balancing.

In lower elos people refuse to shoot bubble for some reason

Also dont forgrt that the damage will divide between Winstons 500HP body and his 700HP shield, while you have to shoot Orisas shield before you can even touch Orisa

thats a weird conclusion to make considering out of all the tanks with shields she’s the one with the highest dps and its not like she cant fire for a long time either

its honestly just gameplay feel and also just how players react to the shields in general, a winston shield will rarely be the focus because its in a place usually to isolate someone and thats about it and wont be imperative to really destroy, a rein or orisa shield on the other hand is usually used for directly protecting a team and to start damaging those enemies you have to destroy the shield so it gets focused down a lot more

isnt it 900 health? i feel like they buffed it semi recently

it definitely feels way stronger tho like i’ve been thinking it was the second highest barrier health behind rein’s for a while now. Like i often dont see it break it usually times out while orisa’s can last like 3 seconds maybe

Thats all shield tanks other than Orisa tho. Rein and Winston can’t even damage a shield. Orisa was always the one shield tank that could break shields. Sigma changed the paradigm a little bit, but even his shield breaking pales in comparison. Orisa does 132dps no fall off no range limit while Sigma needs to be relatively close to hit a shield and will only do 70dps to it or about half of Orisa’s. Orisa is the shield breaking main tank there’s no comparison.

Winston’s shield is gonna last longer because if the Wisnston is playing smart he’s gonna go for a pick or to harass in a place where only 1-2 people can immediately deal with him and where half the team is needing to turn around (or look up better yet). Orisas shields by contrast are usually walls placed in the most active chokes and angles in the map. The whole enemy team is looking in the places Orisa places shield by default.

no, its never been 900 health, Orisa’s was, Winston’s has only been 600 and 700 health

they can its just significantly less worth it and they deal less dps, their attacks deal damage to everything in range including shield

Hammer hurts shield? I know fire strike does but I never thought hammer did. Thats weird.

Also Orisa had 900 shield for a long time. For a decent chunk of her release she had 900 shield with 8 second cooldown which of course started when you shot it but replaced the old barrier when it landed). Was pretty bad. Sigma was released with 1500hp fast deploying barrier and had it for a few months with Orisa’s 900. Even with the entire team focusing both shields you’d only have small windows every ten or fifteen seconds where you could shoot something other than a shield. Meta changed to like Mei Reaper in league play. For most of ladder the game just became shooting shield. Truly a miserable time.

Now both of them (Orisa especially) have silly weak shields imo. The synergy of these two main tanks meant both had to have their shields cut down. I still think a 1 shield tank max implementation woulda been better than having to rework all shield balance to awkwardly accommodate two heroes synergy lol

Yep and tesla cannon

Definitely a miserable time I hated it

I agree, honestly I’d prefer the straight removal of sigma’s shield from his kit (probably giving it to a different tank where it wouldn’t be as big a problem) and push him more toward the off tank role with whatever ability replaces it plus some other kit changes

that’s another route but I would prefer not doing that if possible

Not just that, but one winston shield causes way more disruption to a group. Heals cut off, sight lines blocked etc.

Winston’s shield eats less damage because it’s normally not in front of everyone, and also people right next to it are generally bubble dancing with Winston trying to shoot him not the shield.

Some need Winston bubble break training.

Look what I found…does this mean gay?

:tipping_hand_man:

Cooldown probably. What is the cooldown of bubble?

Are you serious? Orisa does 132 dps. Orisa is literally the best shield hero for shooting barriers. Orisa is probably the second best barrier busting hero in the entire game.

Winston, Rein and Sigma are dog poo poo against barriers.

Your a numbers player I see, but not a practical player. When you play Orisa and try to break shields you will know what I mean.

If you watch a Winston try to bust barriers you’ll see why I’m a numbers guy. He’s garbage at it.

Yeah but the whole point of winston is that he can ignore barriers??

You’re right about that. I was just trying to make the point that Orisa is the only shield tank who is good against barriers. OP is trying to make it seem like everyone in the game is good against barriers and Orisa is somehow helpless against them.

Winstons shield is tied to his movement, it’s deployed every time he jumps somewhere not in front of the enemy team. Orisa’s is stationary and dropped where people are already shooting at. Winston likely will only have one person shooting at it, Orisa’s has to hold up against focus fire.
